There was a specific scent that always marked the arrival of trouble in Revan’s life.

It wasn’t the smell of sand dust, nor the sweat of horses after a heavy training session, and certainly not the wild lavender aroma that had refused to leave his fingertips since yesterday.

It was the scent of French tuberose perfume too sweet, too potent, and expensive enough to pay the salaries of ten grooms for a year.Full novel: THE BILLIONAIRE’S FORBIDDEN JUMP — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Revan was helping Alesya fit a leather cavesson on Phantom in the main barn aisle when the sound of high heels struck the rubber-matted concrete floor.

Clack.

Clack.

Clack.

A rhythmic, regular stride.

Arrogant.

Flawless.

Phantom was the first to react.

The black stallion jerked his head up sharply, snorted loudly, and took a half-step back until his hindquarters bumped against Revan’s chest.

“Easy, boy,” Revan whispered low, his palm pressing against the horse’s hip to steady him.

But Revan’s eyes were already fixed on the end of the aisle.

There, standing between the shadows of mahogany wood and the bright Florida morning sun, was Victoria Ashworth.

She looked as if she had just stepped off the cover of Town & Country magazine.

An immaculate ivory silk blazer suit hugged her slender frame, gold-rimmed sunglasses perched atop perfectly waved platinum blonde hair, and a crocodile-skin Hermès bag hung elegantly from the crook of her elbow.

Two worlds collided in that barn aisle.

Sterile aristocratic luxury faced directly against a rough world of sweat, dirt, and muscle.

Alesya didn’t turn around.

She kept holding Phantom’s lead rope, her bare hand stroking the stallion’s cheekbone with practiced calm.

Only Revan noticed how her slender shoulders instantly stiffened.

“Revan, darling.”

Victoria’s voice flowed, sweet on the surface but hiding sharp edges like polished crystal.

She removed her sunglasses, revealing a pair of cold, pale blue eyes that constantly calculated the monetary value of everything they saw.

“I told you not to come without notice,” Revan said coldly, his hand remaining on Phantom’s lead.

Victoria stepped closer, completely ignoring the smell of hay and Phantom’s anxious snorts.

She stopped right beside Revan, close enough for her expensive perfume to drown out the air around them.

Then, her gaze shifted to Alesya.

Victoria’s eyes moved slowly.

Assessing.

Dissecting.

From Alesya’s messy brown ponytail and the slightly worn maroon flannel shirt at the elbows, down to the jeans stained with mud at the knees.

A thin, practiced smile cracked Victoria’s red lips.

“Ah,” Victoria hissed softly, her voice heavy with quiet superiority.

“So this is… the new veterinarian from the countryside everyone has been talking about?”

Alesya slowly tied the final knot on Phantom’s cavesson, then turned to face Victoria.

She didn’t bow her head.

She didn’t tidy her dirty clothes.

She stood tall, chin lifted, her honey-brown eyes staring straight into Victoria’s blue pupils without flinching.

“Dr.

Alesya Vargas,” Alesya said calmly.

Her voice was flat, emotionless, yet carried a weight that couldn’t be underestimated.

Victoria gave a small laugh a sound like ice clinking in a crystal glass.

“Of course.

Vargas.” Victoria pronounced the name with a deliberately awkward accent.

“Camila Santos was very persistent in recommending you to the board.

It’s quite touching to see how local vets help each other secure jobs in the big city.”

The insult was wrapped neatly in a socialite’s polite tone.

Revan felt his jaw tighten.

A wild urge rose in his chest to cut Victoria off and order her out of his barn this instant.

But before he could open his mouth, Alesya had already taken a single inch forward.

“Medical expertise isn’t determined by zip codes, Miss Ashworth,” Alesya replied sharply.

The smile on her face was just as cold as Victoria’s.

“And as far as I know, a five-hundred-kilogram horse doesn’t care about the price of your silk blazer when he’s in pain.

He only cares about who knows how to heal him.”

The air in the barn aisle froze instantly.

Marcus, sweeping hay at the end of the aisle, stopped mid-motion.

Javi held his breath in the adjacent stall.

No one ever spoke to Gerald Ashworth’s only daughter like that.

Not in Wellington.

Not in this billion-dollar equestrian world.

Victoria’s blue eyes narrowed dangerously.

A flash of pure anger passed behind her elegant mask before she smiled cunningly again.

“Interesting,” Victoria whispered, her voice dropping an octave.

“Revan always has a weakness for wild things he thinks he can tame.”

Victoria stepped closer to Revan.

Without warning, she raised her perfectly manicured hand, her fingers adorned with a large solitaire diamond ring, and landed it on Revan’s chest.

Victoria’s fingers adjusted Revan’s collar with deliberate intimacy.

A territorial marking.

“My father wants us to have dinner at The Club tonight, Revan,” Victoria said, softening her voice just enough for Alesya, standing only a meter away, to hear.

“The designer from Milan has already sent sketches for the wedding dress fitting next month.

And the WEF committee wants to ensure our official engagement announcement makes the front page of the opening program booklet.”

The touch of Victoria’s hand on his chest felt cold.

A hundred and eighty degrees different from the warm palm of Alesya, which had pressed against his heart yesterday and burned through every nerve.

Revan felt a violent physical rejection within his own body.

His skin prickled not from desire, but from a disgusting sense of confinement.

He wanted to swat Victoria’s hand away.

But he knew the consequences: one wrong move in public, and Gerald Ashworth would pull fifty million dollars from his company accounts before sunset.

And worse… the ownership documents for Phantom, still held in the family trust court, would be seized.

“We’ll discuss that schedule later, Victoria,” Revan said hoarsely, his hand gripping Phantom’s lead tightening unconsciously.

“There’s nothing left to discuss, darling.

Everything is arranged,” Victoria whispered petulantly.

Victoria stepped toward Phantom, intending to touch the horse’s neck to assert her dominance in front of Alesya.

“And this horse…” Victoria raised her hand toward Phantom’s nose.

“…my father says he must be ready within a month, or we will bring in a specialist from the German national team to replace….”

Phantom reacted wildly.

The stallion suddenly slammed his front hoof onto the concrete floor with a loud thud.

His head snapped up, teeth snapping in the air, and he let out a threatening neigh that made Victoria shriek in shock and jump back two steps.

“Whoa!

Phantom, basta!” Revan yanked the lead with his left hand, trying to control the horse.

But a sharp pain suddenly pierced Revan’s left shoulder.

His muscle knots locked up.

Revan hissed in pain, his grip weakening, and the giant black horse nearly broke free in the narrow aisle.

“Revan, let me.”

Alesya’s voice cut through the panic.

The woman moved like lightning.

Alesya slipped between Revan’s body and Phantom.

Her body pressed tightly against Revan’s left side, blocking him from using his injured shoulder.

The scent of lavender and the woman’s body heat instantly enveloped Revan’s senses again.

Alesya’s small but muscular hands took over the lead from Revan’s trembling grip.

Their fingers intertwined tightly over the leather strap for two full seconds.

Intense physical contact.

Revan could feel Alesya’s chest rising and falling rapidly against his arm, feeling the heat of her skin penetrate his shirt fabric.

“Shh…

Mírame, mi rey,” Alesya whispered to Phantom, her voice low and hypnotic.

She pressed her forehead to Phantom’s muzzle, disregarding the danger if the horse suddenly panicked.

The miracle happened again.

Like a switch being flipped, Phantom’s rage subsided in seconds.

The stallion lowered his head, sniffed Alesya’s neck, and exhaled a long, warm breath onto the woman’s shoulder.

Silence returned to the barn.

Victoria stood frozen near the door, breathing heavily from shock, her beautiful face pale from the humiliation she had just suffered.

The horse had openly rejected her touch in front of her fiancé and the ranch staff.

“That horse is insane,” Victoria hissed sharply, her voice trembling with anger exploding behind her mask.

“He’s dangerous, Revan!

My father was right, you should sell him to a slaughterhouse or make him a stud instead of embarrassing our family at the WEF!”

“Watch your mouth, Victoria,” Revan’s voice cut through the air like a scalpel.

Cold.

Deadly.

Revan’s gray eyes stared at his fiancée with a darkness that silenced Victoria instantly.

“Phantom isn’t going anywhere.

And you… you’d better get back to your car now before I forget who your father is.”

Victoria looked at Revan in disbelief.

Then her eyes shifted to Alesya, who was still standing very close to Revan so close their shoulders touched, so close they looked like an inseparable unit beside the black horse.

Something very dangerous flashed in Victoria’s blue eyes.

The socialite’s suspicion had turned into full conviction: this woman was not just a veterinarian.

She was a threat.

Victoria took a deep breath, straightened her back, and forced her elegant smile back onto her face.

“Of course, darling,” Victoria said calmly, as if nothing had happened.

“I’ll wait for you at The Club at eight tonight.”

Victoria stepped closer to Revan once more.

This time, she didn’t touch his chest.

Victoria grabbed Revan’s jaw with both her cold hands, pulled the man’s face down, and planted a long kiss right on Revan’s cheek, just millimeters from the corner of his lips.

A possessive kiss displayed right in front of Alesya’s eyes.

“Don’t be late, my future husband,” Victoria whispered with a triumphant smirk.

Then, without looking at Alesya again, Victoria turned and walked away with the arrogant click of her high heels, leaving the suffocating scent of tuberose perfume in the air.

Revan didn’t move for several seconds.

The trace of Victoria’s kiss on his cheek felt like a disgusting acid burn.

Slowly, Revan turned his face toward Alesya.

Alesya was still standing beside him, holding Phantom’s lead.

The Colombian woman’s face looked like perfectly carved marble.

Cold.

Professional.

No tears.

No visible anger.

As if she hadn’t been affected in the slightest by the million-dollar socialite drama that had just unfolded before her.

But Revan’s eyes dropped downward.

To Alesya’s left hand holding Phantom’s thick leather lead.

The woman’s fingers gripped the leather strap so tightly, so firmly, that her knuckles turned bloodless white.

And the veins in her delicate wrist pulsed rapidly, betraying the storm of emotions she was locking tightly inside her chest.

Revan stared at that grip.

And that morning, amidst the chaos of family politics and the threat of career destruction…

Revan’s heart pounded wildly with a dark and dangerous sense of victory.

This woman cared.

Her mask was cold, but her blood boiled for him.

“Alesya,” Revan whispered hoarsely, stepping forward until his body nearly caged the woman against the stall wall.

Alesya didn’t look up.

She pulled Phantom’s lead with a firm jerk, then stepped back, away from Revan.

“Today’s training session is over, Mr.

Caldwell,” Alesya said in a voice so controlled it sounded like cracking ice.

“You’d better go clean the lipstick off your face before your horse realizes how ch

eap your dignity looked in front of that woman.”

Alesya led Phantom into the stall, slamming the iron door shut with a bang that shook the entire barn aisle.

Leaving Revan standing alone in the silence.

Touching his burning cheek.

And realizing that the real war had just begun.
