I was three minutes away from marrying the man I loved when I heard my sister say his name behind a locked door.

“Daniel…”

Sophia’s voice was soft.Full novel: The Billionaire’s Unexpected Wife — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Too soft.

I stopped outside the private lounge, one hand still resting on the silver handle.

For a moment, I thought I had heard wrong.

The wedding hall behind me was filled with music, laughter, and the quiet hum of hundreds of guests.

My guests.

My family.

My wedding.

And behind this door was my younger sister.

With my fiancé.

I swallowed.

“Daniel?”

No answer.

Then I heard him laugh.

A low, familiar laugh.

The same laugh that had made me fall in love with him three years ago.

My fingers tightened around the handle.

I should have walked away.

I should have given him the benefit of the doubt.

Instead, I opened the door.

And my entire world ended.

Sophia was standing against the wall.

Her veil was gone, her hair slightly messy, and one of Daniel’s hands was around her waist.

His lips were on hers.

For several seconds, none of us moved.

Daniel pulled away first.

His face turned white.

“Elena.”

My sister stared at me.

Then she stepped away from him.

“Elena, I can explain.”

I looked at her.

Then at Daniel.

Then back at her.

I didn’t feel anything.

That was the strangest part.

No screaming.

No tears.

No shaking.

Just a strange emptiness spreading through my chest.

I looked down at my wedding dress.

White silk.

Hand-sewn pearls.

A long train that had taken three months to design.

I had chosen every detail myself.

I had imagined walking down the aisle in this dress while Daniel waited for me at the end.

I had imagined his smile.

His vows.

His hands holding mine.

I had imagined our future.

Apparently, I had imagined it alone.

“Move,” I said quietly.

Sophia blinked.

“What?”

“Move.”

She stepped aside.

I walked into the room.

Daniel immediately came after me.

“Elena, wait.”

I stopped.

He grabbed my wrist.

I looked down at his hand.

He released me.

“It’s not what you think.”

I almost laughed.

It was such a stupid sentence.

People only said it’s not what you think when it was exactly what you thought.

“You were kissing my sister.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“I know how it looks.”

“How it looks?”

I finally looked him directly in the eyes.

“How does it look, Daniel?”

He said nothing.

Sophia wiped her eyes.

“It’s complicated.”

I turned toward her.

“No. It isn’t.”

Her lips parted.

“You’re my sister.”

She lowered her gaze.

“And he’s my fiancé.”

Silence.

I could hear the wedding music through the closed door.

A beautiful piano melody.

The song I had chosen for my entrance.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Elena, please. I made a mistake.”

“A mistake?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

He froze.

I stared at him.

“How long have you been sleeping with my sister?”

Sophia suddenly looked at Daniel.

That was enough.

I didn’t need an answer.

My stomach twisted.

I had suspected Daniel had been distant lately.

Late nights.

Unexplained meetings.

Cancelled dinners.

Messages he wouldn’t let me see.

I had blamed work.

I had blamed myself.

I had even wondered if I wasn’t exciting enough anymore.

And all this time…

It had been her.

My own sister.

I took a slow breath.

“Does Father know?”

Neither of them answered.

That was answer enough.

I turned toward the door.

“Elena!”

Daniel followed me.

“You can’t just walk out.”

I stopped.

Slowly, I looked back.

“Watch me.”

He caught my arm again.

“We’re getting married in three minutes.”

“No.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“I said no.”

“Elena, don’t do this.”

I pulled my arm free.

“You already did.”

I walked out.

The music was still playing.

Guests were waiting.

People smiled when they saw me.

They thought I was nervous.

They thought I was a bride walking toward the most important moment of her life.

Nobody knew I had just discovered that the man waiting at the altar had been sleeping with my sister.

My mother stood near the front row.

She smiled at me.

Then she noticed my face.

Her smile disappeared.

“Elena?”

I walked toward her.

“Mom.”

“What happened?”

I shook my head.

“Where’s Daniel?”

Behind me, Daniel entered the hall.

His expression was desperate.

Sophia was nowhere to be seen.

Whispers began spreading through the guests.

My mother looked from me to Daniel.

Then back to me.

“What happened?”

I couldn’t say it.

Not yet.

If I said it out loud, it would become real.

So I simply turned toward the altar.

The pastor looked confused.

“Miss Carter?”

I walked to the front.

Daniel stood several feet away.

He looked like a man watching his entire future disappear.

The pastor cleared his throat.

“Perhaps we should—”

“No.”

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

I looked at Daniel.

“I won’t marry you.”

The entire room went silent.

Someone gasped.

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at me.

“Elena…”

I shook my head.

“No explanations.”

“Please.”

“No.”

His eyes turned red.

“You love me.”

I almost believed him.

Once.

Maybe I still did.

That was the cruelest part.

“I did,” I said.

His face fell.

Then I turned away.

The room exploded into whispers.

People pulled out their phones.

Someone asked what had happened.

Someone else said Daniel had cheated.

Within seconds, my wedding had become a spectacle.

I didn’t care.

I walked down the aisle alone.

I had spent the morning believing I was walking toward my future.

Now I was walking away from it.

I reached the back of the hall.

Then a man’s voice stopped me.

“Then marry me.”

The words were quiet.

But somehow, everyone heard them.

I turned.

A man was standing near the center of the room.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit.

Dark hair.

Sharp features.

Gray-blue eyes that seemed almost cold enough to freeze the room.

I had never seen him before.

At least, I thought I hadn’t.

He looked directly at me.

Not at my dress.

Not at the guests.

Not at Daniel.

At me.

Someone whispered his name.

“Adrian Blackwood.”

Another voice followed.

“The Adrian Blackwood?”

“The billionaire?”

“Why is he here?”

My heart skipped.

I knew the name.

Everyone did.

Adrian Blackwood.

CEO of Blackwood International.

One of the youngest billionaires in the country.

A man who rarely appeared in public.

A man rumored to control half the city’s luxury market.

A man whose name could make business executives nervous.

And he had just proposed to me.

At my wedding.

In front of my cheating fiancé.

I stared at him.

“Excuse me?”

He walked toward me.

One step.

Then another.

The crowd automatically moved aside.

When he stopped in front of me, he was close enough that I could smell his cologne.

Clean.

Dark.

Expensive.

His eyes never left mine.

“You heard me.”

I almost laughed.

“You’re asking me to marry you?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t even know me.”

Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

“That’s where you’re wrong.”

My heart stopped for half a second.

“What?”

He glanced toward Daniel.

Then back at me.

“I know enough.”

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“Blackwood.”

Adrian didn’t even look at him.

“Stay out of this.”

Daniel’s face darkened.

“This has nothing to do with you.”

Adrian finally looked at him.

“I disagree.”

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

Daniel clenched his fists.

“You don’t know anything about us.”

Adrian’s expression remained calm.

“I know you’re planning to acquire Carter assets after the wedding.”

My blood ran cold.

Daniel went completely still.

I looked at him.

“What did he just say?”

Daniel didn’t answer.

I turned back to Adrian.

“How do you know that?”

He reached inside his jacket.

For one terrifying second, I thought he was going to pull out a weapon.

Instead, he took out a thin black folder.

He handed it to me.

I opened it.

The first page was a financial report.

The second was a list of Carter Holdings assets.

The third contained Daniel’s company information.

My eyes moved down the page.

A transaction.

Then another.

Then another.

My hands started trembling.

The dates were from months ago.

Before the wedding.

Before I had ever suspected anything.

At the bottom of the document was a line highlighted in red.

Acquisition to be completed following Elena Carter’s marriage to Daniel Hayes.

I couldn’t breathe.

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at the folder.

“Where did you get that?”

Adrian’s voice was cold.

“Does it matter?”

Daniel’s face had lost all its color.

I looked at him.

“Is this true?”

“Elena—”

“Is it true?”

He didn’t answer.

That silence hurt more than the kiss I’d witnessed.

I closed the folder.

For the first time that day, I looked at Adrian differently.

Not as a stranger.

Not as a billionaire.

But as the only person in the room who seemed to know what was happening.

“Why are you helping me?”

He studied me for several seconds.

Then he said:

“I’m not.”

I frowned.

“Then what are you doing?”

His answer came without hesitation.

“I’m offering you a way out.”

I looked at the ruined wedding behind me.

My sister was still hiding somewhere.

My fiancé had betrayed me.

My family was about to become the subject of every gossip website in the city.

And this dangerous stranger was standing in front of me, offering me a completely impossible escape.

“Why me?”

Adrian’s eyes darkened.

“That,” he said quietly, “is a question we should discuss somewhere private.”

He held out his hand.

I stared at it.

Then at him.

I should have walked away.

I should have called my mother.

I should have gone home.

Instead, I heard myself ask:

“What exactly are you offering?”

Adrian leaned slightly closer.

His voice dropped so only I could hear.

“A marriage.”

My heart stopped.

Then he added:

“Mine.”

Behind me, someone dropped a glass.

The sound shattered across the silent ballroom.

I looked at Adrian Blackwood.

And for the first time that day, I realized something terrifying.

My wedding hadn’t just been ruined.

It had only just begun.
