Daniel came back three days later.

I was leaving a jewelry store when I saw him standing across the street.

My first instinct was to turn around.Full novel: The Billionaire’s Unexpected Wife — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

My second was anger.

My third was exhaustion.

He crossed the street.

“Elena.”

I kept walking.

“Elena, please.”

“No.”

“I need to explain.”

“You had plenty of time to explain before the wedding.”

He caught up with me.

“I made a mistake.”

“You keep calling it a mistake.”

“Because that’s what it was.”

“You were kissing my sister.”

He lowered his voice.

“I know.”

“You were planning to take my family’s assets.”

“I wasn’t going to hurt you.”

I stopped.

“That sentence doesn’t even make sense.”

He looked at me.

“You don’t understand what was happening.”

“Then explain it.”

He hesitated.

I laughed.

“Exactly.”

“Elena, Adrian is using you.”

I looked at him.

“You cheated on me, and now you’re worried about who I’m marrying?”

“You don’t know him.”

“Neither did I know you.”

His expression tightened.

“I loved you.”

“Then why did you do it?”

“I was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Losing everything.”

I stared at him.

“So you decided to take everything from me first.”

His eyes dropped.

“I never wanted it to go this far.”

“Then why were you going to marry me?”

“I didn’t marry you.”

“You were going to.”

“Yes.”

“For my family.”

He hesitated.

“For the opportunity.”

I felt something inside me go completely still.

“Thank you.”

He looked confused.

“For finally telling the truth.”

I turned.

He grabbed my wrist.

I pulled away.

He released me immediately.

“Elena.”

I walked away.

Then he said something that stopped me.

“Adrian knew you before that night.”

I turned slowly.

“What?”

“He knew you.”

Daniel looked almost desperate now.

“I don’t know how long. But he knew your family.”

“That’s not possible.”

“Ask him.”

I stared at Daniel.

“Why would I believe you?”

“Because this time I’m telling you something you don’t know.”

I left without answering.

That evening, Adrian was waiting in the library.

He looked up when I entered.

“You’re angry.”

“Did you know me before the wedding?”

Silence.

That was all I needed.

“You did.”

“Elena—”

“When?”

He stood.

“It was years ago.”

“How many?”

“Ten.”

My stomach dropped.

“Ten years?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“You wouldn’t remember.”

“Try me.”

He walked toward the window.

“You were younger.”

“How old?”

“Seventeen.”

I stared at him.

“You knew me when I was seventeen?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I was twenty-one.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“You were with your parents.”

“Where?”

“A charity event.”

I searched my memory.

There were hundreds.

My father attended them constantly.

I shook my head.

“I don’t remember you.”

“I know.”

“Because I didn’t think it mattered.”

I laughed.

“You proposed to me two days ago.”

“It matters now.”

“Did you plan this?”

“No.”

“Did you know I would be at that wedding?”

“No.”

“Then why did you propose?”

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“Adrian.”

His eyes met mine.

“Because when I saw you standing there, I knew exactly who you were.”

The words sent a chill through me.

“Who am I?”

His expression changed.

“You’re Elena Carter.”

“That’s not what you meant.”

He looked away.

I followed his gaze.

On a side table was a framed photograph.

I picked it up.

It was old.

The image was faded.

A younger Adrian stood beside my father.

And beside them— me.

Seventeen years old.

Smiling.

I looked at Adrian.

“You kept this?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He didn’t answer.

I turned the photograph over.

There was writing on the back.

My father’s handwriting.

Some things should stay buried.

I stared at the words.

Then I looked at Adrian.

“What happened that night?”

His face went cold.

“I’ll tell you.”

“When?”

“When you’re ready.”

I laughed bitterly.

“You keep saying that.”

He stepped closer.

“This time, I mean it.”

I held the photograph tightly.

Because suddenly I knew one thing.

Our marriage hadn’t started at the wedding.

Something had started ten years earlier.

And I had simply been the last person to find out.
