Lu Jinming’s miserable shrieks from last night were still echoing in his ears, and Shen Jin did not want to become the second victim of abuse.
Yao Yueying stepped forward in time to lend a hand. Shen Jin finally steadied himself, smiling to show he was fine.
Seeing the doctor’s row of silver needles made Lu Jinming’s flesh ache. Unable to maintain his composure, he muttered to himself, “Anyone who gets close to that crazy woman becomes unfortunate.”
Lin Rongrong glanced at him but didn’t say anything. Honestly, she thought Yin Shuwei was quite nice and lived a very free and unfettered life.
After Shen Jin repeatedly emphasized that he was fine, the production team finally relaxed. The six guests finally gathered together to study the tasks assigned by the program.
After seeing the contents clearly, hardly anyone could keep a straight face.
【What the hell? Oh my god, I can’t believe my eyes. Isn’t this an emotional romance variety show?】
【Director Zhen, have you finally lost your mind?】
【Goddamn production team, you’re making our CEO Shen suffer so much!!!】
Just look at what the production team had written on the task cards: harvesting rice, plowing fields, sowing seeds, picking corn, herding sheep, herding cattle, picking mushrooms…
After a closer look, Yin Shuwei was amazed. “My goodness, an emotional variety show dramatically changed into Let’s Farm, Couples. Does the production team really want to solve our problems? Or do they simply want to send us for labor reform?”
Yu Xingzhi picked up the conversation thread. “X-Change: Couples Edition.[1]The Real Show: X-Change (变形计 – Biànxíng Jì) Yu Xingzhi is referring to a wildly famous, long-running Chinese reality TV show produced by Hunan TV called X-Change (变形计 – … Continue reading jQuery('#footnote_plugin_tooltip_2033922_1_1').tooltip({ tip: '#footnote_plugin_tooltip_text_2033922_1_1', tipClass: 'footnote_tooltip', effect: 'fade', predelay: 0, fadeInSpeed: 200, delay: 400, fadeOutSpeed: 200, position: 'top center', relative: true, offset: [-7, 0], });”
【Hahahaha the way these two talk is too funny, every sentence hits the nail on the head.】
【I’m here to watch the love and hate entanglements of handsome men and beautiful women, not farming!!!】
Lu Jinming’s face truly distorted as he questioned Director Zhen. “Are you serious? Making us farm? Me, the dignified CEO of Chengyuan Group—you want me to do this?”
For the first time, Yao Yueying’s words were sharp. “Shen Jin, you said you were bringing me out to have fun, and it turns out to be this?”
“I’m not filming anymore.” Lu Jinming angrily went on strike.
Lin Rongrong blinked. “Eh, eh, eh?”
She hadn’t even said anything yet, what was this man trying to do now?
Seeing that Lin Rongrong was about to chase after Lu Jinming, Yin Shuwei said, “Do you always accommodate him like this?”
“But he…”
“He didn’t even consider you when he left.”
Lin Rongrong fell silent. It seemed she was always compromising—intermittently tough, but continuously compromising. In the end, she would always be led by the nose by Lu Jinming anyway.
“If you want to resist, be firmer. Otherwise, this is all just part of your twisted dynamic.” Yin Shuwei was concise and to the point.
Lin Rongrong waved her hands repeatedly. “I’m not! We aren’t into that kind of play!”
How strange; it sounded even stranger after saying it out loud.
But with someone standing on her side, Lin Rongrong was actually less conflicted, and she really just stood there without moving.
Lu Jinming had walked away for quite a while. This was the countryside; even following the main road, he couldn’t see a shadow of the city. There were only endless mountains, one after another. He felt like if he kept walking, he would turn into a savage.
Turning his head, he didn’t see Lin Rongrong chasing after him. With his hands in his pockets, he waited for a good while. Finally, Lu Jinming silently walked back.
Director Zhen was trying his best to quibble. “How is it unrelated to mediating family conflicts and emotional issues? This is already the third episode of the show. We’ve absorbed a massive amount of lessons before coming up with this new plan.”
“So the new plan is to send us for reform, is that it?” Yin Shuwei said.
Director Zhen didn’t dare look Yin Shuwei in the eyes, glancing to the side. “How could that be? We are cleansing our souls, abandoning our sorrows, and experiencing a life like the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl.”
Yin Shuwei really couldn’t stand it. “Who runs off to farm when they’re arguing about divorce? And what’s so touching about the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl? That is clearly…”
The moment those two words were about to pop out, Director Zhen hunched over and sprinted toward Yin Shuwei, his voice trembling. “I’m begging you, my grand-aunt—”
Yin Shuwei reacted faster than him, running so fast she left afterimages on the road.
Director Zhen pushed his body to its absolute limits. “You can’t say it, you can’t say it! I’ll give you two eggs—”
“No, eight!”
“Eight is too many! Six!”
“Deal.”
Yin Shuwei suddenly stopped by the roadside. With absolutely no guard up, Director Zhen had no time to brake and fell plop into the ditch by the road. The assistant director and other staff frantically tried to rescue him, but due to their lack of experience, several more fell in during the panic.
The guests hadn’t even started suffering yet, but the production team was the first to experience torment.
【Why did you have to provoke her…】
【Actually, I also think the story of the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl isn’t sweet at all, it’s pretty creepy. I support Yin Shuwei this round.】
【What are you guys doing? Treating this variety show like a competitive match?】
【Isn’t it? Yin Shuwei VS everyone else.】
Having protected his show, Director Zhen had lingering fears. Good thing he was sensitive enough to stop Yin Shuwei’s words in time, otherwise the show might have been taken off the air. It wasn’t easy for him either; he just wanted to lean into traditional stories a bit.
The assistant director, his two shoes soaking wet, stood nearby and said gloomily, “Old Zhen, I told you earlier that young people nowadays don’t buy into that traditional marriage stuff. You wouldn’t listen, and now you’ve dragged me down with you.”
“Shut up, shut up, shut up, you’re so annoying.”
“…”
After the farce, Lu Jinming realized that even fewer people cared about him. No one asked if he was still filming, nor did they care where he just went. After much thought, he could only swallow his anger and pretend nothing happened as he chose a task card.
Completing tasks could be exchanged for food with the villagers. Based on the difficulty, tasks were divided into 50 to 100 points. Accumulated points could be exchanged with the production team for extra food or supplies.
“Rongrong, let’s go herd sheep. Those little things going ‘baa baa’ seem like they’d be cute,” Lu Jinming suggested.
Lin Rongrong was a bit surprised. She had already prepared herself for Lu Jinming to be angry. She didn’t expect that by ignoring him, he would actually become polite.
“Then let’s do this one.” Lin Rongrong did not refuse.
Lu Jinming laughed. “Maybe if we do a good job, the owner might even give us a little mutton.”
Lin Rongrong was noncommittal.
【Okay, okay, okay, I see you just want to eat mutton, kid.】
【Herding sheep isn’t an easy job, does he even understand? The difference between a human and a border collie can sometimes be very large.】
【I don’t think CEO Lu knows…】
Yin Shuwei had discussed it with Yu Xingzhi beforehand; she planned to go foraging in the wild. This task had a large activity range and was relatively free. Points would be measured based on the guests’ final harvest.
“You guys are going to do that?” Shen Jin stood nearby, voicing his disapproval. “Both of your family backgrounds are quite good, and you have little life experience. Don’t skip your tasks just because you want to play around.”
“Mind your own business.” Yin Shuwei shot back mercilessly.
Shen Jin choked on his words. He took a few deep breaths and held back his temper, turning his head to say to Yao Yueying, “How about we go herd cows? That seems a bit easier.”
Yao Yueying didn’t refuse, but she didn’t stop complaining either. “You better watch the cows carefully, I don’t know how to do it. If I had known, I wouldn’t have come here with you. It would be so nice if I were at home. You just love to mess around.”
Throughout the whole process, Shen Jin was coaxing her. However, if one observed carefully, they would realize Shen Jin’s words were superficial, more like perfunctory brush-offs.
It wasn’t until the live broadcast cameras were further away that Yao Yueying suddenly leaned close to Shen Jin. “Which one do you actually have your eye on?”

The premise of the real show is basically a harsh reality check. It takes incredibly spoiled, rebellious, and wealthy teenagers from the city and forces them to swap lives with impoverished, hardworking teenagers from rural mountain villages for a few weeks.The wealthy city kids are stripped of their phones, money, and luxuries, and are forced to do grueling farm work, hike miles to school, and live in extreme poverty. The goal is for them to experience “labor reform,” realize how privileged they are, and cry until their bad attitudes are “transformed.” function footnote_expand_reference_container_2033922_1() { jQuery('#footnote_references_container_2033922_1').show(); jQuery('#footnote_reference_container_collapse_button_2033922_1').text('−'); } function footnote_collapse_reference_container_2033922_1() { jQuery('#footnote_references_container_2033922_1').hide(); jQuery('#footnote_reference_container_collapse_button_2033922_1').text('+'); } function footnote_expand_collapse_reference_container_2033922_1() { if (jQuery('#footnote_references_container_2033922_1').is(':hidden')) { footnote_expand_reference_container_2033922_1(); } else { footnote_collapse_reference_container_2033922_1(); } } function footnote_moveToReference_2033922_1(p_str_TargetID) { footnote_expand_reference_container_2033922_1(); var l_obj_Target = jQuery('#' + p_str_TargetID); if (l_obj_Target.length) { jQuery( 'html, body' ).delay( 0 ); jQuery('html, body').animate({ scrollTop: l_obj_Target.offset().top - window.innerHeight * 0.2 }, 380); } } function footnote_moveToAnchor_2033922_1(p_str_TargetID) { footnote_expand_reference_container_2033922_1(); var l_obj_Target = jQuery('#' + p_str_TargetID); if (l_obj_Target.length) { jQuery( 'html, body' ).delay( 0 ); jQuery('html, body').animate({ scrollTop: l_obj_Target.offset().top - window.innerHeight * 0.2 }, 380); } }
