Chapter 15

THE CEO'S SECRET TWINS

*Chapter 15:

First Visit*

Thursday came in gray.

Rain on the windows. Rain on the fire escape.

Jane had cleaned the whole bedsit twice. There was still laundry on the rack and crayon on the wall.

Aiden asked 4 times: “Is he really coming?”

Aria asked 8 times: “Can he bring cake?”

Grandma just kept making tea no one would drink.

*4:58 PM - The Knock*

Three knocks. Soft.

Not CEO knocks. Nervous knocks.

Jane opened the door.

Ryan was standing there with two bags and the most awkward expression Jane had ever seen on a billionaire.

One bag: toys. Legos. Dolls. A stuffed dog.

The other bag: groceries. Milk. Bread. Fruit. Diapers, even though the twins were 4.

“I didn’t know what they liked,” Ryan said quickly. “So I got... everything.”

Jane stepped aside. “Come in.”

Aiden was on the couch, reading. He didn’t look up.

Aria was at the table, drawing. She did look up.

“You brought stuff!” she yelled, and ran over.

Ryan crouched down, awkward. “Hey. I, uh. I thought maybe you’d want to build something.”

He held out the Legos.

Aria took them. “Okay. Will you help?”

“Yeah,” Ryan said. “I’d like that.”

He sat on the floor. In a $3000 shirt. On a rug with stains.

And built a Lego tower with a 4-year-old.

Aiden watched from the couch. Serious. Judging.

*5:30 PM - The Kitchen*

Jane poured coffee. Her hands were shaking.

Ryan stood in her tiny kitchen like he didn’t know where to put his hands.

“How are they?” he asked quietly.

“Good,” Jane said. “Tired. Aiden had a cold last week.”

“I saw,” Ryan said. “At lunch.”

He paused. “Can I... can I ask you something?”

Jane nodded.

“Do they have nightmares?”

Jane went still. “Sometimes. Aria doesn’t. Aiden does. About loud noises.”

Ryan’s jaw tightened. “From that night?”

Jane didn’t answer. She didn’t have to.

Ryan looked at the floor. “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Jane.”

“I know,” Jane whispered. “But sorry doesn’t fix it.”

“No,” Ryan said. “But showing up might.”

*6:15 PM - The Living Room*

The Lego tower was 3 feet tall.

Aria was narrating a story about a princess and a dog.

Ryan was listening like it was a board meeting.

Aiden finally got off the couch. Walked over. Stood next to Ryan.

Didn’t say anything. Just watched him build.

Ryan glanced up. “Hey, buddy. Want to add a piece?”

Aiden shook his head.

“But you can sit,” Ryan said.

Aiden sat. Not close. But not far.

Three inches between them.

Ryan didn’t push. He just kept building.

After 10 minutes, Aiden picked up a blue Lego and put it on top.

Ryan smiled. Small. Real.

“Good choice.”

*7:00 PM - Leaving*

Ryan stood up. His knees cracked.

“I should go,” he said. “Let you guys have dinner.”

Aria hugged his leg. “Will you come back?”

“Yes,” Ryan said immediately. “Monday. If that’s okay with your mom.”

Jane nodded.

Ryan pulled out an envelope. Set it on the table.

“For expenses. Groceries. Whatever you need.”

Jane didn’t touch it. “I don’t want your money.”

“It’s not for you,” Ryan said. “It’s for them.”

Jane picked it up. Didn’t open it.

“Thank you.”

At the door, Ryan paused. Looked at all three of them.

“I’m glad I met you,” he said. To the twins. “Both of you.”

Aria waved.

Aiden gave a small nod.

The door closed.

*7:10 PM - After*

The second he was gone, Aria exploded.

“He’s nice! Can he come every day? Can we go to his house? Does he have a dog?”

Aiden was quiet. He walked to the table and picked up the envelope.

Handed it to Jane.

“Is he gonna take us away?” he asked.

Jane knelt down. “No, baby. No one is taking you away. Ever.”

Aiden studied her face. Then nodded. “Okay.”

Grandma opened the envelope.

Inside: a check. $50,000.

And a note, handwritten:

_For the garden house. -R_

Jane stared at it for a long time.

Then she folded it and put it in a drawer.

*Meanwhile - Ryan’s Car*

Ryan sat in the backseat, not moving.

Mira was in the front.

“How did it go, sir?”

Ryan rubbed his face. “He has my frown. She has my stubbornness.”

He laughed. It sounded broken.

“I built Legos with my daughter today, Mira. And my son let me sit next to him.”

Mira didn’t say anything.

Ryan looked out the window.

“I’m not going to lose them,” he said quietly. “Not again. Not to time. Not to anyone.”

*That Night - The Bedsit*

The twins were asleep.

Jane sat at the table with the check in front of her.

Grandma sat across from her.

“What are you thinking?” Grandma asked.

Jane traced the signature. _R. Sterling_

“I’m thinking,” Jane said slowly, “that maybe we don’t have to run anymore.”

Grandma reached across and took her hand.

“Then we don’t.”

Outside, the rain stopped.
