The copper wire felt cold and greasy as Miles stripped the plastic insulation with his back teeth, spitting the bitter synthetic scraps onto the wet gravel.

He stood on a rusted metal drum dragged from the corner of the lot, arms reaching high into the humid air to twist the bare metal leads together.

The connections were crude — the terminal blocks on the back of the horn speaker choked with white aluminum corrosion — but the moment his fingers brushed the metal, the gold lines in his eyes flared, showing him the invisible pulse of the network.Full novel: THE CREATOR SYSTEM — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Perimeter Medium Detected: Horn Array 01.

Compensation Active.

He jumped down, boots hitting the loose stones with a sharp crunch, and ran the wire back through the gap in the office doorframe.

No amplifier, no mixing console — but the mutated laptop didn’t need them anymore.

He sliced the other end of the copper cable and jammed the bare strands straight into the half-melted headphone jack, forcing the copper into warped plastic until it clicked against the internal contacts.

The screen lurched.

The dark gold waveforms stretched apart into thin horizontal lines, spreading out like a telephone grid across a map.

A low, hollow hiss leaked from the metal horns outside — not the loud, violent rumble from the apartment stairwell, but quiet ambient white noise blending into the distant rush of the expressway.

To anyone walking past the chain-link fence it would sound like wind through an old pipe.

To Miles, the frequency was a live wire; he could feel the boundary of the lot in his jaw, a faint vibration marking exactly where his territory ended and the street began.

He collapsed into the broken plastic chair behind the counter, chest heaving, staring at the countdown.

Time Remaining: 11 Hours, 23 Minutes.

System Synchronization: 72%.

Night was finally bleeding into dawn.

His hands shook too hard to hold his phone steady, the physical toll of a night spent mixing cement and running wire catching up to him all at once.

He closed his eyes, meaning to rest them for five minutes.

A sharp mechanical click bounced off the concrete bays — not from his phone, from the horn speakers outside.

His eyes snapped open.

On the monitor, the smooth horizontal lines were breaking, small jagged purple spikes erupting along the western edge of the grid, right where the alleyway met the main avenue.

Alert: Anomalous Signal Detected.

Frequency Signature: 88.3MHz — Vertex Mobile Router.

Distance: 150 Meters.

Closing.

The street was still dark, but morning fog had rolled in thick from the coast, turning the streetlights into blurry floating orbs.

Down at the corner of the lot, beside the tire repair shop, a pair of headlights cut through the mist — not moving fast, drifting along the curb on a silent electric drive, the slow predatory patience of a shark circling a reef.

They’d found him.

Not through the streets, but the digital airwaves.

The system had warned him the master repository download would draw pings, and he hadn’t finished synchronizing in time.

Target Intrusion Imminent.

Weaponized Audio Protocol: Standby.

Current Reach Modifier: 5.0x — Area Exposure Ready.

His hand hovered over the keyboard, fingers stiff.

The spacebar was gone, nothing left but a jagged plastic crater in the melted chassis, but the copper wire running to the PA horns pulsed against his thumb with a terrible golden heat.

No knife.

No crew.

Just a rusted lot, a shovel full of wet cement, and a network screaming at him to pull the trigger.
