Ronke didn’t move.

For a moment she just stood there, the streetlight catching the side of her face, and Miles watched something pass behind her eyes that he hadn’t seen from her before — not the tired patience, not the careful control of the warehouse.

“Say that again,” she said quietly, to the man on the ground.

“They said the name Ronke.” His voice shook, but he didn’t look away from her.

“Not a company.

Not Vertex.

Just — Ronke.

Said to collect something from the car wash on this street, said you’d know what it meant if we mentioned your name in case things went sideways.”

The gold text at the edge of Miles’s vision sharpened, cutting between him and her like a blade drawn slow out of a sheath.

Threat Reassessment: Required.

Trust Index (Subject: Ronke): Recalculating.

“Turn that off,” Ronke said, not looking at Miles, still looking at the man on the ground.

“Whatever it’s telling you right now, turn it off and listen to me instead.”

Miles didn’t turn it off.

But he didn’t look away from her either.

“Talk,” he said.

Ronke exhaled, long and slow, the kind of breath a person takes before setting down something heavy they’ve been carrying so long they forgot the weight of it.

“Three years ago, before the blog, before I lost it, before any of what I told you in that warehouse — I didn’t just work for the people your system is fighting.” She crouched down, checking the unconscious man’s pulse again, more out of habit than need, buying herself a second before she had to finish the sentence.

“I ran a crew.

Four, five people at a time, depending on the job.

We collected things.

Data.

Hardware.

Sometimes just information nobody wanted written down anywhere official.” She glanced up at him.

“The kind of work these two just did tonight.

I used to be the one giving that order, Miles.

Not receiving it.”

“And you stopped.”

“I stopped running it myself.

I never fully closed it down.” Her jaw tightened.

“There’s a difference, and I let myself pretend for three years that the difference didn’t matter, because I wasn’t the one making the calls anymore.

But somebody still has the contacts.

Somebody still has my old name floating around as a password that opens doors I thought I’d locked.”

The man on the ground — the one still conscious — had gone quiet, watching this exchange like someone realizing, too late, that he’d wandered into something much bigger than a simple job.

“We didn’t know,” he said again, quieter now.

“We were told it was low risk.

Told the location, told to expect no resistance.”

“No resistance,” Ronke repeated, real anger in it now, the first Miles had heard from her.

“Because whoever gave you that job either doesn’t know what Miles built here, or knew exactly what he built and sent you anyway, expecting you to be the ones who found out the hard way.” She rose to her feet, and for once she looked less like a watcher and more like someone standing in the wreckage of a decision she’d made a long time ago and never finished cleaning up. The gold text pulsed once, insistent, hanging in the space between them.

Miles’s eyes moved from the text to Ronke, then back to the two men — one still breathing shallow on the concrete, the other watching him with the wide, terrified eyes of a man who’d expected a quiet pickup job and gotten a live wire instead.

“You didn’t send them,” Miles said slowly, working it out loud the way he’d worked out the wiring the night before, piece by piece, testing each connection before trusting it.

“But somebody who used to answer to you did.

Somebody who still thinks your name means something.”

“Yes.”

“Who.”

Ronke’s face went very still, the particular stillness of someone about to say a name they’d hoped never to say out loud again.

“His name is Fela Adeyemi,” she said.

“He was my second, back when I ran the crew.

I trained him myself.” Her gaze drifted past Miles, toward the warehouse three streets over, toward the wall of monitors and the forty-two loops and everything she’d built to try to atone for a version of herself she thought she’d buried.

“And if he’s still active, still running jobs off my old name, then he’s the one who planted the relay behind your speaker in the first place.

Not Vertex.

Not the registry.”

She met Miles’s eyes again, and the fear that had flickered across her face earlier had settled into something harder, more resolved.

“He’s been watching you since before I ever walked through that door,” she said.

“And now he knows I’m the one standing next to you when his men didn’t come back.”
