Only the refrigerator hummed.

Miles kept his fingers on the plastic blind, cold and sticky with dust under his fingertips.

Down below, the sedan sat where it was, tailpipes coughing out another cloud of vapor.Full novel: THE CREATOR SYSTEM — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The brake lights flared once — a sudden splash of red against the dark asphalt — then faded back to dull amber.

Someone was in the front seat; he could just make out the blue glow of a phone screen lighting up a jawline.

His phone rattled once on the desk behind him.

He didn’t turn around.

His eyes stayed on the car.

The blue lines in his vision adjusted, the text creeping toward the center of his sight until it blotted out the street entirely.

THREAT ASSESSMENT: MINIMAL.

RECOMMENDED ACTION: IGNORE AND EXECUTE PATCH v1.2.

LIQUID ASSETS WILL BE DEDUCTED AUTOMATICALLY.

“Deducted,” he said, the word puffing dry against the glass.

He glanced at his open wallet on the desk.

The bills hadn’t changed.

The real world was still broke.

But behind his eyes the system was already moving numbers around like it owned them.

A sharp click came from the laptop.

The green flicker on the screen went wild, static running vertically through the Vertex Audio email, and the fan screeched once — a high, metal-on-metal grind — before dying completely.

The screen went black, then lit again with a single line, not from his eyes this time but from the machine itself.

[INSTALLING PATCH v1.2…]

[ACCOUNT BALANCE: $642.10]

It didn’t ask.

It just took.

The phone buzzed twice.

A message from the same unknown number.

Nice window blinds, Miles.

Look down.

He didn’t go back to the window.

He stood in the middle of the room instead, under the bare bulb, his shadow stretching long and warped across the peeling wall paint.

The blue text started flashing.

EXTERNAL DISTRACTION DETECTED.

CREATIVE POTENTIAL DROPPING: 82/100.

ELIMINATE THE DISTRACTION.

“How?” His hands had gone cold, the chill crawling up toward his wrists.

The text shifted again.

USE THE COMPROMISED AUDIO FILE.

DISTORT THE SAMPLE FREQUENCY TO 432HZ.

RE-UPLOAD DIRECTLY TO THE STREET NETWORKS.

THEY ARE LISTENING IN THE CAR.

He looked at the laptop.

The install bar sat at 98%.

Outside, the sedan didn’t honk, didn’t move — just idled, waiting on something.

He reached out and touched the keyboard, the keys greasy under his fingers.

The bar hit 100%, and the laptop didn’t reboot to his desktop — it opened straight into his production software, except the colors were wrong.

The waveforms sat dark purple, jagged like broken glass.

His fingers hovered over the spacebar.

Hit play, and the audio would loop out into the street.

Follow the text, and he’d be aiming it at a car parked outside his own house.

The phone started ringing in his hand — no name, no number, just a blank screen.

He didn’t answer it, but he held it to his ear anyway.

No voice came through.

Just the faint, muffled idle of a car engine, and underneath it, a low distorted hum pulsing at the exact same frequency as the one going off inside his head.
