Chapter 23: The Miracle Recovery

The Cricket System : Rise of the Pace Demon

The harsh, fluorescent lights of the orthopedic clinic hummed a sterile, depressing tune.

Dr. Kapoor, a renowned sports physician in West Delhi, clipped the translucent MRI film onto the glowing lightbox. He traced a pen over the cloudy, frayed white lines near the ball-and-socket joint of the image.

"Grade two tear of the supraspinatus tendon," Dr. Kapoor said flatly, turning to look at Rohan and Coach Sharma. "You are incredibly lucky it didn’t snap completely, son. But it’s severely damaged."

Coach Sharma, looking ten years older than he had that morning, rubbed his face. "How long, Doctor?"

"With aggressive physiotherapy and absolute rest? Four to six weeks before he can even lift a cricket ball," Dr. Kapoor replied, adjusting his glasses. "If he tries to bowl fast before that tendon knits, it will rupture entirely. If that happens, he’ll need surgery, and he can kiss fast bowling goodbye forever."

Rohan sat on the examination table, his right arm bound tightly in a dark blue sling. He looked at the MRI scan, his face completely unreadable.

"The Zonal Finals are next Wednesday, Doctor," Coach Sharma pleaded softly. "He is our strike bowler. We are facing the Delhi State Reserve Squad. Is there any injection... any brace?"

"I am a doctor, Mr. Sharma, not a magician," Dr. Kapoor said sternly. "Cortisone might numb the pain, but the structural integrity of the tendon is compromised. If he plays, he breaks. Simple as that. I’m officially ruling him medically unfit to play."

The ride back to St. Peter’s was agonizingly silent. Coach Sharma dropped Rohan off at the school gates, clapping his uninjured shoulder gently.

"You got us this far, Rohan. You’re a hero to this team," Sharma said, trying to force a smile. "Just rest. Come to the finals in your tracksuits. Sit with me in the dugout. We’ll give the State boys hell, even without you."

"Yeah. See you tomorrow, Coach," Rohan muttered, stepping out of the car.

By 8:00 PM, Rohan was securely locked in his bedroom. His mother had fussed over him for an hour, feeding him hot soup and scolding him for "playing too rough," before finally leaving him to sleep.

The moment the door clicked shut, the facade of the injured, defeated boy vanished. Rohan sat up straight on his bed, his eyes burning with an intense, calculating light.

"System," Rohan commanded in the quiet of his room. "Display Status and open the Advanced Skill Tree."

The blue holographic interface flooded his vision, casting a faint glow on the walls.

[Host Status Panel]

Current Status: [Debuff: Severe Supraspinatus Tear - Right Arm Incapacitated].

Natural Recovery Time: 21 Days.

Rohan swiped the status panel away and brought up the sprawling, glowing roots of the Advanced Skill Tree.

He bypassed The Express Route and The Surgeon branches. He had enough pace and enough swing to terrorize the school circuit. What he lacked right now was a body capable of surviving the forces he was generating.

He focused on the third, green-glowing branch.

[Advanced Skill Tree: The Marathon]

(Focus: Endless Endurance, Consistency, Injury Immunity)

Rohan zeroed in on the very first node of the branch.

[Node 1: Hyper-Metabolic Tissue Repair]

Description: Drastically accelerates cellular regeneration in muscle fibers, tendons, and ligaments. Grants minor resistance to physical stat-backlash.

Passive Effect: Reduces all physical recovery and injury healing times by 80%.

Cost: 45 SP.

Rohan had 88 SP in the bank. He didn’t hesitate for a microsecond.

"Unlock Node 1," Rohan ordered.

[Ding! 45 SP deducted. Remaining SP: 43.]

[Node Unlocked: Hyper-Metabolic Tissue Repair. Applying physiological changes...]

A sudden, intense heat bloomed in the center of his chest. It didn’t feel like the burning fire of an attribute potion; it felt like a warm, soothing current of water rushing through his veins. The current traveled rapidly up his neck and cascaded down into his right shoulder.

The sharp, stabbing pain in his rotator cuff instantly shifted into an aggressive, maddening itch. Beneath his skin, at a microscopic level, cells were multiplying at an explosive, superhuman rate. The frayed edges of his supraspinatus tendon were forcefully knitting themselves back together, binding with dense, reinforced collagen.

Rohan gritted his teeth, gripping the bedsheets with his left hand as the phantom itch deep inside his joint made him want to claw at his own skin.

After five agonizing minutes, the sensation slowly subsided into a dull, manageable warmth.

[Recalculating Injury Status...]

Current Status: [Debuff: Moderate Supraspinatus Tear].

Modified Recovery Time: 4 Days, 6 Hours.

Rohan let out a long, shaky breath, a triumphant smile spreading across his face.

Four days. That meant he would be at 100% health by Sunday night. He would have three full days to practice before the Zonal Finals on Wednesday. Dr. Kapoor had said it would take a magician to heal him. He didn’t have a magician; he had a System.

"I’m not done," Rohan muttered. "System, extract the Intermediate Core Stabilization Blueprint."

A rolled-up, glowing schematic materialized in his mind.

[Analyzing Blueprint: Intermediate Core Stabilization...]

Description: Proper fast bowling biomechanics do not rely solely on the shoulder. This blueprint rewires the Host’s kinetic chain to transfer 40% of the rotational stress from the shoulder joint to the abdominal and oblique muscles.

Integration Status: Ready.

"Integrate it," Rohan commanded.

This time, the shift wasn’t painful, but it was profoundly disorienting. Rohan felt a sudden tightening in his abdomen and lower back. His posture forcibly corrected itself, his spine aligning perfectly. He realized instantly that whenever he bowled from now on, his core would act like a massive shock absorber, taking the brutal kinetic load off his shoulder. It was the ultimate insurance policy against another tear.

Four Days Later — Sunday Morning.

The basement of Iron Core Fitness was completely empty. Vikram had given Rohan the spare key to use the gym on Sundays.

Rohan stood in front of the mirror. He reached up with his left hand and un-velcroed the blue sling. He let it drop to the rubber floor.

He took a deep breath. Slowly, cautiously, he raised his right arm straight out in front of him.

No pain.

He lifted it higher, pointing it straight at the ceiling.

No pain. Just a solid, stable tightness.

He began to rotate his arm, mimicking his bowling action in slow motion. The Hyper-Metabolic Tissue Repair had done its job flawlessly. The tendon was completely healed. Furthermore, as he mimicked the bowling snap, he felt his newly integrated Intermediate Core Stabilization kick in automatically—his obliques tensing like steel cables, anchoring his upper body and completely protecting his shoulder joint from the whiplash.

Rohan grinned at his reflection. He wasn’t just healed; he was biomechanically superior to before.

He pulled out his phone and dialed Aryan’s number. It rang three times before the St. Peter’s captain picked up.

"Roy?" Aryan’s voice sounded groggy. "It’s 7 AM on a Sunday, man."

"Wake up, Captain," Rohan said, his voice crisp and brimming with energy. "We have a final to win."

"Rohan... I told you, man. You can’t bowl," Aryan said, a hint of genuine sadness in his voice. "Coach Sharma has already submitted the playing eleven. He put Sahil in your place."

"Call Coach Sharma. Tell him to meet us at the school nets in exactly one hour," Rohan ordered, tossing a red cricket ball from his left hand to his right. "And bring your batting gear. I need to test something."

"Test what? Roy, your shoulder is torn!"

Rohan’s fingers expertly gripped the seam of the red ball, his Steel Cords & Silk Wrists flexing effortlessly.

"Just tell Coach Sharma to bring the radar gun, Aryan," Rohan said, his smile widening into something dangerous. "I’ll see you in an hour."
