The camp woke early the next morning.

When Arjun opened his eyes, there was a strange dampness in the air.

The clouds that had gathered throughout the night had begun to retreat, but the sky was still far from clear.

A layer of gray mist floated just above the ground, as if the earth itself were holding its breath.

Arjun grabbed his bag, stood up, and quickly stepped outside.

Today, he would travel to the boundary of the Black Forest.

The thought continued to circle through his mind.

Outside the camp, Aarav was already waiting.

A light sack rested over his shoulder, and his face carried the familiar uneasiness anyone might feel before heading into a new mission.

“Ready?” Aarav asked.

Arjun nodded.

“Let’s go.”

They soon reached the storage area, where Nandan was checking several sacks.

Packets of medicine, bags of dried food, and several ropes were arranged before him.

Without wasting time, Nandan said,

“Today’s route isn’t very long, but stay alert.

There has been more activity near the boundary of the Black Forest recently.”

Arjun looked at him.

“What kind of activity?”

Nandan raised an eyebrow.

“Small Beasts.

Predatory animals lying in wait.

And sometimes…”

He paused.

“Things that make even experienced hunters go silent.”

Aarav let out a slightly nervous breath.

“You’re making it sound frightening again.”

Nandan lightly tapped his shoulder.

“Not frightening.”

“Necessary.”

Arjun silently placed the sack over his back.

At that moment, the Blue Jade Stone inside him became slightly warm.

This wasn’t merely physical preparation.

Something else was there.

An unspoken warning.

They left through the western side of the camp.

The old tents gradually disappeared behind them.

The noise of the camp faded.

And the path leading toward the forest became narrower, colder, and increasingly deserted.

[The rustling of wind]

[The sound of footsteps]

As they walked, Aarav suddenly said,

“You’re always so quiet.”

Without looking at him, Arjun replied,

“You talk too much.”

Aarav laughed.

“Fair enough.”

After some time, they finally reached the boundary of the Black Forest.

The place looked strange even from a distance.

The trees were tall and densely packed.

Their branches stretched overhead like black curtains suspended across the sky.

A dim shadow covered everything beneath them.

There were no ordinary dry leaves scattered across the ground.

Instead, the earth was covered with layers of decaying vegetation.

Even the air seemed heavier here.

Arjun took a deep breath and immediately sensed the difference.

The spiritual energy here was different.

Not weaker.

Heavier.

Corrupted.

And settled into the land like an ancient, sealed danger.

Near the entrance stood a small stone engraved with the camp’s symbol.

This was the boundary.

Beyond it began the forest.

Aarav lowered his voice.

“People say strange laughing sounds come from here.”

Arjun looked at the stone.

“Really?”

Aarav shrugged.

“Some say they hear them at night.”

“Others say they’ve heard them during the day too.”

Arjun asked no further questions.

He wanted to see it for himself.

They slowly moved forward.

The moment they crossed the boundary, the air became colder.

[The faint rustling of leaves]

The forest wasn’t literally black from within.

But it was incredibly dense.

So dense that sunlight could barely reach the ground.

Dark green and black patches covered the tree bark.

The earth between the roots was wet.

Arjun looked around.

There was no obvious sound.

Only a faint breeze.

And somewhere in the distance, the soft sound of dripping water.

Aarav spoke quietly.

“We won’t go too deep.”

“We’ll only patrol near the boundary.”

“If we find any suspicious signs, we return immediately.”

Arjun nodded.

At that moment, he noticed several small footprints in the soil.

He crouched down.

The tracks were fresh.

“Something passed through here,” he said quietly.

Aarav immediately came closer.

“When?”

Arjun touched the soil with his fingers.

“Not long ago.”

Both of them looked up.

Something was glinting on a lower branch of a nearby tree.

Very small.

Barely visible.

[A faint, subtle rattling]

Arjun narrowed his eyes.

It wasn’t a leaf.

It was a thin strip of bone caught between the branches.

Something red stained one of its edges.

Aarav whispered,

“What is that?”

Arjun didn’t answer.

He slowly approached the tree and looked upward.

Then—

Something moved between the trees.

[The sudden rustling of bushes]

Arjun immediately stepped backward.

A small Beast, roughly the size of a dog, burst from the bushes and ran away.

Its eyes were yellow.

Dirty foam covered the corners of its mouth.

But it wasn’t charging toward them.

It was running away from them.

Aarav held his breath.

“It didn’t attack us.”

Arjun’s voice remained cold.

“Because it was frightened.”

Aarav stared at him.

“Frightened of what?”

Arjun’s eyes remained fixed deeper inside the forest.

“Something bigger.”

“Or something I can’t see yet.”

[A faint growl in the distance]

Aarav immediately said,

“We should move back.”

But Arjun didn’t move.

His eyes had stopped on a patch beneath the bushes.

There were fresh splatters of blood.

And beside them lay a small broken piece of metal—a fragment of an old hunter’s chain or tool.

Arjun picked it up.

The instant he touched it, the Blue Jade Stone inside him grew warm.

Very slightly.

But unmistakably.

Arjun’s eyes widened.

This wasn’t just a forest.

Something else was here.

“Arjun…”

Aarav’s voice was quiet and nervous.

“Look.”

Arjun raised his head.

Beyond the bushes stood a shadow.

Completely still.

So still that it looked less like a living creature and more like some ancient remnant that had been frozen in place.

Its outline was vaguely human.

But its face was blurred.

Its clothes were torn.

And the air behind it seemed unnaturally cold.

[Deep, prolonged silence]

Aarav stepped backward.

“What…”

“What is that?”

Arjun’s fingers tightened around the black iron spike.

The shadow took one step forward.

Then another.

Suddenly, something broke deep inside the forest.

[CRASH!]

The shadow immediately turned.

And disappeared between the trees.

“We need to leave.

Now.”

Arjun nodded.

This time, he did not hesitate.

They quickly retreated.

The air between the trees seemed to grow heavier.

As if the forest itself was trying to hold them back.

As if it were hiding something.

When they reached the boundary, Arjun looked back one more time.

Everything inside the Black Forest looked exactly as it had before.

But Arjun knew one thing with certainty.

This place was not empty.

This place was watching.

[The sound of hurried footsteps]

The two hurried back toward the camp.

During the return, Aarav finally asked,

“The thing you saw…”

“Did it look human?”

Arjun remained silent for a moment.

He didn’t want to give a careless answer.

Finally, he said,

“I’m not sure.”

Aarav’s face became even paler.

“That is not a good answer.”

Arjun shrugged.

“The truth isn’t always good.”

Soon, the camp’s boundary came into view.

Both of them released a breath of relief.

But the uneasiness inside Arjun remained.

The shadow.

The blood.

The strip of bone.

And the reaction of the Blue Jade Stone.

All of them seemed to be pointing toward the same conclusion.

A mystery was awakening inside the Black Forest.

After returning to the camp, they reported everything to Nandan.

Nandan listened carefully.

“Fresh tracks?” he asked.

Arjun nodded.

“Yes.”

“And a shadow.”

Nandan remained silent for several moments.

His gaze dropped toward the ground.

Then he said,

“Then this is serious.”

“We’ll have to be even more careful on the next run.”

Veerbhadra arrived soon afterward.

His eyes immediately settled on Arjun.

“Did you tell anyone else?”

Arjun answered directly.

“No.”

Veerbhadra gave a slight nod.

“Good.”

His voice became even quieter.

“What you see inside the Black Forest isn’t always the complete truth.”

Arjun looked at him.

“And what we don’t see?”

Veerbhadra remained silent for a moment.

Then he said,

“That is what is most dangerous.”

[The deep rush of wind]

Arjun kept those words in his mind.

Later that night, when he returned to his corner, he realized something for the first time.

Even the peace of the camp was incomplete.

Outside was the forest.

Inside were the people.

And between them—

An unfinished path.

Arjun sensed the Blue Jade Stone through his bag.

A faint warmth.

A faint vibration.

As if it were trying to tell him something.

He closed his eyes.

He finally understood that his journey was not merely about gaining strength.

It was also about learning to read paths.

Recognizing hidden shadows.

And connecting the pieces of things that remained incomplete.

And all of this…

Had only just begun.
