The resonance came again a few minutes later.

Faint at first.

Somewhere below the hidden chamber.Full novel: The Dao Engineer: Infinite Reactor System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Dhiraj stayed near the damaged cultivation platform without moving while weak blue light flickered unevenly across the reactor walls.

One of the ceiling panels above him kept making a soft ticking sound every few seconds.

Probably cooling metal.

Or the mountain settling.

Hard to tell anymore.

Each pulse made the qi inside his body react.

Not painfully.

It felt more like vibration spreading through connected steel beams than spiritual pressure.

Subtle, but impossible to ignore once he noticed it.

ASTRA’s projection remained turned toward the lower passage beneath the chamber.

“…resonance frequency inconsistent with known reactor patterns.”

“So there’s something down there.”

“…probability high.”

Dhiraj rubbed tiredly at his face.

That should have been enough reason to avoid the place entirely.

Unfortunately every part of Graystone Mountain seemed designed to reward terrible decisions.

Another tremor passed through the underground structure.

Dust drifted from somewhere overhead and landed across his sleeve.

Far above, faint echoes occasionally rolled through the ruins.

The sect cultivators were still fighting outside.

He tried not to think too much about that.

The downward tunnel beneath the chamber looked narrower now that he was actually standing in front of it.

Cold air drifted upward carrying the smell of wet stone and rusted metal.

There was another scent underneath both of those.

Thick spiritual energy.

Dense enough that his circulation reacted automatically.

His qi started moving slightly faster.

Interesting.

Apparently the deeper sections beneath the reactor complex contained stronger ambient spiritual energy.

That alone explained why cultivators kept throwing themselves into ruins that regularly killed people.

Resources mattered more than safety here.

Still, Dhiraj remained painfully aware of reality.

He was weak.

A few successful circulation improvements did not magically transform a starving miner’s body into a cultivator.

His shoulder still hurt from earlier strain.

His legs occasionally cramped during prolonged circulation control.

Even the refined movement technique exhausted him if he pushed too hard.

And now something unknown was pulsing beneath the mountain.

Great.

He picked up a fractured metal rod from beside the collapsed wall before entering the passage.

The thing was slightly bent near one end and smelled faintly burned.

Improvised weapon.

Terrible weapon.

Better than dying empty-handed.

The lower corridors twisted beneath the reactor chamber through narrow maintenance tunnels lined with broken conduits and damaged formation arrays.

Blue light became weaker the farther he descended.

Some sections remained almost completely dark except for faint reflections from exposed crystal growths embedded into the walls.

Water dripped somewhere ahead.

The deeper levels felt different from the upper ruins.

Less structured.

The reactor hum that filled the upper chambers gradually faded until only distant vibrations remained beneath the stone.

Thick roots pushed through metallic walls in several places.

Pale fungus spread across damaged conduits, glowing weakly under layers of moisture.

One section of the floor had collapsed entirely and been replaced by uneven stone over countless years.

The mountain had started swallowing the reactor.

Or maybe the reactor had infected the mountain first.

Dhiraj honestly had no idea anymore.

“…ambient spiritual density increasing,” ASTRA said.

“I noticed.”

His breathing had become steadier without conscious effort.

The qi inside his meridians circulated more smoothly here, especially through the refined pathways he had adjusted earlier.

But his awareness sharpened.

Sounds carried differently now.

Eventually the narrow corridor opened into a much larger underground cavern, and Dhiraj slowed immediately.

Ancient metallic structures stretched through the cavern walls like buried skeletons beneath layers of rock and crystal growth.

Broken conduits crossed overhead while pale blue liquid flowed through cracked channels carved into the stone floor.

Some parts of the cavern still looked artificial.

Other parts looked like the mountain had simply grown around the ruins until both became impossible to separate cleanly.

One of the nearby conduits sparked weakly every few seconds.

The smell down here was strange too.

Wet stone.

Burned metal.

Fungus.

Old dust.

His sleeve brushed against the cavern wall and came away damp.

The resonance pulsed again.

Closer now.

Dhiraj crouched beside one of the glowing streams carefully.

The pale liquid emitted faint spiritual fluctuations strong enough to stir the qi inside his body automatically.

Interesting.

Probably toxic.

He decided not to touch it.

A scraping sound echoed through the cavern.

Dhiraj froze.

Not machinery.

Movement.

Slow.

Uneven.

Stone dragging against stone.

His grip tightened around the metal rod before he consciously realized it.

The sound came again somewhere beyond a collapsed reactor structure deeper inside the cavern.

Small bits of loose rock shifted quietly.

Then everything went still again.

Dhiraj remained crouched near the glowing stream for almost a full minute.

His legs were starting to ache by the time something finally emerged from behind the debris.

Small.

Four-legged.

At first glance it resembled a mountain fox, though leaner and longer than normal.

Gray-black fur covered most of its body except for faint blue streaks glowing beneath the skin near its spine.

Its silver eyes reflected the cavern light strangely.

The creature moved cautiously toward the glowing liquid streams.

Dhiraj stopped breathing for a second.

The spirit beast looked thin.

Hungry too.

And much faster than him.

“…low-level spiritually mutated predator detected,” ASTRA said.

“Helpful.”

“…host survival probability in direct confrontation: low.”

“Yeah.

Got that part.”

The beast lowered its head near one of the glowing channels, then suddenly stopped.

Its ears twitched.

Dhiraj’s stomach tightened immediately.

It had smelled him.

For several long seconds neither moved.

Somewhere above, water continued dripping steadily through the cavern.

Then the fox-like creature began walking toward him.

Slowly.

Silent paws against wet stone.

Dhiraj forced himself to stay calm while his thoughts started racing anyway.

Running blindly through unfamiliar ruins was a terrible idea.

Fighting directly was worse.

Spirit energy naturally condensed around it in thin streams.

Not overwhelming pressure.

Still enough that Dhiraj could feel it.

Think.

The cavern contained unstable reactor structures.

Broken conduits.

Exposed crystal systems.

Systems.

His gaze shifted briefly toward a damaged conduit hanging low across the cavern wall nearby.

Weak sparks flickered beneath cracked crystal sections.

Unstable energy flow.

The beast kept approaching.

Fifteen meters.

Dhiraj adjusted his breathing carefully while circulating qi through the refined movement pathways he had developed earlier.

The layered circulation held steadier than before despite the fear clawing at his chest.

Interesting.

Fear disrupted the flow, but it no longer collapsed instantly.

The spirit beast lunged.

Fast enough that Dhiraj barely reacted in time.

He threw himself sideways across the stone floor while claws slammed into the spot where he had crouched moments earlier.

Sharp grooves carved through the rock.

The creature twisted immediately for another attack.

Dhiraj sprinted.

Not randomly.

Toward the damaged conduit.

Loose stone cracked beneath his feet while the beast chased him through the cavern darkness.

Its movements blurred unnaturally fast.

Dhiraj’s injured shoulder screamed in protest when he grabbed the hanging conduit with both hands and yanked downward as hard as possible.

For one horrible second nothing happened.

Then the conduit snapped loose.

Blue energy erupted violently across the exposed crystal sections.

The spirit beast collided with the sparking conduit mid-lunge.

A sharp screech echoed through the cavern.

The unstable discharge exploded outward, throwing the creature sideways into broken reactor debris hard enough to crack stone.

Dhiraj stumbled backward breathing hard.

His chest burned.

One of his sleeves had torn near the wrist during the fall and now hung awkwardly against his arm.

The beast twitched violently among scattered sparks and shattered metal.

Still alive.

Of course it was still alive.

Its silver eyes locked onto him again.

Burns covered one side of its body now, but the thing somehow looked even angrier than before.

Dhiraj tightened his grip around the metal rod despite knowing it would do almost nothing.

His circulation felt unstable again.

Too much strain too quickly.

The creature rose slowly from the debris while low growls echoed through the cavern.

Then the resonance beneath the mountain pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

The cavern trembled softly.

The spirit beast froze immediately.

Its ears flattened.

Fear entered its silver eyes so suddenly that Dhiraj almost missed it.

A second later the creature turned and vanished into the deeper darkness without hesitation.

Just gone.

Dhiraj remained standing there breathing hard while sweat cooled across his back.

His legs still trembled slightly from the attack.

That thing could have killed him in seconds.

The thought set tled heavily into his chest now that the adrenaline was fading.

Outside the mining settlements, people like him were prey.

And somewhere deeper beneath Graystone Mountain— something existed that frightened spirit beasts badly enough to make them flee.
