The world sounded different after Qi Refinement.

Dhiraj noticed it while sitting beside the glowing stream with one boot half-submerged near the edge of the water.

At first he thought the cavern had changed somehow during meditation.Full novel: The Dao Engineer: Infinite Reactor System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Then he realized the sounds had already been there before.

Water dripping deeper underground.

Faint crackling from damaged conduits overhead.

Metal grinding somewhere inside the mountain at slow, uneven intervals.

The ruin had never actually been silent.

His body just had not been capable of separating all the noise before.

He rubbed one eye tiredly and stood carefully.

His back popped near the shoulder blade.

That still hurt from the spirit beast encounter yesterday.

Or maybe earlier today.

Hard to tell underground.

Weak blue light reflected across the cavern walls while qi circulated steadily through his meridians.

Not perfectly.

One section near his ribs still felt rough every few breaths, but at least the circulation no longer collapsed immediately.

That alone felt miraculous compared to before.

He inhaled slowly.

The air smelled damp.

Mineral-heavy.

Old dust.

Burned metal.

There was also something bitter near the reactor channels that reminded him vaguely of overheated wiring back on Earth.

Weird thing to remember now.

Even smells felt sharper.

Not dramatically sharper.

Just…

clearer.

More separated.

Dhiraj flexed one hand while watching the tendons move beneath dirty skin.

He still looked terrible.

Thin.

Underslept.

Half-starved.

Cultivation had not transformed him into some immortal genius overnight.

His hair was still uneven from when Shen cut it badly months ago using a chipped mining blade.

His sleeve also kept scratching against his wrist because the stitching had started coming loose.

Still, the changes were real.

The exhaustion from repeated circulation attempts had lessened.

His body responded faster when he moved.

Even the constant dull ache Shen carried from years inside the mines felt lighter beneath the qi flowing through his body.

More connected too.

Earlier, movement constantly interrupted circulation.

Walking while maintaining qi flow had felt like trying to balance water inside cracked glass.

Now the qi adjusted naturally with his breathing and muscle tension.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

He walked slowly across the cavern floor, boots scraping lightly over uneven stone.

Somewhere nearby, a loose piece of metal rattled every few seconds because of airflow through the tunnels.

The sound was getting annoying.

The circulation pathways stabilized automatically during movement.

Dhiraj stopped near the glowing stream again.

“Huh.”

ASTRA flickered into existence beside him, projection slightly distorted near the edges.

“…host physical efficiency improving.”

“How much?”

A brief pause.

“…estimated muscular output increase between eight and eleven percent.”

Dhiraj snorted.

“So basically I’m still weak enough to die horribly.”

“…assessment remains accurate.”

“At least you’re honest.”

He crouched near the water again and stared into the pale blue glow beneath the cracked stone channels.

Earlier the spiritual energy here had felt vague.

More like pressure than anything distinct.

Not visually.

Structurally.

The qi currents flowing through the cavern resembled overlapping streams spreading through the underground ruin.

Some remained stable near active reactor sections.

Others twisted violently around broken formations and collapsed conduits before dispersing into the mountain itself.

The entire reactor complex felt less like machinery now and more like an injured organism breathing underneath Graystone Mountain.

That thought bothered him more than he wanted to admit.

Because his own circulation was beginning to resonate alongside it.

Faintly.

But definitely.

Dhiraj frowned.

The Infinite Reactor Scripture kept changing in small ways every time he improved circulation.

Not rewriting itself exactly.

More like adapting around him.

Tiny pathway adjustments surfaced instinctively while he moved.

His breathing synchronized naturally with nearby resonance flows without conscious effort.

Even the failed circulation attempts from earlier somehow contributed to stabilization instead of becoming wasted effort.

The Scripture incorporated failure into refinement.

That part felt important.

And honestly a little unsettling.

He stood quietly for a while staring deeper into the cavern darkness.

Somewhere below the reactor complex, the resonance source continued pulsing through the mountain at slow intervals.

Each pulse stirred the qi inside his body.

Like distant synchronization.

Dhiraj still had no idea what actually existed further underground.

The spirit beast’s reaction alone suggested something dangerous enough to frighten spiritually evolved predators.

Not a comforting realization.

Another problem had become clearer too.

Cultivators.

He could sense traces of them now.

Not nearby.

Far above.

But during stronger fluctuations, faint spiritual pressure drifted through sections of the ruin.

Earlier he barely noticed anything.

Now cultivator presence stood out immediately against the surrounding qi.

Sharp.

Heavy.

Like pressure building before industrial equipment ruptured.

Dhiraj grimaced slightly.

Qi Refinement apparently improved awareness of danger along with everything else.

Great.

He moved deeper through the cavern while maintaining circulation.

The underground ruin revealed details he had completely missed before.

Tiny spirit insects clustered near glowing mineral deposits hidden beneath cracks in the stone.

Weak qi currents flowed toward active conduits before scattering through damaged sections of the reactor network.

Some cavern walls emitted faint spiritual fluctuations where ancient infrastructure had fused directly into the mountain over centuries.

Cultivation changed perception in uncomfortable ways.

The world no longer felt empty between objects.

Everything carried traces of movement.

Resonance.

Pressure.

Even stillness felt active now.

Dhiraj stopped beside another fractured construct buried beneath collapsed debris.

The humanoid machine looked dead at first glance.

Half its torso had been crushed beneath fallen reactor plating.

But there was still energy inside it.

Dormant.

Residual circulation pathways lingered faintly beneath the damaged shell.

He crouched carefully beside the construct while loose gravel shifted beneath his boots.

Formation lines spread underneath crystal circuitry and strange metallic materials he still could not identify.

Some sections remained completely untouched by corrosion despite spending centuries underground.

Impossible materials.

Impossible engineering.

A civilization advanced enough to merge cultivation and technology into a single system.

And it still collapsed.

That thought stayed with him longer than expected.

Fragments from the earlier visions surfaced again.

Reactor systems failing across entire worlds.

Something spreading through space between the stars.

Dhiraj looked away from the construct and rubbed at the back of his neck.

No answers.

Just fragments.

And honestly, he had more immediate problems right now anyway.

Food.

Shelter.

Not dying.

Compared to whatever destroyed the Stellar Ascendancy, he was insignificant.

Compared to ordinary sect cultivators, honestly.

Qi Refinement improved his survival chances slightly.

Not enough.

Still, small progress mattered.

Underground, small improvements were usually the only reason he survived anything at all.

The layered circulation pathways stabilized more naturally while he walked.

Earlier, maintaining flow required constant concentration.

Now parts of it had become instinctive.

Integrated.

Not effortless though.

Definitely not effortless.

He climbed toward one of the higher ledges overlooking the lower reactor structures.

Halfway up, his sleeve caught on exposed metal and nearly tore completely.

“Seriously…”

He pulled the fabric loose with an annoyed expression.

The deeper resonance beneath the mountain pulsed again.

This time the qi inside his body synchronized almost immediately.

The stabilization effect strengthened noticeably.

ASTRA flickered beside him.

“…host resonance compatibility increasing.”

Dhiraj frowned immediately.

“That sounds unhealthy.”

“…uncertainty acknowledged.”

“Very reassuring.”

He reached the upper ledge and looked out across the cavern.

Blue reactor veins stretched through the underground darkness while pale mist drifted between fractured structures below.

From this height the ruin looked enormous.

Bigger than anything the sects above probably understood.

Which made discovery far more dangerous.

If Black Fang Sect or the other factions realized what existed beneath Graystone Mountain—

No.

Dhiraj stopped the thought there.

He was nowhere near ready for that kind of attention.

A faint vibration interrupted him.

Different from the reactor pulses.

Sharper.

ASTRA’s projection stabilized instantly.

“…multiple spiritual signatures detected.”

Dhiraj straightened immediately.

“Where?”

“…upper cavern sectors.”

The pressure reached him a second later.

Cultivators.

Several of them.

Not close enough to see, but the connected corridors carried traces of their spiritual fluctuations downward through the ruin.

Dhiraj suppressed his circulation instinctively.

The qi inside his body weakened until nearly undetectable.

He blinked.

Interesting.

Qi concealment through circulation reduction.

Another accidental refinement.

ASTRA remained calm.

“…sect scouts appear to have resumed regional search operations.”

Dhiraj stepped away from the ledge without another word.

Far above, faint lights flickered briefly through distant corridors buried inside the reactor structure.

The sects were searching again.

And this time, he could feel them.
