The first sword strike tore the tunnel apart.

Pale green qi flashed across the ruin chamber hard enough to slice through stone, metal, and old support beams together.

For an instant the entire underground corridor turned white-green.Full novel: The Dao Engineer: Infinite Reactor System — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The sound hit a moment later.

A crack like the mountain itself snapping somewhere overhead.

The impact made Dhiraj’s ears ring.

Workers screamed and scattered through the chamber.

Somebody shoved past him hard enough to nearly knock him into the wall while miners scattered in every direction at once.

A lantern fell nearby and rolled across the ground before going out under someone’s boot.

Dhiraj threw himself sideways as broken stone exploded through the corridor.

Sharp fragments hammered the walls around him.

One chunk smashed into the metal beside his head and left a crater almost the size of his fist.

So this was cultivator combat.

Not the exaggerated stories told beside roadside tea stalls.

Not honorable duels between martial artists.

This was violence powerful enough to tear tunnels apart.

This felt closer to standing beside industrial machinery while it came apart at full speed.

The Green River cultivator who attacked first moved through the chamber in a blur beneath the flickering blue ruin light.

His sword dragged long streaks of qi through the air while a Black Fang disciple intercepted him with a curved blade coated in dark red spiritual energy.

The collision shook the corridor again.

Qi burst outward in visible waves.

Several miners near the entrance went flying backward.

One slammed against the wall headfirst and stopped moving after that.

The unstable formation near the tunnel entrance failed seconds later.

Silver lines burned apart across the ground while spirit stones cracked one after another with sharp popping sounds.

Spiritual pressure surged through the chamber unevenly, hot in some places and freezing in others.

Half the lanterns died immediately.

The darkness didn’t fully swallow the ruin, though. The walls lit up instead.

Blue symbols spread across the metallic corridors beneath the mountain like veins carrying light under old skin.

Entire sections of the structure began pulsing while the deep hum rolling through the tunnels grew louder.

Not random.

Steady.

Almost mechanical.

“Retreat!” someone shouted somewhere behind him.

Nobody listened.

The cultivators had already stopped pretending to be cautious.

Another sword strike flashed through the chamber.

This one burned red enough to leave afterimages in Dhiraj’s vision.

The qi slash tore through a support pillar near the ceiling.

Timber burst apart.

Cracks spread through the stone overhead almost immediately.

Dust started raining down.

The entire mountain groaned around them.

Dhiraj shoved himself behind a collapsed ore cart while cultivators clashed farther inside the ruin corridor.

The pressure from their techniques slammed through the air hard enough to make his chest feel tight.

The cart smelled faintly of rust and wet dirt.

Somebody had left a broken hammer beneath it weeks ago.

He forced himself to breathe slowly.

Observe first.

Survive long enough to understand the rest.

The engineer inside him kept noticing things even while people were dying ten meters away.

The ruin only reacted when qi struck certain parts of the structure.

Not everywhere.

Specific sections hidden beneath the dust and stone.

Blue symbols embedded in the walls pulsed unevenly whenever attacks landed nearby.

Some parts of the structure absorbed the force.

Other sections destabilized immediately afterward.

Energy redistribution.

System response.

The pattern felt familiar enough that the conclusion came automatically.

One corridor deeper inside suddenly illuminated after a Black Fang disciple smashed another cultivator against the wall with a palm strike.

For a brief second Dhiraj saw farther into the ruin.

Towering black structures stretching downward through massive underground chambers hidden beneath Graystone Mountain.

Then the lights flickered again.

Most of the chamber disappeared into darkness, broken only by scattered blue light pulsing through the ruins.

A scream echoed somewhere deeper inside the ruin.

Not human.

Something metallic screamed back from the darkness a moment later.

Dhiraj frowned before he could stop himself.

That sound—

Hydraulic pressure release.

His mind rejected the thought instantly.

No.

Impossible.

A Green River cultivator suddenly crashed through a nearby wall and hit the floor hard enough to spray blood across the metal surface.

Before the man could recover, another figure burst through the dust behind him.

Senior Brother Han.

His blade moved once.

The Green River cultivator’s sword shattered instantly.

The pressure from the strike cracked the surrounding corridor walls and sent loose debris raining down from overhead.

Dust filled Dhiraj’s mouth.

It tasted bitter.

The defeated cultivator staggered backward, clutching one ruined arm.

“You dare—”

Han attacked again before the sentence finished.

Red qi exploded through the corridor like burning cloth snapping in the wind.

Stone burst apart.

Metal shrieked somewhere deeper inside the wall.

The entire ruin shook violently.

Dhiraj pressed himself lower while debris crashed around him.

Several miners were knocked down during the panic near the tunnel entrance.

Nobody stopped to help them back up.

At some point survival had become very simple.

Run fast enough or disappear under the rubble.

The hum beneath the ruins deepened again.

It sounded louder now, heavy enough that Dhiraj could feel faint vibrations through the floor beneath his feet.

Blue symbols scattered across the walls began pulsing unevenly in the darkness.

One sect cultivator shouted suddenly, “The spirit systems are destabilizing!”

Spirit systems.

Even through the chaos, that caught Dhiraj’s attention.

So cultivators recognized this place as some kind of functioning structure too.

Not just a ruin full of treasure.

Another tremor rolled through the underground chambers.

This time the sensation felt different.

It was more controlled.

Like power moving deliberately somewhere far beneath the mountain.

Then the corridor ahead opened.

Part of the wall slid sideways into the metal with a grinding mechanical sound buried beneath centuries of dust and decay.

Everyone froze for half a second.

Inside the newly exposed passage, pale blue light spilled into the corridor from a massive underground chamber beyond.

Then greed won again.

Several sect disciples rushed forward immediately.

Dhiraj only saw the chamber clearly for a moment before bodies surged past him.

That moment was enough.

The hidden chamber looked nothing like anything from this world.

Massive cylindrical structures stretched from floor to ceiling beneath layers of glowing blue lines and slowly rotating metallic rings.

Thick black conduits spread through the walls like giant veins while transparent tubes carrying pale flowing light connected different sections together.

The entire chamber felt impossibly old.

Ancient.

Damaged.

And somehow still functioning

The nearest structure looked disturbingly familiar.

It was not identical to Earth technology, it was far beyond it.

But the principles felt recognizable enough to make the back of his neck go cold.

Containment.

Energy circulation.

Stabilization rings.

Reactor architecture.

Dhiraj’s thoughts stumbled over themselves for a second.

No.

That wasn’t possible.

A violent explosion interrupted him.

One cultivator attacked another inside the chamber.

The resulting qi collision slammed directly into one of the metallic pillars.

The ruin reacted instantly.

Blue light surged through every visible conduit at once.

The hum deepened into a roaring vibration that shook the chamber floor beneath their feet.

Then the alarms began.

Not human voices.

Sharp mechanical pulses echoed through the ruin in repeating waves.

Deep rhythmic sounds echoed through the underground complex while sections of the chamber lit up one after another in expanding patterns.

Several cultivators finally looked nervous.

“What did you do?!”

“I barely touched it!”

The glowing structures intensified.

The air itself vibrated now.

Tiny bits of loose stone rattled across the floor around Dhiraj’s boots.

Dhiraj recognized the signs of unstable energy feedback almost immediately.

The entire system beneath the mountain was waking up.

And something inside it was badly damaged.

One of the towering reactor-like structures cracked down the center without warning.

Blue light burst through the fracture.

Arcs of energy lashed across the chamber walls.

A sect disciple caught in the blast vanished before Dhiraj fully understood what he was seeing.

One second the man was there.

The next—

Ash drifted through the blue light.

Nobody spoke for a heartbeat.

Then panic exploded through the chamber.

“Retreat!”

“Get out!”

The cultivators who charged inside moments earlier scrambled backward immediately.

Even Senior Brother Han no longer looked calm.

Another energy arc ripped across the chamber.

The metallic floor beneath Dhiraj’s feet trembled violently.

Then the ruin itself started collapsing.

Sections of the ceiling split apart while ancient supports groaned under unbearable pressure.

Dust and shattered stone crashed downward through the glowing chamber.

After that, the cultivators stopped holding back entirely.

Sword qi flashed wildly through the tunnels as sect disciples fought to escape while sabotaging rivals at the same time.

One Black Fang cultivator deliberately collapsed part of the corridor behind him to trap pursuing Green River disciples.

Another sliced through both enemies and support structures together with a wave of blue qi.

The mountain screamed around them.

Dhiraj started running away from this place.

The tunnels had become chaotic.

Dust blinded half the workers while collapsing stone separated groups randomly throughout the ruin.

Blue emergency lights flickered unevenly across metallic walls as the ancient systems beneath the mountain destabilized further.

The hum had changed now, it was not fully mechanical anymore.

Almost like breathing through damaged lungs.

Dhiraj ducked beneath a collapsing support beam and sprinted through a side corridor partially hidden behind debris.

The floor cracked beneath him immediately.

For one horrible second he lost balance completely.

Then the metal under his feet gave way.

Dhiraj dropped into darkness.the fall felt strangely long.

Stone and broken metal crashed around him while blue light flashed across the shaft walls.

His shoulder slammed into something hard midway down and pain shot through his ribs hard enough to blank his thoughts for a moment.

Then came the impact.

Air exploded from Dhiraj’s lungs as he slammed against solid ground hard enough to blur his vision.

For several seconds he heard nothing except the sharp ringing inside his ears.

Something still hummed faintly in the darkness nearby.

Dhiraj stayed where he was for several seconds staring upward through drifting dust.

Everything in his body hurt.

His ribs burned every time he breathed.

Blood ran warm down one side of his forehead.

His left arm felt weak and wrong.

A faint blue glow illuminated the chamber around him.

He pushed himself upright slowly, one hand against the floor for support.

The metal beneath his palm felt cold enough to sting.

Then he finally looked around properly.

The underground chamber stretched far beyond the reach of the weak blue light surrounding him.

Towering black structures rose overhead like sleeping machines buried beneath the mountain long before human kingdoms existed here.

Broken conduits hung from the ceiling beside enormous circular rings embedded into the walls.

Ancient symbols pulsed faintly across every visible surface.

Somewhere deeper inside the chamber, something massive shifted slowly in the dark.

A low metallic sound echoed through the ruin.

Then a cold mechanical voice spoke for the first time in countless years.

“…power restoration attempt… failed…”
