Subaru discovered she could mist travel.

Which, honestly? Kinda cool.

She had been pacing in frustration, trying to clear her mind, when the mist clinging to her body suddenly shifted. One second, she was walking across the room—the next, her body dissolved into swirling black vapor, reforming several feet away without even thinking about it.Full novel: The Day I Became The Witch Of Envy (Subaru Becomes Satella) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

She stood there, blinking.

Then, cautiously, she tried it again.

And sure enough, the mist responded instantly. Her body dissolved and reassembled wherever she willed it.

No footsteps. No weight. No sound.

She could move like a ghost, slip through places unseen, vanish and reappear in the blink of an eye.

In any other situation, she might've been excited.

But right now?

She hated it.

Because of course her powers were dull and negative.

Rot. Decay. Darkness. Fear.

Nothing bright. Nothing good.

And it showed in everything around her.

The sky? Still black.

The trees? Still dead.

The closest forest? Gone.

Thanks to her.

Her stomach twisted.

She hated herself.

She had always wanted to be a hero.

Someone who saved people, who protected the weak, who stood in the light.

But now? What was she?

Some gloomy, death-bringing villain with nothing to offer but destruction.

What was she supposed to do?

Sit here in this rotting nightmare until some hero showed up and put her down?

Was that her endgame?

She didn't know.

And that scared her more than anything.

If she was fated to be doomed, then why not make the most of it?

That thought had been gnawing at the back of her mind ever since she realized there was no way out.

She was stuck in this body.

Stuck as Satella.

And no hero was coming to save her.

So if she was destined to be this nightmare, then why not lean into it a little?

Not evil-evil, like the original Satella—but, you know… maybe something a bit conqueror-like?

Maybe take territories, build something powerful, create an empire under her rule—

No.

Bad Subaru.

That was dangerous thinking. Visit g.com for the full chapter.

She wasn't a dictator. She wasn't some power-hungry warlord.

She had to keep control of herself.

But still… what if?

What if she brought all the nations under one flag?

Not in a slaughter-everyone-and-burn-the-world way, like her cultists would prefer—but in a way that actually united the lands under something stronger?

It sounded cool.

It sounded huge.

But it also sounded completely unrealistic.

Her followers wouldn't allow it.

They wouldn't just conquer—they would massacre.

They wouldn't leave anyone alive for her to rule over.

So, for now?

Just play along.

Smile. Nod. Keep acting like the all-knowing, all-powerful, terrifying Witch of Envy.

And when the time came?

She'd figure out what to do next.

Subaru was only half-listening to Sirius go on another deranged rant about love, pain, passion, and other things she absolutely did not care about.

She had gotten good at this—nodding along, keeping her face unreadable, pretending she was deeply amused by all the insanity around her while actually mentally checking out.

But then, something strange happened.

A rush of words slammed into her head, uninvited, unmistakable.

"Tella-chan! It's party time~!"

The voice was high-pitched, girly, and disturbingly cheerful.

Subaru froze.

Sirius was still in front of her—still talking, still rambling—

But her lips weren't moving.

Her chains weren't rattling.

Everything around her was completely still.

Time had stopped.

And somehow… Subaru knew it was her doing.

She took a slow breath, pushing back the knot of tension forming in her chest.

This was fine.

Everything was fine.

Finally, for the first time in forever, she let herself drop the act.

She stood, stretching her limbs, rolling her shoulders, twisting her neck until it popped.

God, that felt good.

Another voice, lower, rougher, male, broke through the silence.

"You comin' or not?"

Frowning, Subaru focused her will.

And instantly, she was somewhere else. This story is hosted at g.com.

A vast, endless greenland.

She stood in lush, rolling fields, grass stretching toward the horizon, the sky bright and clear for the first time since she had ended up in this nightmare.

Sunlight.

Actual sunlight.

It felt warm, real, almost unbelievable—like stepping into a completely different world.

Of course, the black mist still surrounded her.

She could feel it coiling around her, refusing to let her go, marking her even here, in this beautiful place.

But for now, she ignored it.

Ahead, in the middle of the field, was a large table set under an umbrella, looking like something pulled straight out of an afternoon tea party.

Several figures were gathered around it.

People. Women.

Subaru didn't recognize them.

But the way they were looking at her—the way they were waiting—made it clear that they recognized her.

Fine.

She was used to this.

Keeping her face unreadable, she mist-stepped toward them.

She had to play along.

She landed gracefully, the mist settling beneath her feet.

The moment she arrived, a tan-skinned, green-haired girl clapped her hands together, beaming.

"It's Tella-chan!"

Subaru met their gazes, scanning the group.

Six women.

Each one strikingly different.

Each one watching her carefully.

Subaru inhaled slowly, then tilted her head, offering a knowing smile.

"Everyone," she said smoothly, pretending she totally knew who they were.

The woman lying in the grass spoke first, her tone amused, lazy, but sharp.

"Don't act, y'know. We know who you are, mhm."

Subaru froze.

Her stomach dropped.

What?!

The woman with long, flowing white hair and dark, hollow eyes leaned forward, resting her chin on her hand.

"You are Natsuki Subaru—now Satella."

The air turned cold.

Subaru's mind raced.

Who the hell were these people? And more importantly—

How did they know?
