He closed his eyes, turning his awareness inward. Where a normal cultivator’s dantian was a luminous pond of flowing Qi, Ren’s core was a dense, microscopic singularity—a heavy, cold weight forged from the residue of the fallen Godhead shard. Nine spirit veins, previously blocked and dead, now pulsed like veins of black iron beneath his skin.
He raised his right hand, focusing his mind on the density of the air around his fingertips.
Heavy.
With a subtle mental twitch, he increased the local gravitational pull around his palm by a mere fraction. The air compressed with a sharp pop, creating a tiny, vacuum-sealed pocket that instantly crushed a crawling beetle against the stone floor without a sound.
"It doesn't use spiritual energy," Ren whispered to the empty room, his voice raspy. "It stores physical mass. Every impact I take, every ounce of pressure I absorb, feeds the singularity."
The realization was both exhilarating and terrifying. Traditional cultivation relied on gathering ambient Qi from the heavens. Ren’s path—the Dense Realm Art he was unconsciously inventing—required him to endure forces that would crush a normal disciple, and turn them into his own weapon.
A sharp, violent kick rattled the heavy wooden door of his cell.
"Open up, you worthless trash!"
Ren's eyes snapped open. He let the gravity around his hand dissipate, instantly smoothing his expression as he stood up.
The wooden bar lifted with a heavy thud, and the door swung inward. Standing in the doorway was Senior Brother Song Chen, flanked by two burly outer disciples holding iron-tipped staves. Song Chen’s silk robes were immaculate, embroidered with silver thread that caught the candlelight. His face bore the sneer of someone who spent more time bribing elders for elixir pills than doing hard labor.
"Song Chen," Ren said, keeping his voice flat, playing the part of the obedient, cowed servant. "The shift doesn't start for another hour."
Song Chen stepped inside, invading Ren’s personal space with an overbearing wave of Fire-Element Qi that made the air in the tiny cell dry and hot.
"Shift?" Song Chen laughed, a sharp, cruel sound. "Forget the shift, Null-Vein. Word from the upper yards is that Elder Lu is sniffing around for anyone who might have touched the debris from yesterday's storm. And you... you were right in the center of the crater when it happened."
Ren’s heart skipped a beat, but his face remained a mask of dull confusion. "I was knocked unconscious, Senior Brother. Elder Lu already scanned my soul. I'm empty."
"Maybe," Song Chen mused, stepping closer. He reached out, his hand glowing with a dull, orange-red flame as he grabbed the collar of Ren’s ragged linen tunic, bunching the fabric tight. "Or maybe a pathetic dog like you got lucky and found a scrap of divine iron before the enforcers arrived. Hand it over."
"I have nothing," Ren said, holding his ground.
"Liar!"
Song Chen’s face twisted with rage. Without warning, he threw a punch straight at Ren’s chest—a low-tier martial technique, The Blazing Fist, imbued with a concentrated burst of Fire Qi designed to scorch internal organs and break ribs.
In the past, Ren would have been sent flying, coughing up blood, entirely helpless.
This time, time seemed to slow down.
Ren didn't dodge. He didn't raise a defense. He simply braced his feet against the stone floor and let the punch land dead center on his sternum.
BOOM.
A muffled shockwave echoed through the cell. The candle flickered and nearly died.
Song Chen’s fist struck Ren’s chest, but instead of the sickening crunch of breaking bone, the impact met an immovable wall of absolute density. The fiery Qi that should have burned Ren’s lungs was instantly sucked into the dark vortex of his Null Root, swallowed and converted into raw mass.
Song Chen’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock.
His fist bounced off Ren’s chest as if he had punched a mountain of solid iron. The recoil traveled straight up Song Chen’s arm, sending a violent fracture-crack through his wrist bones.
"Aaargh!" Song Chen shrieked, stumbling backward and clutching his mangled, smoking wrist. "What... what kind of body hardening technique is this?! You're a cripple!"
The two guards flanking Song Chen dropped their staves, staring in utter disbelief.
Ren exhaled slowly, a wisp of grey, smoke-like gravity venting from his lips. He took one slow step forward, the floor cracking beneath his boot with a sound like a gunshot. He didn't throw a punch—he simply let the accumulated kinetic energy from Song Chen’s strike roll off his shoulders and pulse outward in a localized wave of heavy gravity.
Thump.
The invisible wave of mass struck Song Chen and his two guards squarely in the chest. All three of them dropped to their knees, gasping for air as if a heavy boulder had been dropped onto their backs.
Ren looked down at Song Chen, his dark, ink-black eyes completely devoid of fear.
"I have no scrap, Senior Brother," Ren said softly, his voice carrying a weight that made the stone walls tremble. "And if you ever kick my door open again, your next punch won't just break your wrist."
Song Chen trembled, sweat pouring down his pale face, utterly paralyzed by the crushing, unnatural gravity pressing down on his spine. He couldn't even speak.
"Get out," Ren whispered.
Song Chen scrambled backward on his hands and knees, scrambling out of the cell like a dog, his guards dragging themselves behind him in absolute terror.
The heavy door swung shut.
Ren stood alone in the dim candlelight. He looked down at his chest, where Song Chen's fist had landed. Not a single thread of his tunic was torn.
The Outer Sect Tournament is in three days, Ren thought, a cold, sharp smile touching the corner of his lips. Let Song Chen bring his Fire Qi. Let Elder Lu bring his enforcers. My path starts here.
