The Sanctum of Judgment sat at the highest peak of the Outer Sector, cold and carved entirely from black slate. High above the central altar hung the Mirror of Truth—a massive, ancient artifact rimmed with braided brass, its surface shimmering like liquid silver.
It was an artifact designed for one purpose: to peel back skin, bone, and soul, exposing hidden cultivation arts, demonic curses, or stolen treasures.
Ren stood in the center of the hall alongside the second- and third-place tournament finalists. Twenty elite enforcers lined the walls, their hands resting on bare blades. On the elevated dais, Elder Lu sat with his arms folded into his wide sleeves, his sharp gaze fixed entirely on Ren. Beside him sat Lin Xiu, her face pale and distant.
"The tournament yields great rewards," Elder Lu’s voice echoed off the black slate, cold and ringing like striking iron. "Inner-sect promotion. Access to the Aether-Scar Rift. But the Azure Cloud Sect harbors no rat-borne secrets. Before your rewards are granted, your foundations must be laid bare."
The second-place finalist stepped forward first. He bowed trembling heads as the Mirror’s silver light swept over him. The glass flashed a clear, brilliant yellow.
"Earth-Root, five spirit veins ignited. Clean," the officiant called out.
The third-place disciple stepped up. The beam turned pale blue.
"Water-Root, four spirit veins. Clean."
Elder Lu gestured with a single finger. "Next."
Ren stepped onto the stone circle directly beneath the suspended mirror. The air grew instantly ice-cold.
If the beam pierces my core while the Godhead Shard is active, they will tear me apart on this floor, Ren thought.
He closed his eyes and sank his consciousness deep into his chest. He couldn't hide the nine ignited spirit veins, nor could he erase the heavy mass inside him. But he could change how it behaved.
Using his Dense Realm Art, Ren began to pull. He dragged every stray thread of kinetic energy, thermal heat, and spatial pressure inward, folding the microscopic singularity in on itself. He locked the Godhead Shard deep inside the densest pocket of his Null Root, wrapping it in a dense, non-reactive shell of suppressed mass.
Void Lock.
His dantian went completely pitch-black—not dead, but so dense that not a single wave of energy could escape its event horizon.
"Begin," Elder Lu barked.
The Mirror of Truth groaned on its brass chains. A beam of piercing, blinding white light erupted from the silver glass, striking Ren squarely in the sternum.
The light slammed into his frame with the force of a flying sledgehammer. Ren’s teeth clicked together as the intrusive scrying energy tried to force its way into his pathways, seeking to read his soul.
The white light passed through his skin, through his dense bones, and struck the black singularity in his core.
Nothing happened.
The Mirror’s light didn't bounce back. It didn't illuminate his spirit root. The scrying energy was simply dragged straight into the dark gravity well of the Void Lock and swallowed whole.
The brass rim of the ancient Mirror began to hum violently. High-pitched cracks vibrated through the frame as the artifact struggled to process a body that returned zero reflection. The liquid silver surface turned from brilliant white to a dull, stagnant grey, flickering like a dying candle.
The enforcers shifted uneasily, drawing their swords half an inch. Lin Xiu’s eyes narrowed, her hand tightening on her sword hilt.
"What is happening?" the officiant stammered, staring up at the trembling artifact. "The Mirror... it cannot find a spirit root!"
"It isn't a spirit root," Elder Lu said, his voice dropping an octave as he rose from his throne. He stepped to the edge of the dais, staring down at Ren like a predator evaluating a trap. "Explain this, boy."
Ren opened his eyes. They were clear, dark, and utterly calm. He let his knees tremble slightly, bowing his head in apparent exhaustion.
"Elder," Ren said, making his voice sound strained and thin. "When I was twelve, the testing orb showed my Null Root was empty. Yesterday, during the falling sky on the ridge, the pressure didn't give me Qi—it crushed my bones into iron. My body doesn't hold spirit energy. It only holds weight."
The Mirror gave one final, harsh ping and settled back into a dull, lifeless grey.
Elder Lu stared at Ren for ten long seconds. The silence in the Sanctum was so absolute that the flickering of the wall torches sounded like roaring fires.
"A mutated Stagnant Iron Body," Elder Lu whispered, a flicker of disappointment crossing his sharp features. "A rare physical anomaly born from surviving spatial pressure. It absorbs kinetic force, but it cannot channel true Heaven-and-Earth laws. A dead end for immortal cultivation."
Elder Lu turned his back, waving a dismissive hand. "The result is clear. No demonic arts, no hidden stolen artifacts. He is simply a stone that learned to stand."
The enforcers relaxed, sheathing their weapons.
"The three of you are promoted to Inner Disciples," Elder Lu announced, though his eyes remained cold as he cast a final glance at Ren's back. "Prepare yourselves. Tomorrow at dawn, the rift to the Aether-Scar opens. Let us see if your 'iron body' survives where the laws of space themselves are broken."
Ren bowed deeply, hiding the cold, sharp smile playing across his lips.
He had passed the Jade Mirror. And tomorrow, inside a realm where gravity and space were shattered, he wouldn't need to hide his true power anymore.
