The next morning…

The mansion was unusually quiet.

Jay didn’t come downstairs for breakfast.Full novel: The Devil’s Contact Wife(jayfer) — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The maids exchanged worried glances.

“Has anyone seen Mrs.

Watson?”

One of them shook her head.

“Her room is still closed.”

Felix frowned.

“That’s strange.

She’s always awake before everyone.”

He walked upstairs and knocked gently.

“Mrs.

Watson?”

No answer.

He knocked again.

“Mrs.

Watson?”

A weak voice came from inside.

“…Come in.”

Felix opened the door.

Jay was curled up under the blanket, her cheeks flushed and her hair messy.

She looked exhausted.

Felix’s smile disappeared.

“Ma’am…

are you alright?”

She tried to sit up.

“I’m fine.”

The moment she stood…

Everything spun.

She stumbled.

Felix quickly caught her before she hit the floor.

“You have a fever!”

A few minutes later…

Keifer walked into the room after hearing the commotion.

He looked at Jay sitting on the bed with a thermometer in her mouth.

The doctor checked her temperature.

“102.4°F.”

“She caught a chill from yesterday’s rain.”

The doctor handed over the prescription.

“She needs medicine, plenty of fluids, and complete rest.”

Keifer’s face darkened.

As soon as the doctor left…

He turned to Jay.

“I told you not to behave like a child.”

Jay blinked sleepily.

“I just wanted to enjoy the rain…”

“You enjoyed it?”

His voice rose.

“Now look at yourself.”

“You danced in the rain for almost an hour!”

“What did you expect?”

Jay pouted.

“I’ve had worse.”

“That’s not the point.”

He folded his arms.

“You have absolutely no sense.”

She looked down.

“…Sorry.”

Felix quietly stepped out, sensing they needed privacy.

Keifer placed the medicine on the bedside table.

“Take it.”

Jay looked at the tablet as though it were poison.

“I don’t like medicine.”

Keifer stared at her.

“…Excuse me?”

“It tastes bitter.”

“So?”

She pulled the blanket over her nose.

“I’ll get better naturally.”

For the first time that day…

Keifer looked completely speechless.

“You are twenty-three years old.”

Jay nodded.

“Yes.”

“And you’re hiding from a tablet?”

“It knows what it did.”

Keifer rubbed his temples.

“Jay.”

“No.”

“Jay.”

She shook her head like a stubborn child.

“No.”

A sigh escaped him.

He picked up the tablet and held out a glass of water.

“Take it.”

She looked away dramatically.

“I suddenly feel healthy.”

“You have a fever.”

“I can survive.”

“You’ll survive faster if you swallow this.”

She folded her arms.

“It’ll make my tongue sad.”

For a second…

The Devil of Manila simply stared at her.

Then…

Almost against his will…

The corner of his mouth twitched.

She looked so serious saying something so ridiculous.

He quickly hid the expression.

“You are impossible.”

“So I’ve been told.”

He sat on the edge of the bed.

“Fine.”

“What?”

“I’ll count to three.”

“If you don’t take it…”

He paused.

“…I’ll feed it to you myself.”

Jay’s eyes widened.

“You wouldn’t.”

“One.”

She gulped.

“Two.”

She quickly grabbed the tablet.

“Okay!

Okay!”

She swallowed it in one go before making the most exaggerated face imaginable.

“Eww…”

She reached for the water and drank nearly the entire glass.

“Bitter!”

Keifer couldn’t help it.

A quiet chuckle escaped him.

Jay looked up in surprise.

“…Did you just laugh?”

He cleared his throat immediately.

“No.”

“You did.”

“I didn’t.”

“You smiled too.”

“I most certainly did not.”

Jay smiled weakly despite her fever.

“There it is again…”

“What?”

“You’re not scary all the time.”

Keifer looked away.

“I have work.”

He stood to leave.

Before he reached the door…

A soft voice stopped him.

“Keifer…”

He glanced back.

She was already lying down again, her eyes half closed.

“…Will you stay until I fall asleep?”

The room fell silent.

He should have refused.

He should have walked away.

Instead…

He returned to the chair beside her bed.

“I’m only staying until you sleep.”

Jay smiled sleepily.

“…Okay.”

A few minutes later…

She unconsciously reached out and lightly held the sleeve of his shirt, as a child might seek comfort.

Keifer looked down at her small hand.

He didn’t move it away.

He simply sat there in silence.

Watching over the woman who somehow made the Devil lose every argument…

one small smile at a time.
