They reached Azure Cloud Sect shortly after midnight.
The return from the Luo ruins had taken several hours.
By the time Chao Lun Hui reached his room, the blank warning scroll had already been sealed inside the main hall.
He should have slept.
Instead, his modern mind spent the night trying to organise four ancient trials, one veiled partner, one vanished village, three Keys, a Wheel of Reincarnation and an enemy whose title was also his job description.
The warning returned whenever he closed his eyes.
『FIND THE THIRD KEY BEFORE THE SEEKER DOES 』
It offered no location, method or useful definition.
Near sunrise, exhaustion finally defeated him.
His door opened with the energy of an explosion.
The wooden panels struck the wall.
Morning air swept through the room.
Luo Yanhe rolled towards the sword beside his bed before his thoughts had fully surfaced.
Luo Yanhe : “Assassin?!”
Gu Zhen stood in the doorway holding a tray of breakfast and looking more dangerous than an actual assassin.
Gu Zhen : “No.”
Luo Yanhe stared at him for several breaths, then collapsed back onto the pillow.
Luo Yanhe : “Oh.”
Gu Zhen entered without invitation.
Personal boundaries remained a concept he had heard discussed but never accepted as law.
Gu Zhen : “What do you mean, ‘oh’?”
Luo Yanhe pulled the blanket higher.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple was disappointed.”
Gu Zhen stopped beside the table, openly wounded.
Gu Zhen : “You thought someone important had arrived?”
Luo Yanhe opened one silver-grey eye.
Luo Yanhe : “Yes.”
The betrayal on Gu Zhen’s face became complete.
Gu Zhen : “I brought food.”
Luo Yanhe looked towards the tray.
Several pieces were missing, including the largest steamed bun.
Luo Yanhe : “You ate part of it.”
Gu Zhen examined the incomplete breakfast as though seeing it for the first time.
Gu Zhen : “Transportation fee.”
In Chao Lun Hui’s old world, a breakfast courier who ate the order would have faced a complaint.
Here, the courier carried a spear and called theft an administrative fee.
Luo Yanhe closed his eye again.
Luo Yanhe : “Leave.”
Gu Zhen sat at the table.
Gu Zhen : “Good news.”
Luo Yanhe became alert, though not hopefully.
Gu Zhen’s good news usually arrived carrying responsibility, danger or both.
Luo Yanhe : “There has never been good news when you begin a sentence like that.”
Gu Zhen selected another pastry.
Gu Zhen : “Master Shen is looking for you.”
Luo Yanhe sat upright immediately.
Luo Yanhe : “Really?”
Gu Zhen slowly pointed at him with the pastry.
Gu Zhen : “See?”
Luo Yanhe’s expression tightened.
Luo Yanhe : “See what?”
Gu Zhen looked delighted with himself.
Gu Zhen : “You moved faster for Master Shen.”
Chao Lun Hui noticed the reaction a moment too late.
Hearing Shen Yan Ting’s name had pulled Luo Yanhe’s body upright before practical thought could ask why his master would send Gu Zhen instead of a reliable messenger.
That question was now less urgent than silencing the witness.
Luo Yanhe reached for the nearest pillow and threw it.
Gu Zhen dodged.
Years of friendship had given him excellent survival instincts without providing common sense.
Gu Zhen : “Violence cannot hide the truth!”
Luo Yanhe grabbed the second pillow.
Luo Yanhe : “It can silence witnesses.”
Gu Zhen fled with the remaining breakfast.
Half an hour later, Luo Yanhe arrived at the training grounds in fresh black robes and a mood sharpened by hunger.
Shen Yan Ting was nowhere in sight.
Inner disciples practised sword forms across the stone platforms while spiritual cranes circled the nearby peaks.
A few conversations quietened when Luo Yanhe passed.
One disciple shifted aside to give him more space than courtesy required.
The reaction no longer surprised Chao Lun Hui.
Improved behaviour had not erased the history attached to Luo Yanhe’s face.
A familiar voice came from behind him.
Mu Qingyu : “Looking for someone?”
Luo Yanhe stopped.
Mu Qingyu stood several steps away, composed and elegant, with the pleasant expression of someone who could identify weakness before breakfast and enjoy it throughout the day.
Luo Yanhe : “Senior Sister.”
Mu Qingyu looked towards the empty platform.
Mu Qingyu : “Master Shen is not here.”
Luo Yanhe glanced around as though this had not already become painfully clear.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple noticed.”
Mu Qingyu studied him.
Mu Qingyu : “Disappointed?”
Luo Yanhe answered too quickly.
Luo Yanhe : “No.”
Her eyebrows lifted.
Mu Qingyu : “Really?”
Luo Yanhe opened his mouth.
No convincing answer arrived.
Gu Zhen appeared from behind a pillar like a spirit summoned by embarrassment.
Gu Zhen : “He is disappointed!”
Luo Yanhe kicked towards him.
Gu Zhen retreated beyond range, still carrying the last stolen bun.
Mu Qingyu folded her arms.
Mu Qingyu : “Interesting.”
Luo Yanhe straightened his sleeves.
Luo Yanhe : “Nothing about this is interesting.”
Her expression disagreed.
Before Gu Zhen could offer further evidence, an Azure Cloud disciple ran towards them from the central mountain.
His robes were disordered and his breathing uneven.
Azure Cloud Disciple : “Senior Brother Luo!”
The humour disappeared.
Luo Yanhe : “What happened?”
Azure Cloud Disciple : “The Sect Master has summoned the elders and Inner Core Disciples to the main hall.
White Crane Sect sent an urgent report.”
Mu Qingyu’s amusement vanished beneath immediate focus.
Gu Zhen swallowed the stolen bun and adjusted the spear across his back.
Sect leaders gathered disciples for disasters, missions and disasters disguised as missions.
After the warning concerning the Third Key, Chao Lun Hui expected all three.
The main hall was crowded when they arrived.
Several elders stood around a broad map spread across the central table.
Sect Master Qing Xu remained at the front beside sealed reports and the blank warning scroll, now contained within three protective barriers.
Shen Yan Ting stood to his right.
Luo Yanhe found him immediately.
Shen Yan Ting’s gaze moved once over Luo Yanhe, taking in his uninjured condition, properly tied robes and empty hands.
It paused at the last detail.
Shen Yan Ting : “You did not eat.”
Luo Yanhe looked towards Gu Zhen.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple was robbed during delivery.”
Gu Zhen : “Transportation fee.”
Shen Yan Ting’s attention returned to Luo Yanhe.
Shen Yan Ting : “Eat after the meeting.”
Luo Yanhe : “Master’s concern is moving.”
Shen Yan Ting : “You become unreasonable when hungry.”
Mu Qingyu looked away, possibly to conceal a smile.
Beside the elders stood a young man Luo Yanhe had never met.
He wore white robes embroidered with pale silver cranes.
He was tall, composed and irritatingly well-rested, with precise posture and spiritual energy controlled so smoothly that nothing escaped beyond the edge of his sleeves.
The stranger noticed Luo Yanhe observing him and inclined his head.
Luo Yanhe returned the gesture.
He was very polite, calm and difficult to read.
Gu Zhen leaned closer and lowered his voice with the subtlety of an exploding formation.
Gu Zhen : “He is handsome.”
Luo Yanhe looked again.
Luo Yanhe : “He is.”
A particular silence gathered behind them.
Luo Yanhe did not turn.
Chao Lun Hui had survived enough dangerous scenarios to understand that some silences were best examined after witnesses had left.
Sect Master Qing Xu addressed the hall.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “This is Pei Wuchen, an Inner Disciple of White Crane Sect.”
Pei Wuchen stepped forward and bowed.
Pei Wuchen : “Pei Wuchen greets the elders and fellow disciples of Azure Cloud Sect.”
His courtesy was flawless.
That made Luo Yanhe more suspicious, not less.
Sect Master Qing Xu gestured towards the northern section of the map.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “On the night the Second Key awakened, White Crane Sect’s detection formation recorded an abnormal resonance beneath the northern spiritual veins.
Their report reached us shortly after our group returned from the Luo ruins.”
Pei Wuchen placed two fingers beside a marked region.
Pei Wuchen : “Our sect maintains formations designed to track changes in dormant spiritual veins.
The disturbance began at the same moment as the awakening reported by Azure Cloud Sect.”
The hall quietened.
Fine silver lines connected Azure Cloud Sect, White Crane Sect and several abandoned sites in the north.
They did not form a complete pattern, but enough remained to suggest that the disturbance had travelled through an older network beneath the land.
Pei Wuchen : “The residue is faint and weakening.
Its quality is cold, restrained and unusually patient.
It resembles the foreign spiritual energy Senior Shen detected upon the blank scroll.”
Shen Yan Ting studied the map.
Shen Yan Ting : “The signature is not identical.”
Pei Wuchen : “No.
The northern resonance is older and more diluted.”
Shen Yan Ting : “But they may share a source.”
Pei Wuchen : “That is White Crane Sect’s assessment as well.”
Professional agreement did not remove the caution between the two sects.
White Crane Sect had shared only the pages necessary to support the mission.
Sect Master Qing Xu rested one hand beside the scroll.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “The matter of the Three Keys will remain restricted.
White Crane Sect has agreed to send Pei Wuchen and two formation specialists.
Azure Cloud Sect will provide the main investigation group.”
One elder’s gaze settled on Luo Yanhe.
Sect Master Qing Xu continued before the concern became an accusation.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “White Crane Sect has also asked whether Luo Yanhe’s presence is necessary.”
A few disciples shifted.
The question was not unreasonable.
The Second Key had awakened through Luo Yanhe’s bloodline, and supernatural recognition did not resemble proof of innocence to those who already feared his cultivation.
Chao Lun Hui felt the unfairness, but other people remembered consequences that he did not.
An elder near the map spoke carefully.
Azure Cloud Elder : “If the northern disturbance is connected to the Luo inheritance, excluding him may prevent us from following the trail.
Including him may also allow the trail to react more strongly.”
Another elder looked towards Shen Yan Ting.
Azure Cloud Elder : “His cultivation remains under observation.”
Shen Yan Ting’s expression did not change.
Shen Yan Ting : “His circulation has remained stable since the trials.
I will supervise him personally.”
The statement protected Luo Yanhe without pretending complete trust.
Sect Master Qing Xu nodded.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “Luo Yanhe will join under Shen Yan Ting’s direct supervision.
He will not separate from the group or activate an unknown formation without permission.”
Luo Yanhe : “Sect Master has removed all of this disciple’s favourite strategies.”
Gu Zhen whispered beside him.
Gu Zhen : “You still have complaining.”
Luo Yanhe : “A final defence.”
A faint pulse touched his waist.
The Luo Clan jade had warmed beneath his robes.
Luo Yanhe’s body turned slightly towards the northern mark before Chao Lun Hui understood the movement.
The sensation was weaker than the guidance to the ruins but carried the same insistence.
Shen Yan Ting noticed.
Shen Yan Ting : “The jade?”
Luo Yanhe placed a hand over it.
Luo Yanhe : “It reacted to the northern region.”
The hall became more attentive.
Pei Wuchen watched Luo Yanhe without moving closer.
Pei Wuchen : “Does it provide a direction?”
Luo Yanhe : “Only a preference.”
Gu Zhen : “A judgemental compass.”
Luo Yanhe : “It belongs to the Luo family.
Judgement appears hereditary.”
No ancient message followed.
The jade offered warmth and nothing else.
Chao Lun Hui did not know whether the pull belonged to Luo Yanhe’s bloodline, the inheritance or a danger already waiting for him.
Avoiding the expedition would not separate him from any of them.
The Seeker would see the Luo heir regardless of which name Chao Lun Hui used inside his own thoughts.
Luo Yanhe : “When do we leave?”
The question came faster than he intended.
Sect Master Qing Xu : “At first light tomorrow.”
Gu Zhen turned towards him with grave sympathy.
Gu Zhen : “You hate mornings.”
Luo Yanhe kept his gaze on the map.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple hates danger scheduled before breakfast.”
Shen Yan Ting answered from beside the table.
Shen Yan Ting : “Wake earlier.”
Luo Yanhe closed his eyes briefly.
Luo Yanhe : “Master continues solving problems by creating worse ones.”
A quiet sound escaped Mu Qingyu.
Pei Wuchen lowered his gaze, but the corner of his mouth had moved.
The meeting continued through route assignments.
Mu Qingyu would handle formation disruption and field coordination.
Gu Zhen joined the forward guard, which pleased him until Sect Master Qing Xu banned abandoning position for food stalls.
Gu Zhen : “That restriction is unnecessarily specific.”
Sect Master Qing Xu : “It was written for you.”
When the meeting ended, the elders remained to decide how much information could safely pass between the sects.
In the courtyard, one White Crane disciple bowed respectfully while keeping enough distance to draw a sword.
Courtesy and caution could occupy the same body.
Luo Yanhe had nearly reached the steps when Pei Wuchen approached.
Pei Wuchen : “Senior Brother Luo.”
Luo Yanhe turned.
Luo Yanhe : “Junior Brother Pei.”
Pei Wuchen inclined his head.
Pei Wuchen : “I heard about the inheritance trials.”
Luo Yanhe remembered twelve stone warriors, spiritual criticism, Shen Yan Ting’s wedding, a veiled partner who resembled Luo Yanhe, several peaceful village days and one chicken with violent opinions.
His expression became solemn.
Luo Yanhe : “Oh.”
Pei Wuchen hesitated.
Pei Wuchen : “My condolences.”
Luo Yanhe accepted the words with complete seriousness.
Luo Yanhe : “Thank you.”
Pei Wuchen blinked.
Pei Wuchen : “Condolences?”
Luo Yanhe folded his arms.
Luo Yanhe : “It was traumatic.”
For a moment, Pei Wuchen appeared uncertain whether Luo Yanhe was mocking him.
Then his composure broke.
He laughed once, genuinely, before recovering.
Luo Yanhe brightened.
Pei Wuchen : “Senior Brother Luo differs from the reports.”
The warmth in Luo Yanhe’s expression cooled slightly.
Luo Yanhe : “What reports?”
Pei Wuchen considered his answer.
Pei Wuchen : “That you are difficult, unpredictable when provoked and involved in forbidden cultivation.”
Chao Lun Hui did not remember earning that reputation.
That did not make the people who remembered it dishonest.
Luo Yanhe : “The first report may be accurate.”
Gu Zhen appeared beside them without invitation.
Gu Zhen : “Very accurate.”
Luo Yanhe looked at him.
Luo Yanhe : “Nobody asked you.”
Gu Zhen : “Truth does not wait for invitations.”
Luo Yanhe stared.
That sentence was far too intelligent for Gu Zhen and therefore especially offensive.
Pei Wuchen’s amusement returned, though his gaze remained observant.
Pei Wuchen : “Reports are useful.
They are not always complete.”
Luo Yanhe : “Junior Brother Pei intends to investigate personally?”
Pei Wuchen : “I intend to observe the expedition.”
The answer was courteous and honest.
He offered neither trust nor hostility.
Luo Yanhe found that preferable to false reassurance.
Luo Yanhe : “Then this disciple hopes to disappoint at least half the rumours.”
Gu Zhen : “Keep ‘difficult’.
It suits you.”
Luo Yanhe : “Guard your provisions tonight.”
Gu Zhen’s expression became cautious.
Several steps away, Shen Yan Ting had stopped beside the hall entrance.
His gaze rested briefly on Pei Wuchen, then moved to Luo Yanhe.
Shen Yan Ting : “Luo Yanhe.”
Luo Yanhe turned immediately.
Shen Yan Ting : “Your medicine and talismans must be checked before departure.”
Luo Yanhe : “Now?”
Shen Yan Ting : “Before Gu Zhen eats either.”
Gu Zhen : “This disciple has never eaten a talisman.”
Mu Qingyu passed them on the steps.
Mu Qingyu : “Not successfully.”
Pei Wuchen looked between them with restrained interest.
Luo Yanhe fell into step beside Shen Yan Ting.
His master adjusted his pace by the smallest amount, keeping them level as they crossed the courtyard.
Luo Yanhe : “Master interrupted an important diplomatic conversation.”
Shen Yan Ting : “You were discussing rumours.”
Luo Yanhe : “Diplomatically.”
Shen Yan Ting : “You threatened his provisions.”
Luo Yanhe : “Cultural exchange.”
Shen Yan Ting’s reply took a moment longer than usual.
Shen Yan Ting : “Pack.”
Behind them, Pei Wuchen watched the exchange.
The reports about their master-disciple relationship were clearly incomplete.
That evening, medicine, maps, spirit stones and emergency talismans were sorted beneath lantern light.
Gu Zhen checked his spear, then attempted to check Luo Yanhe’s food.
Luo Yanhe struck his hand away.
Gu Zhen : “I was testing security.”
Luo Yanhe : “Security succeeded.”
Gu Zhen : “The test requires repetition.”
Luo Yanhe moved the provisions into a sealed spatial pouch and tied it inside his outer robe.
Gu Zhen looked genuinely offended.
The preparation hall should have emptied after the supplies were distributed.
Instead, two White Crane disciples arrived carrying sealed route records.
Both bowed correctly to Luo Yanhe, although one kept a hand close to the sword at his waist.
Chao Lun Hui noticed.
Luo Yanhe’s reputation had travelled farther than he had, and several weeks of improved behaviour could not force strangers to forget what they had heard.Pei Wuchen entered behind them with a folded map.
Pei Wuchen : “Senior Brother Luo, Senior Shen.
White Crane Sect has completed a second comparison of the northern resonance.”
Gu Zhen leaned towards the map.
Gu Zhen : “Does it show food stalls?”
Pei Wuchen regarded him calmly.
Pei Wuchen : “It shows abandoned spiritual veins.”
Gu Zhen : “So the answer is uncertain.”
Mu Qingyu took the map before he could improve the conversation.
Mu Qingyu : “The outer road divides here.
The western route is shorter, but the ground is unstable.
The eastern route is safer and adds half a day.”
Luo Yanhe : “Half a day?”
Mu Qingyu : “Yes.”
Luo Yanhe looked towards Shen Yan Ting.
Luo Yanhe : “Master, this disciple believes the shorter route deserves consideration.”
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
Luo Yanhe : “Master rejected it before hearing the argument.”
Shen Yan Ting : “You were going to argue that danger is acceptable if it ends before dinner.”
Luo Yanhe paused.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple would have phrased it more professionally.”
Pei Wuchen lowered his gaze to hide a smile.
Shen Yan Ting examined the western route.
Shen Yan Ting : “Collapsed spiritual channels may lie beneath the damaged ground.
We take the eastern path.”
Gu Zhen : “That route passes three villages.”
Luo Yanhe looked at him.
Luo Yanhe : “You found the food stalls.”
Gu Zhen : “A spear cultivator must understand terrain.”
Mu Qingyu : “Your understanding of terrain appears edible.”
While they argued, Shen Yan Ting placed three medicine bottles beside Luo Yanhe’s spatial pouch.
Shen Yan Ting : “Carry these separately.”
Luo Yanhe : “Why?”
Shen Yan Ting : “If the pouch is damaged, you will still have medicine.”
The bottles bore Shen Yan Ting’s precise handwriting.
The practical care felt familiar enough that Chao Lun Hui chose not to examine it in a room full of observers.
Pei Wuchen’s gaze moved from the medicine to Shen Yan Ting.
Pei Wuchen : “Senior Shen has prepared thoroughly.”
Luo Yanhe : “Master considers disaster a personal appointment.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Disaster frequently arrives near you.”
Gu Zhen nodded.
Gu Zhen : “That is true.”
Luo Yanhe : “Nobody invited supporting testimony.”
Gu Zhen : “Truth does not wait for invitations.”
Luo Yanhe narrowed his eyes.
Luo Yanhe : “You have used that sentence twice today.
Return it before people assume you are wise.”
One White Crane disciple failed to hide a laugh.
The other looked surprised, as though Luo Yanhe had violated a darker rumour by being ridiculous instead of threatening.
Rumours would not disappear because one stranger laughed.
Still, Chao Lun Hui recognised the first small crack in a wall he had inherited.
Mu Qingyu rolled the map closed.
Mu Qingyu : “Everyone should rest.
We leave before sunrise.”
Luo Yanhe : “The sect has developed an unhealthy loyalty to mornings.”
Pei Wuchen : “White Crane Sect usually begins training at dawn.”
Gu Zhen pointed at him.
Gu Zhen : “Suspicious.”
Pei Wuchen : “Because I wake early?”
Gu Zhen : “Only suspicious people enjoy mornings.”
Pei Wuchen considered the accusation.
Pei Wuchen : “Then I will try to appear tired tomorrow.”
Luo Yanhe looked pleased.
Luo Yanhe : “Junior Brother Pei learns quickly.”
Behind him, Shen Yan Ting closed the medicine case with slightly more force than necessary.
Shen Yan Ting : “Luo Yanhe.”
Luo Yanhe turned.
Shen Yan Ting : “Sleep.”
Luo Yanhe : “Master has become very commanding since losing the disciple role.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Go.”
Luo Yanhe collected his supplies.
Gu Zhen followed, still watching the sealed food pouch with criminal concentration.
Luo Yanhe : “Touch it and this disciple will report you to the Sect Master.”
Gu Zhen : “For what?”
Luo Yanhe : “Attempted transportation.”
Gu Zhen looked deeply offended.
Far beyond Azure Cloud Sect, beneath a forgotten mountain, an ancient hall remained untouched by the evening wind.
A man wearing purple robe stood before a ruined altar.
Dim spiritual lines floated above its surface, connecting Azure Cloud Sect, White Crane Sect and the abandoned veins of the north.
The disturbance recorded by White Crane Sect pulsed weakly within the map.
A shadowed figure knelt behind him.
Shadowed Seeker : “Both sects will leave at dawn.
The Luo heir is among them.”
Mo Ruoyan’s crimson gaze remained on the northern line.
Shadowed Seeker : “Shall we close the route?”
Mo Ruoyan : “No.”
The answer silenced the hall.
Shadowed Seeker : “If he reaches the inner network, he may discover that the trail was prepared.”
Mo Ruoyan placed two fingers against the altar.
The northern line brightened, then faded beneath his touch.
Mo Ruoyan : “The trail is useless without Luo blood.”
The shadow lowered its head but did not withdraw.
Mo Ruoyan : “The old inheritance will reject force.
It will not reveal the path to us, regardless of how many formations we break.”
Shadowed Seeker : “Then the heir is the key.”
Mo Ruoyan : “He is the hand that opens the door.”
His voice held no triumph.
Only patience.
Mo Ruoyan : “Do not attack him.
Do not frighten him away from the northern veins.
Let Azure Cloud Sect believe it is pursuing us.”
The floating map shifted.
A thin golden route extended beneath the northern mountains, visible for one breath before vanishing into darkness.
Mo Ruoyan watched the place where it had disappeared.
Mo Ruoyan : “When Luo Yanhe reaches the sealed network, it will recognise its heir.”
The shadow bowed.
Mo Ruoyan : “Then the path towards the Third Key will reveal itself.”
The altar dimmed, leaving only the northern vein pulsing beneath Mo Ruoyan’s fingertips.
