Chao Lun Hui reached the western training steps before dawn and discovered that Shen Yan Ting was already waiting for him.
Of course he was.
The Immortal Master stood beneath an ancient pine tree while pale mist drifted across the stone path.
His white outer robe remained untouched by the damp air, its golden embroidery catching what little light had begun to gather along the horizon.
His long black hair rested neatly beneath the golden-red crown, and his pure golden eyes regarded the mountain with the calm patience of someone who had never lost an argument with sleep.
Shen Yan Ting was only ten years older than Luo Yanhe, yet he possessed the authority of a man who could convince an entire sect that waking before sunrise was a moral virtue.
Chao Lun Hui suspected cultivation had damaged everyone’s sense of time.
Luo Yanhe : “Master.”
Shen Yan Ting turned his gaze towards him.
His expression revealed neither surprise nor approval, though Chao Lun Hui thought arriving on time deserved at least a ceremonial acknowledgement.
Shen Yan Ting : “Again.”
Chao Lun Hui looked behind himself in case another disciple had appeared and received the instruction.
Nobody stood there.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple has not begun.”
Shen Yan Ting raised one hand towards the path ahead.
The morning mist withdrew, revealing a staircase carved into the mountainside.
The steps climbed through the pine forest until they vanished into the clouds.
There were not hundreds.
There were three thousand.
Spiritual characters glowed beneath each stone surface, while a broad formation circle covered the entire mountainside.
The pressure sleeping within it was dense enough that Chao Lun Hui could feel it from the bottom step.
His modern life had taught him that rehabilitation usually involved rest, controlled movement and a medical professional who did not look personally offended by comfort.
Azure Cloud Sect had apparently developed a more ambitious philosophy.
Luo Yanhe : “Master.”
Shen Yan Ting waited.
Luo Yanhe : “May this disciple ask a question before his recovery becomes a memorial ceremony?”
The two disciples arranging practice weapons near the lower platform stopped moving.
One glanced towards Luo Yanhe, then immediately looked away when their eyes nearly met.
Shen Yan Ting did not spare them any attention.
Shen Yan Ting : “Ask.”
Luo Yanhe folded his hands with exemplary respect.
His posture suggested obedience.
His dark silver-grey eyes did not.
Luo Yanhe : “Why does recovery training require climbing three thousand spiritual stone steps beneath a mountain-suppressing formation?”
The younger disciple near the weapons lowered his head.
His shoulders moved once, though whether from fear or restrained laughter remained unclear.
Shen Yan Ting studied Luo Yanhe’s breathing before answering.
Shen Yan Ting : “You need endurance.”
Luo Yanhe looked towards the staircase again.
Three thousand steps remained three thousand, regardless of how elegantly his master pronounced endurance.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple’s spiritual foundation was damaged three days ago.”
Shen Yan Ting’s gaze moved to the centre of Luo Yanhe’s chest, where the fractured meridians still carried a faint ache.
Shen Yan Ting : “I know.”
Luo Yanhe waited for an explanation to follow.
It did not.
Luo Yanhe : “Master’s knowledge has not improved the situation.”
A trace of movement passed through Shen Yan Ting’s golden eyes.
His lashes framed them with unfair precision, neither heavy nor fine, making it difficult to determine whether he was amused or preparing to increase the formation pressure.
Luo Yanhe had begun to suspect those possibilities were related.
Shen Yan Ting : “The formation is controlled.”
Luo Yanhe examined the glowing characters that had once been described in the novel as strong enough to force elite cultivators to their knees.
Luo Yanhe : “Controlled by whom?”
Shen Yan Ting looked at him.
That answered the question and created several new concerns.
Luo Yanhe : “Master, is this disciple being prepared for an immortal war?”
Shen Yan Ting responded without hesitation.
Shen Yan Ting : “Because you will eventually face one.”
The humour faded from Chao Lun Hui’s thoughts.
That answer did not fit neatly into the story he remembered.
The original novel contained wars, powerful enemies and enough destruction to keep several generations of storytellers employed, but Shen Yan Ting had never warned Luo Yanhe this early.
Perhaps the author had omitted the conversation.
Perhaps the timeline had already shifted.
Perhaps Shen Yan Ting knew something the published story had never understood.
Chao Lun Hui searched the calm face before him and found no invitation to ask.
Shen Yan Ting : “Begin.”
Luo Yanhe turned towards the staircase with the solemnity of a man approaching a hostile government office.
Luo Yanhe : “Yes, Master.”
His first foot touched the lowest step.
The mountain descended upon him.
Pressure struck his shoulders and travelled through his spine, dense enough to drive the air from his lungs.
The spiritual formation awakened across the slope, each glowing character feeding weight into the next.
His knees bent.
Before Chao Lun Hui could decide how to respond, Luo Yanhe’s body corrected itself.
His right foot turned at a precise angle.
His hips shifted beneath his centre of balance.
Breath entered through the nose, paused beneath the ribs and travelled downwards as spiritual energy folded protectively around the damaged meridians.
The movement happened with quiet efficiency.
Chao Lun Hui had not instructed any part of it.
He climbed another step.
Then another.
His body adjusted to the pressure before it increased, distributing the force through muscle, bone and spiritual channels as though it recognised the formation’s rhythm.
Relief rose first.
Whatever Luo Yanhe had learnt before the forbidden technique remained useful.
Then came discomfort.
Chao Lun Hui was using another man’s training without remembering the pain required to earn it.
On the twelfth step, he attempted to understand the movement.
The moment he consciously shifted his weight, everything went wrong.
His breathing broke rhythm.
Spiritual energy pressed against a damaged meridian, and his left foot landed too near the edge of the stone.
His broad frame tilted towards the mountainside.
He recovered before falling, though the correction lacked the dignity he would have preferred.
Behind him, one of the disciples made a sound that could have been a cough.
Luo Yanhe straightened and continued climbing as though he had intended to test the edge.
Shen Yan Ting : “Stop interfering.”
Luo Yanhe paused on the next step and looked back.
Luo Yanhe : “With what?”
Shen Yan Ting stood at the base of the staircase, white robes unmoved by the formation that currently seemed determined to introduce Luo Yanhe’s face to the stone.
Shen Yan Ting : “Your balance.”
Luo Yanhe glanced down at his feet.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple assumed balance required participation.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Your body performed correctly until you began thinking.”
The disciple beside the weapons lowered his face completely.
His shoulders were no longer trustworthy.
Chao Lun Hui felt personally insulted.
His own consciousness had somehow become the least qualified person involved in operating Luo Yanhe’s body.
Luo Yanhe : “Master is saying this disciple climbs better without thought?”
Shen Yan Ting adjusted one finger.
The pressure increased.
Luo Yanhe’s shoulders dropped beneath the added weight.
Shen Yan Ting : “You still have enough breath to argue.”
Luo Yanhe resumed climbing before his master concluded that breathing itself indicated insufficient difficulty.
He allowed the body to move without examining each step.
The difference was immediate.
His feet found stable positions.
His breathing settled.
Spiritual energy curved away from the injured pathways and strengthened the muscles carrying him upwards.
Chao Lun Hui remained present, but he stopped forcing the process.
For thirty steps, everything worked.
On the thirty-first, he became curious again.
His heel slipped.
Luo Yanhe caught the stone railing before his dignity completed the fall.
Luo Yanhe : “These steps reproduce when nobody is looking.”
Shen Yan Ting began walking behind him.
The formation pressed against the white-robed figure and parted around him with considerably more respect.
Shen Yan Ting : “There are three thousand.”
Luo Yanhe pulled himself upright.
Luo Yanhe : “That was not a denial.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Continue.”
Luo Yanhe continued.
The physical strain grew steadily.
His muscles could bear the pressure, but the damaged spiritual foundation tired faster than the body surrounding it.
Heat gathered along his back, and each breath became harder to control.
Shen Yan Ting remained close enough to intervene, though never close enough to make the training easier.
He asked questions when Luo’s concentration began to weaken.
Which meridian hurt first?
Where did the pressure gather?
Why had Luo shifted his foot before the formation changed?
Chao Lun Hui answered what he could and avoided inventing what he could not.
By the hundredth step, he understood what Shen Yan Ting was doing.
The training was not only recovery.
It was an examination conducted through exhaustion.
Shen Yan Ting : “Luo Yanhe.”
The name reached his body before his mind.
Luo stopped and turned immediately, breath heavy but posture correct.
Only afterwards did Chao Lun Hui realise that he had answered without the familiar internal delay.
Shen Yan Ting noticed that as well.
Shen Yan Ting : “What are you thinking?”
Chao Lun Hui considered several answers.
None were safe.
He was thinking that Luo Yanhe’s body knew this formation.
He was thinking that his own attempts to help had nearly thrown them both down a mountain.
He was thinking that Shen Yan Ting was too observant for a man whose face already occupied an unreasonable share of Heaven’s attention.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple was thinking about the training.”
Shen Yan Ting remained silent long enough to classify the answer properly.
Shen Yan Ting : “You are calculating.”
Luo Yanhe rested one hand against the stone railing.
Luo Yanhe : “Is calculation a bad habit?”
Shen Yan Ting ascended one step and stopped below him.
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
The spiritual characters around them brightened, casting gold across his calm features.
Shen Yan Ting : “Calculation without understanding creates arrogance.”
The words landed more cleanly than any accusation.
Chao Lun Hui had treated his knowledge of the novel as an advantage.
He knew future conflicts, hidden treasures and the broad direction of Luo Yanhe’s downfall.
Yet he did not know why Luo Yanhe had entered the forbidden chamber.
He did not know what Shen Yan Ting feared.
He did not even understand how to place his own foot beneath a formation without allowing the body to correct him.
The novel had shown outcomes and called them truth.
Living here required everything written between them.
Luo Yanhe : “Disciple understands.”
Shen Yan Ting watched him with the same patience he had shown during the interrogation.
Shen Yan Ting : “Do you?”
Luo Yanhe met his golden gaze.
Luo Yanhe : “Enough to understand that pretending certainty would prove Master’s point.”
A near-smile touched Shen Yan Ting’s expression and disappeared before Luo could formally accuse him of possessing one.
The mountain exploded.
A violent impact travelled through the western peak.
Stone dust fell from the staircase, birds tore out of the forest canopy and the spiritual characters beneath Luo’s feet flickered.
The mountain-suppressing formation released him at once.
Luo Yanhe caught the railing as the pressure vanished.
Luo Yanhe : “That was not part of the training, was it?”
Shen Yan Ting had already turned towards the sect’s outer barrier.
The warmth had left his gaze, though his eyes remained pure gold.
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
A second shock passed through the mountain.
Far beyond the forest, the protective barrier gave a fractured metallic resonance.
Someone had not merely struck it.
Someone had crossed it.
Shen Yan Ting moved towards the edge of the training platform.
Shen Yan Ting : “Someone breached the mountain barrier.”
The timing was wrong.
Chao Lun Hui remembered no attack occurring this early in the story.
Whatever waited below belonged to a road the novel had never drawn.
Shen Yan Ting : “Stay here.”
Luo Yanhe’s body stepped forwards before Chao Lun Hui could assess the command.
Luo Yanhe : “No.”
Shen Yan Ting stopped and turned.
His expression made Chao Lun Hui reconsider both the answer and his remaining lifespan.
Shen Yan Ting : “Repeat that.”
Luo Yanhe adjusted his explanation with professional speed.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple means that observation is an important part of training.”
Shen Yan Ting looked towards the broken barrier, then back at him.
Shen Yan Ting : “You wish to observe an unknown enemy attacking the sect?”
Luo Yanhe drew himself upright.
Luo Yanhe : “From a respectful distance.”
Shen Yan Ting’s silence suggested that the distance under consideration might soon extend to another mountain.
The humour left Luo Yanhe’s face.
Luo Yanhe : “If I cannot understand the danger approaching this sect, how can I protect anything in the future?”
Wind moved through the pines as the barrier groaned again.
Shen Yan Ting studied him, measuring more than the answer.
Then he turned towards the descending path.
Shen Yan Ting : “Stay behind me.”
Permission.
Luo Yanhe followed at once.
They descended the mountain together, Shen Yan Ting moving through the mist in white and gold while Luo Yanhe’s body matched his pace before Chao Lun Hui understood how.
Neither of them yet knew that the intruder below had not entered Azure Cloud Sect in search of its Immortal Master.
The intruder was searching for Luo Yanhe.
