Luo Yanhe had reached an unfortunate conclusion: his master was terrifying for a reason no cultivation manual had bothered to mention.
Shen Yan Ting could split mountains, silence entire sects and recognise a lie before the speaker finished arranging it.
None of those abilities troubled Luo Yanhe as much as the discovery that his master was impossible to argue with.
Shen Yan Ting : “Again.”
Luo Yanhe stared at the wooden sword in his hand.
He looked across the mountain valley, then returned his attention to Shen Yan Ting.
Luo Yanhe : “Master.”
Shen Yan Ting stood beneath the shade of a pine tree, his white robes edged with red and intricate gold.
His expression remained calm.
Shen Yan Ting : “Yes?”
Luo Yanhe lifted the wooden sword as evidence in a trial where the accused had already appointed himself judge.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple believes there has been a misunderstanding.”
Shen Yan Ting : “What misunderstanding?”
Luo Yanhe : “Master instructed this disciple to practise sword intent.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Correct.”
Luo Yanhe glanced at the wooden sword.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple has been standing here for three hours.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Correct.”
Luo Yanhe : “During those three hours, Master has provided one instruction.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Correct.”
Luo Yanhe studied him with growing concern.
Luo Yanhe : “Master’s teaching method appears to consist entirely of silence and disappointment.”
A nearby inner disciple carrying medicinal herbs turned away too late.
A laugh escaped before he could smother it.
Shen Yan Ting looked towards him.
The disciple became solemn with the speed of a man who had just remembered several unfinished responsibilities.
Azure Cloud Inner Disciple : “Apologies, Elder Shen.”
Luo Yanhe watched the disciple hurry away, then looked back at his master.
Luo Yanhe : “Even the other disciples are afraid of laughing.”
Shen Yan Ting : “They understand discipline.”
Luo Yanhe : “Or they fear developing wrinkles from stress.”
The remaining disciples lowered their heads.
Luo Yanhe could not tell whether they were hiding laughter or avoiding his gaze.
His damaged reputation complicated even simple reactions.
Some disciples found him amusing.
Others remembered the former Luo Yanhe’s temper and suspected that laughing within his hearing might shorten their cultivation careers.
Shen Yan Ting regarded him for several moments.
Shen Yan Ting : “You talk too much.”
Luo Yanhe smiled.
Luo Yanhe : “Disciple has been told that before.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Many times?”
Luo Yanhe : “More often than Master has ordered me to repeat this training.”
He reconsidered.
Luo Yanhe : “Which is already an unreasonable number.”
The mountain breeze moved through Shen Yan Ting’s long black hair.
His pure golden eyes showed no sympathy.
Shen Yan Ting : “Continue.”
Luo Yanhe sighed with enough dignity to suggest that Heaven itself had wronged him.
Luo Yanhe : “This disciple wonders whether Master enjoys watching disciples suffer.”
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
Luo Yanhe raised the wooden sword again.
Luo Yanhe : “Really?”
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
He allowed Luo Yanhe one hopeful breath.
Shen Yan Ting : “I enjoy watching you complain.”
Luo Yanhe stopped.
Shen Yan Ting had made a joke.
It was dry, almost invisible and delivered with the seriousness of a cultivation judgement, but it was unquestionably a joke.
This discovery felt more dangerous than the training.
The Shen Yan Ting described in the original novel had been one of its rotating main characters and the master named in its title.
His chapters had presented him as distant, controlled and nearly impossible to understand.
The living man was still controlled.
He was also apparently capable of irritating his disciple for personal entertainment.
Chao Lun Hui had not prepared for that interpretation.
He continued practising.
Each attempt began with conscious calculation and ended with his body correcting him.
His wrist adjusted before he decided the angle.
His feet found the proper distance.
Spiritual energy travelled around his damaged meridians as naturally as water choosing the lowest path.
Whenever Chao Lun Hui tried to control every detail, the sword became clumsy.
Whenever he stopped interfering, Luo Yanhe’s body moved as though it had practised the form for years.
Relief and unease had become regular training partners.
Shen Yan Ting noticed when his spiritual foundation strained.
Without comment, he reduced the pressure around the valley by a fraction.
He also noticed when Luo Yanhe attempted to conceal his exhaustion and increased the exercise immediately.
The man had an unusual interpretation of care.
Luo Yanhe : “Master.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Hm?”
Luo Yanhe lowered the wooden sword.
Luo Yanhe : “Have we met before?”
The question left him before caution could retrieve it.
Shen Yan Ting’s hand paused against the hilt of his sword.
The movement lasted less than a breath, but Luo Yanhe saw it.
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
The answer arrived quickly.
Luo Yanhe : “Master answered very fast.”
Shen Yan Ting : “The answer is simple.”
Luo Yanhe : “Simple answers usually survive a moment of consideration.”
Shen Yan Ting turned his golden gaze upon him.
Shen Yan Ting : “Luo Yanhe.”
Luo Yanhe responded before Chao Lun Hui consciously registered the name.
Luo Yanhe : “Yes, Master?”
The speed of his own answer unsettled him more than Shen Yan Ting’s refusal.
Shen Yan Ting : “You become more troublesome each day.”
Luo Yanhe smiled.
Luo Yanhe : “Thank you for the compliment.”
Shen Yan Ting : “It was not a compliment.”
Luo Yanhe : “It sounded like one.”
Shen Yan Ting : “It did not.”
Luo Yanhe : “Master may deny it, but this disciple has already accepted it.”
Shen Yan Ting considered him.
Luo Yanhe almost believed he had won.
Shen Yan Ting : “Five more hours.”
His victory died before it could be celebrated.
Luo Yanhe : “Master.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Yes?”
Luo Yanhe : “Was that revenge?”
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
Luo Yanhe : “Really?”
Shen Yan Ting : “No.”
A quiet pause followed.
Shen Yan Ting : “It was discipline.”
Luo Yanhe looked towards the sky.
The heavens remained beautiful, indifferent and entirely unhelpful.
He continued practising.
That evening, before his additional five hours could become six through administrative creativity, a disciple arrived with a summons from the Hall of Records.
The elders Investigating the barrier breach had requested Luo Yanhe’s presence.
The Hall of Records contained four elders, six open registers, three spiritual instruments and an atmosphere normally reserved for funerals or unpaid debts.
Shen Yan Ting accompanied him.
That alone drew several disapproving looks.
Luo Yanhe stood before the central table while an elder placed his sect identity jade upon a formation plate.
The dark jade bore his name, cultivation rank and spiritual imprint.
The formation activated.
Golden characters rose above it.
Identity confirmed: Luo Yanhe.
The elder frowned.
He reset the formation.
The same result appeared.
Identity confirmed: Luo Yanhe.
Luo Yanhe : “Elder, should this disciple introduce himself to the jade more formally?”
The elder ignored him and activated the formation a third time.
Identity confirmed: Luo Yanhe.
Luo Yanhe : “It appears confident.”
Azure Cloud Elder : “That is the problem.”
The humour retreated.
A second elder opened the record created after the forbidden-technique incident.
Azure Cloud Elder : “Your spiritual foundation suffered severe damage.
Your cultivation nearly collapsed, and your consciousness disappeared long enough for the monitoring formation to record complete failure.”
Luo Yanhe : “Complete failure sounds discouraging.”
Azure Cloud Elder : “You should not have awakened.”
Luo Yanhe looked at Shen Yan Ting.
His master remained beside him, calm but attentive.
Luo Yanhe : “That explanation is even less comforting when delivered in person.”
The elder placed two fingers against Luo Yanhe’s wrist.
Spiritual energy entered his meridians, examining his foundation and soul signature.
Luo Yanhe’s body accepted the intrusion without resistance.
His spiritual channels shifted instinctively, exposing the damaged areas while protecting the core.
Chao Lun Hui had no idea how to perform such cooperation.
The elder withdrew his hand.
Azure Cloud Elder : “His cultivation signature matches every previous sect record.”
Another elder touched the identity jade.
Azure Cloud Elder : “The jade recognises him as its original owner.
There is no rejection, possession residue or foreign spiritual contamination.”
A third elder closed one of the registers.
Azure Cloud Elder : “His consciousness should not have survived.
Yet everything that can identify Luo Yanhe insists that he is Luo Yanhe.”
The room became uncomfortably quiet.
Chao Lun Hui remembered a different room, lit by a computer screen after midnight.
A cooling cup of tea had rested near his hand.
His phone had displayed the name Chao Lun Hui on accounts, messages and records that belonged to a life no one here knew had existed.
In this world, every official object recognised Luo Yanhe.
Only Chao Lun Hui remembered Chao Lun Hui.
For the first time, he feared the investigation would expose him as an impostor.
At the same time, the evidence seemed determined to prove that he was not one.
An elder looked towards Shen Yan Ting.
Azure Cloud Elder : “His changed behaviour began after the forbidden technique.
The barrier intruder also recognised him.
We cannot dismiss the possibility that he was involved.”
Shen Yan Ting : “Suspicion is not evidence.”
His voice remained level.
The elder’s expression tightened.
Azure Cloud Elder : “Nor is recognition proof of innocence.”
Shen Yan Ting : “I did not say it was.”
He neither absolved Luo Yanhe nor allowed the elders to condemn him without proof.
Protection and trust remained separate things in Shen Yan Ting’s hands.
Luo Yanhe could respect the distinction, even while standing at the unpleasant centre of it.
Another elder brought forward a sealed register taken from the forbidden archive.
Several lines had been damaged, but the final assessment remained legible.
Subject survived.
Consciousness restored.
Cause unknown.
Beneath it, someone had written a later note.
Such recovery should be impossible.
Luo Yanhe read the words twice.
He had expected to be an outsider wearing another man’s life.
Instead, the body, the cultivation foundation and every official seal accepted him more readily than he accepted himself.
Was he adapting to Luo Yanhe’s body?
Or was the body quietly teaching him how to become Luo Yanhe?
Before anyone could continue, a deep vibration passed through the hall.
Every spiritual lamp flickered.
The elders turned towards the forbidden archive.
A messenger entered at speed and bowed.
Azure Cloud Disciple : “Elders, the ancient stone has awakened.”
One elder rose so quickly that his chair struck the floor.
Azure Cloud Elder : “The Truth Stone?”
Azure Cloud Disciple : “Yes.”
The messenger hesitated.
Azure Cloud Disciple : “It has responded to two spiritual signatures.”
Several gazes moved towards Shen Yan Ting and Luo Yanhe.
Luo Yanhe looked at the official register again.
The records said his survival was impossible.
His identity jade insisted he was genuine.
An enemy knew his name, and now an ancient artefact connected to hidden truth had awakened.
He had spent enough time allowing mysteries to arrive uninvited.
If Luo Yanhe was not supposed to exist, Chao Lun Hui intended to discover who had decided that.
