The sound of steel echoed through the silent dojo.
Clang!
Clang!
Clang!
Ryuu froze.
"...Steel?"
He lowered the wooden practice sword in his hand.
For the past year, the only sounds within the dojo had been those made by his own training.
Wood striking air.
Footsteps across the wooden floor.
His breathing.
Nothing more.
Yet just now...
He had clearly heard the collision of two steel blades.
Ryuu looked around.
The dojo remained empty.
Sunlight streamed through the windows.
Dust floated lazily through the air.
Everything appeared exactly as it always had.
"...Was it my imagination?"
He waited.
Several seconds passed.
Silence.
He shook his head.
"I've been training too much."
Picking up the practice sword once more, he resumed his stance.
Left foot forward.
Right foot behind.
Hands relaxed.
Breathing steady.
The posture had become second nature.
Swish!
Another clean downward slash.
Swish!
A horizontal cut.
Swish!
A thrust.
Each movement flowed into the next with increasing smoothness.
Unknown to Ryuu...
His body had begun changing.
Not through chakra.
Not through some mysterious power.
But through relentless repetition.
Every muscle remembered.
Every joint adapted.
Every step became more stable than the last.
The sword no longer felt like a foreign object.
It had become...
An extension of his body.
...
Several days later...
His mother stood quietly outside the dojo.
She had originally intended to call him for lunch.
Instead...
She remained where she was.
Watching.
Ryuu's movements were calm.
There was no unnecessary force.
No reckless swings.
No impatience.
He simply repeated the same fundamental exercises.
Again.
Again.
Again.
She smiled faintly.
"Father..."
"He really takes after you."
Her gaze drifted toward the old portrait hanging beside the ancestral shrine.
The man in the painting wore a simple dark kimono.
A katana rested calmly at his waist.
His expression was gentle.
Yet his eyes carried unwavering resolve.
Ryuu had asked about the portrait many times.
Every time...
His mother gave the same answer.
"He was one of the finest swordsmen our clan ever produced."
She never said more.
Perhaps...
The memories still hurt too much.
...
That afternoon...
Rain began falling across the village.
Most children stayed indoors.
Ryuu did not.
Standing beneath the covered entrance of the dojo, he watched the rain strike the abandoned training grounds.
Water slowly gathered within the cracks of the stone pathway.
The gentle sound filled the estate.
His eyes followed a single raindrop.
It landed upon a fallen leaf.
The leaf floated peacefully along a narrow stream formed by the rainwater.
Without resistance.
Without struggle.
Simply following its path.
Ryuu stared thoughtfully.
"...So that's how water moves."
He picked up his wooden sword.
Instead of his usual powerful downward slash...
He moved slowly.
The sword traced a gentle arc through the air.
Flowing.
Continuous.
Without sudden force.
Again.
Again.
Again.
The more he practiced...
The more natural it felt.
Not stronger.
Simply...
Smoother.
His movements became like flowing water.
Unable to explain why...
A faint smile appeared on his face.
...
That evening...
His mother returned carrying several scrolls from the village archives.
She found Ryuu sitting beside the cherry blossom tree.
His wooden sword rested across his lap.
"You've been thinking."
She knew him well.
Ryuu nodded.
"Mother."
"Hm?"
"Can a sword be gentle?"
She blinked.
It wasn't a question she expected from a child.
Instead of answering immediately, she sat beside him.
"The world believes swords exist to kill."
She gently picked up a fallen blossom.
"But our clan believed differently."
She placed the blossom upon the wooden sword.
"A true swordsman controls the sword."
"He is never controlled by it."
"If your heart is calm..."
"Even the sharpest blade can protect."
"If your heart is clouded..."
"Even a wooden sword becomes a weapon of destruction."
Ryuu looked down at the blossom resting upon the blade.
He quietly nodded.
"I understand."
"No."
His mother smiled warmly.
"You've only begun to understand."
"There is a difference."
Ryuu chuckled softly.
"I suppose you're right."
...
That night...
The rain finally stopped.
The moon emerged from behind the clouds.
Inside the dojo...
Ryuu stood before the ancestral tablets.
He bowed deeply.
Then quietly spoke.
"I still don't know who wrote the notebook."
"But..."
"I think I understand your first lesson now."
"The strongest swordsman..."
"...isn't the one with the strongest technique."
"It's the one who never stops improving."
Silence answered him.
Then—
Clang.
A single metallic sound echoed faintly beneath the floor.
Ryuu's eyes widened.
This time...
He knew he hadn't imagined it.
The sound lasted only an instant before fading into silence.
Far below the dojo...
Ancient seals engraved upon a massive stone gate emitted a barely visible blue glow.
The glow disappeared almost immediately.
As though the gate itself had acknowledged the words spoken by the young heir.
The seal had not opened.
Not yet.
But...
The first lock had begun to loosen.
