The narrow entrance loomed silently before them.
Neither Tolu nor Ore stepped inside.
For a long moment, they simply stared into the darkness.
Tolu finally broke the silence.
"What do you think it is?"
Ore tilted her head thoughtfully.
"Maybe an old mine."
"We don’t have any mines around here."
"True."
"Then... an abandoned tunnel?"
He shrugged.
"Could be."
She smiled.
"Or an old well that someone forgot to fill in."
Tolu looked down the dark opening.
"That’s a very strange-looking well."
"I said maybe."
He chuckled.
"I suppose there’s only one way to find out."
The two cautiously stepped closer.
The stone steps disappeared into the darkness after only a few meters.
Cool air drifted upward, carrying the scent of damp stone.
Another faint tremor rippled beneath their feet.
Rumble...
"So the shaking is definitely coming from below," Tolu murmured.
Ore nodded.
She leaned slightly to get a better look past the entrance.
"I can’t see the bottom."
She took one more careful step...
Her boot landed on loose gravel.
The stone shifted.
"Ah!"
The ground beneath her gave way.
"Ore!"
She slipped forward before she could catch herself, disappearing into the opening.
Without a second’s hesitation—
"ORE!"
Tolu threw himself after her.
The world became a blur.
Stone rushed past them.
They slid down a steep natural chute, twisting through darkness as loose dirt and pebbles tumbled around them.
Tolu reached out blindly.
His fingers caught Ore’s wrist for only an instant before they both spun apart again.
"Are you alright?" he shouted over the rush of sliding earth.
"I think so!"
The slope suddenly leveled.
With a final burst of speed, both of them tumbled onto smooth stone.
Thud!
Roll.
Thump.
For several seconds...
Neither moved.
Tolu groaned.
"I think..."
"...I’m going to feel that tomorrow."
Ore sat up slowly, brushing dust from her clothes.
"I’ve had better landings."
Tolu immediately turned toward her.
"Are you hurt?"
She blinked.
"No..."
"You?"
"I’m fine."
He let out a long breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.
Ore watched him quietly.
The panic in his voice when he had shouted her name...
The fact that he had jumped in after her without even stopping to think...
No hesitation.
No calculation.
Just instinct.
A small smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
You’re impossible, Tolu.
You really don’t realize, do you?
He was still checking her arms for injuries.
"I told you I’m alright."
"Just making sure."
She laughed softly.
"You’d better look around before you wear a hole through my sleeves."
Tolu finally looked away, rubbing the back of his neck in embarrassment.
"Right..."
His eyes slowly adjusted to the dim light.
The chamber around them was enormous.
Smooth stone walls stretched high above, disappearing into shadows.
Faint blue crystals embedded in the rock cast a gentle glow across the cavern.
The air felt... different.
He couldn’t explain why.
It was heavier.
Older.
Almost alive.
His gaze wandered across the vast underground chamber before returning to Ore.
"What..."
"...is this place?"
Ore’s expression had become unusually serious.
She looked around the chamber with careful, measured eyes.
Then she spoke quietly.
"Tolu..."
He turned toward her.
"Whatever you do..."
"...don’t panic."
He frowned.
"Why would I panic?"
She took a slow breath.
"Because..."
Her eyes swept across the glowing cavern once more.
"...I think we’ve just fallen into a dungeon."
Tolu stared at Ore, certain he had misheard her.
"A dungeon?"
His voice echoed softly through the vast chamber.
"You mean..."
"...a dungeon?"
Ore’s expression tightened.
She gave a quick nod.
"I think so."
Tolu’s mouth went dry.
"You mean the kind of dungeon that novice adventurers are forbidden from entering?"
"...Yes."
"The kind that even veteran adventurers prepare for weeks before exploring?"
"...Yes."
"The kind where entire parties disappear?"
Ore stepped closer and quickly placed a finger against his lips.
"Shhh."
Her voice dropped to barely a whisper.
"Keep your voice down."
Tolu instinctively lowered his voice.
"Sorry."
Ore slowly removed her hand.
"If this really is a dungeon..."
"...we have no idea what’s living in here."
Silence settled around them.
For the first time, Tolu truly looked at their surroundings.
The chamber was unnaturally still.
No birds.
No insects.
No wind.
Only the occasional drip of water somewhere in the darkness.
His heartbeat seemed deafening.
"What do we do?" he whispered.
Ore forced herself to stay calm.
"The same thing any sensible adventurer would do."
"We leave."
She turned toward the slope they had fallen from.
Both of them looked up.
The passage curved sharply overhead, disappearing into darkness.
The smooth stone walls offered no handholds.
Even if they could see the entrance...
Neither of them could possibly climb back.
Tolu swallowed.
"So..."
"...that’s not an option."
Ore nodded grimly.
"Then we find another way out."
She slowly drew her sword.
The faint scrape of steel against leather sounded unnaturally loud.
"You stay close."
"I wasn’t planning on going anywhere."
Together they stepped into the narrow corridor leading away from the chamber.
Darkness swallowed them almost immediately.
Without sunlight, they could barely make out one another.
Tolu stretched one hand forward, letting his fingertips brush the cold stone wall.
Ore did the same on the opposite side.
Each careful step echoed softly through the tunnel.
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Neither spoke.
The only sounds were their measured breathing and the slow rhythm of their boots against ancient stone.
Every few moments, Tolu reached out slightly, just enough to make sure Ore was still beside him.
She noticed...
But said nothing.
Somewhere far ahead...
Deep within the endless darkness...
Something rumbled.
Not the familiar tremor they had followed from above.
Something lower.
The tunnel stretched on for what felt like an eternity.
Step after careful step.
The darkness finally began to fade.
A pale blue glow shimmered ahead.
Tolu slowed.
"Do you see that?"
Ore nodded.
"I do."
The corridor widened into a circular chamber.
Both stopped in silent amazement.
The walls were covered with countless pale blue crystals, each no larger than a clenched fist.
Their gentle light washed over the room like moonlight, revealing smooth stone polished by time itself.
"What are those?" Tolu whispered.
Ore walked to the nearest crystal.
"Litites."
"You know them?"
She nodded.
"I’ve only seen drawings."
"They’re often found deep underground."
"They absorb mana and release a faint light."
"So they’re valuable?"
"A little."
"But they’re far too difficult to mine for ordinary people."
The two continued looking around.
Unlike the natural tunnels behind them...
This chamber looked deliberate.
Built.
At its center stood a simple stone altar.
No decorations.
No carvings.
Just a single object resting upon it.
A plain silver ring.
It wasn’t covered in jewels.
It wasn’t glowing.
It looked almost disappointingly ordinary.
Ore frowned.
"Someone put that there."
Tolu couldn’t take his eyes off it.
For some reason...
It felt familiar.
As though he had held it before.
As though...
It had been waiting.
"Tolu?"
He took a step forward.
Ore looked at him.
"Tolu."
Another step.
"I don’t think we should touch—"
Before she could finish...
He reached out.
His fingers closed around the ring.
Ore’s eyes widened.
"Tolu!"
The instant the ring left the altar...
Both of them threw themselves to the floor.
They waited.
One heartbeat.
Two.
Three.
Nothing.
No collapsing ceiling.
No hidden arrows.
No monsters.
Only silence.
Ore slowly opened one eye.
"...We’re alive."
Tolu blinked.
"I think so."
He looked down at the ring resting in his palm.
It felt...
Warm.
Not hot.
Comforting.
As though it recognized him.
