The message from The Keeper of Memories changed everything.

For days, Aren couldn’t stop thinking about it.

When books disappear, ask who fears the truth they contain.Full novel: THE ENDLESS DAWN — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The sentence seemed simple.

Yet the more he considered it, the more unsettling it became.

Someone wasn’t stealing books for profit.

They weren’t removing records randomly.

They were targeting specific knowledge.

Ancient knowledge.

Forbidden knowledge.

Knowledge connected to the seals.

Which meant someone feared the truth.

And people only feared the truth when it threatened something important.

Or someone important.

The realization lingered in Aren’s mind throughout the following week.

Classes became background noise.

Assignments felt unimportant.

Even the strange dreams had become secondary.

The investigation was growing.

The mystery was deepening.

And for the first time, Aren felt as though they were approaching something significant.

Something hidden beneath centuries of lies.

The breakthrough arrived unexpectedly.

It happened during a routine afternoon in the Grand Library.

Mira sat across from Aren at their usual table.

Books surrounded them.

Research notes filled several notebooks.

Neither had made much progress that day.

The investigation seemed stuck.

Again.

Mira sighed and closed another disappointing document.

“Nothing.”

Aren nodded.

“Same.”

For several moments, silence settled between them.

Then Mira suddenly froze.

Her eyes narrowed.

Aren noticed immediately.

“What is it?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached toward one of the books piled beside her.

A massive historical registry.

One they had already examined twice.

Carefully, she flipped through several pages.

Then stopped.

“There.”

Aren leaned forward.

“What am I looking at?”

Mira pointed toward a small section near the bottom of the page.

Most students would have ignored it.

Aren nearly did.

Then he saw the date.

His eyes widened.

The record was ancient.

Far older than the academy’s official founding date.

“That’s impossible.”

Mira nodded slowly.

“I thought so too.”

According to every history book, Astryx Academy was approximately eight hundred years old.

The document suggested otherwise.

Much older otherwise.

The entry itself was brief.

Only a few lines survived.

Yet those lines changed everything.

Year 0 of the Third Archive Restoration

Records transferred from the previous academy complex.

Approved by the Council of Keepers.

Aren read the passage three times.

Then a fourth.

His confusion only grew.

“Third restoration?”

“Exactly.”

Mira tapped the page.

“If this is the third restoration, there had to be at least two before it.”

Aren immediately understood the implication.

The academy existed before the academy.

Some version of Astryx Academy had operated long before its official history began.

Which raised an obvious question.

Why hide that fact?

Most institutions celebrated long histories.

They didn’t erase them.

Unless there was a reason.

A dangerous reason.

The discovery led them deeper into the library archives.

Hours passed.

Then more hours.

Eventually they uncovered additional references.

Most were fragmented.

Damaged.

Incomplete.

Yet a pattern emerged.

The earliest records consistently referenced something called the First Academy.

Unlike modern Astryx Academy, the First Academy appeared radically different.

Smaller.

And significantly more secretive.

Many documents described it as a sanctuary rather than a school.

A place dedicated to preservation.

Not education.

Preservation of what?

The records rarely said.

Whenever details approached something important, the text abruptly ended.

Pages disappeared.

Entire sections were missing.

The same frustrating pattern appeared again.

Someone had edited history.

Deliberately.

Repeatedly.

Over centuries.

As evening approached, Aren discovered another unusual document.

Unlike most records, this one remained remarkably well preserved.

Its title immediately caught his attention.

Foundational Directives

Mira moved closer.

Together they examined the text.

The document outlined the academy’s original purpose.

Or at least part of it.

Several sections remained intact.

Most discussed preserving knowledge.

Protecting historical records.

Maintaining secrecy.

Then they reached the final paragraph.

Both froze.

The Academy exists to guard the Three Seals until the appointed successor arrives.

Silence filled the archive.

Aren stared.

Then read it again.

And again.

The words remained unchanged.

Three seals.

Not one.

Three.

The hidden page they found earlier had mentioned three seals as well.

This wasn’t coincidence.

It was confirmation.

Mira spoke first.

“The academy wasn’t built around education.”

Aren nodded slowly.

“It was built around the seals.”

The realization felt enormous.

Everything suddenly made more sense.

The hidden chambers.

The restricted archives.

The missing records.

The secrecy.

Astryx Academy wasn’t merely hiding ancient mysteries.

Its entire existence revolved around them.

The appointed successor.

Those words bothered Aren.

A lot.

Because he had encountered similar phrases before.

Ancient prophecies.

Dormant inheritances.

The Awakener.

Everything seemed connected.

Yet he desperately hoped it wasn’t connected to him.

Unfortunately, hope was becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

Aren looked toward Mira.

“What if the successor is real?”

Mira considered the question.

Then frowned.

“Someone was expected.”

“That’s what it sounds like.”

The silence that followed felt uncomfortable.

Because neither wanted to say the obvious possibility aloud.

The academy’s secrets had started reacting only after Aren arrived.

Artifacts activated.

Dreams intensified.

Ancient records surfaced.

The timing was difficult to ignore.

Very difficult.

Night settled over the academy.

Most students returned to their dormitories.

Aren and Mira remained in the library.

Their table now overflowed with documents.

Historical references.

Architectural reports.

Ancient directives.

The investigation had become larger than either expected.

Then they discovered something truly disturbing.

A hidden appendix attached to the Foundational Directives.

The pages had been folded together.

Almost concealed.

Aren carefully unfolded them.

The text inside appeared older than everything else.

The handwriting differed.

More formal.

The first line immediately captured their attention.

In the event of successor awakening, all records concerning the Throne must remain sealed.

Aren’s stomach tightened.

The Throne.

Again.

Always the throne.

Every path eventually led back to it.

The document continued.

The Throne must never be restored.

The Gates must never be opened.

The Sleeper must never return.

The atmosphere around the table seemed to grow colder.

Neither spoke.

Because the implications were obvious.

Something had happened long ago.

Something catastrophic.

The academy existed to prevent it from happening again.

Suddenly, a memory surfaced inside Aren’s mind.

Not a dream.

Not a vision.

A memory fragment.

Brief.

Yet powerful.

The silver-haired woman standing before a massive golden gate.

The sky burning overhead.

Ancient armies retreating.

Darkness spreading across the horizon.

And her voice.

“The gates cannot open.”

The memory vanished almost immediately.

Aren grabbed the edge of the table.

Mira noticed.

“Aren?”

“I’m okay.”

A lie.

A terrible lie.

Yet explaining memory fragments remained difficult.

Especially when he barely understood them himself.

Hours later, as they prepared to leave, Mira made another discovery.

A tiny notation hidden in the corner of an ancient map.

Most people would never notice it.

Mira did.

The notation referenced a location beneath the academy.

One not shown on modern maps.

One not even shown on the hidden archive maps.

A location labeled:

Hall of Records Prime

Aren frowned.

“Prime?”

Mira nodded.

“Original records.”

The realization hit both of them simultaneously.

The archives they had been exploring weren’t the oldest records.

Not even close.

There was another archive.

A deeper archive.

The original archive.

The place where the academy’s first records were likely stored.

If it still existed.

And if it did—

It might contain answers.

Real answers.

Not fragments.

Not clues.

Not half-destroyed documents.

Answers.

Far above, thunder rolled across the night sky.

Storm clouds gathered over Astryx Academy.

Wind swept across the towers.

Ancient banners fluttered.

Within the highest tower, Professor Selene stared at a report recently delivered by a senior archivist.

Her expression darkened.

Because several ancient records had been accessed.

Records no student should know existed.

Someone was getting closer.

Much closer.

Meanwhile, deep beneath the academy, beyond forgotten chambers and hidden archives, an enormous sealed gate stood in darkness.

Ancient runes glowed across its surface.

Thousands of symbols rotated slowly.

The magical barriers remained intact.

For now.

Yet new cracks had appeared.

Tiny fractures spreading through the seal.

Growing.

Waiting.

And somewhere beyond that gate, a sleeping presence stirred once more.

Not awake.

Not yet.

But listening.

As if it could hear every step Aren took toward the truth.

And perhaps it was.

Because the deeper Aren investigated, the more he realized something terrifying.

He wasn’t merely uncovering history.

History was uncovering him.
