Winter mutters under her breath as she stares at her reflection in the mirror.

It is Monday—her first day at Crestwood Academy.

She is wearing a navy pleated skirt and a white blouse tucked neatly under a tailored blazer bearing the school’s crest on the left pocket.Full novel: The Enemy Between Us — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

The uniform is elegant, but it clings to her in a way that makes her uncomfortably aware of her curves.

She runs a hand through her white hair, a sharp contrast against the blazer, and sighs.

Winter is used to drawing attention because of her appearance, but Crestwood feels like a different level entirely.

A soft knock on the door interrupts her thoughts.

“Are you ready to go, hun?” Sarah’s voice comes through the door.

Winter takes one last look in the mirror.

“Yeah, Mom. Come in,” she replies.

Sarah steps in, looking immaculate in a tailored cream dress that exudes class.

She moves with a poise that seems almost foreign to Winter now, as if every part of her has been curated for this new life they are entering.

The distance between them seems to grow wider each time she sees her mother.

“How are you feeling?” Sarah asks, giving Winter a once-over.

“I’m fine,” Winter shrugs.

“Just… nervous, I guess.”

“That’s normal, honey,” Sarah says, offering a small, understanding smile.

“First days are always hard. But Crestwood is a wonderful place. You’ll adjust in no time.”

Winter nods, not seeing the need to say more.

Their interactions have become short and superficial lately.

“Let’s get going, then,” Sarah says, gesturing toward the door.

“The car’s ready.”

Winter grabs her leather satchel and slings it over her shoulder, following her mother down the grand staircase.

Their footsteps echo through the quiet mansion.

As they reach the foyer, Sarah pauses and turns to Winter.

“Dear, about the wedding,” she begins, “Marcus and I have decided to make it happen this Saturday.”

“This Saturday? Isn’t that in—” Winter frowns.

“Six days, yes,” Sarah interrupts.

“Marcus and I have been planning it for a while. He wants to use the wedding as a way to introduce us to the upper-class community properly. It’s a big opportunity for us.”

“Wait… you’ve been planning it for a while? I thought Marcus proposed just days ago?” Winter asks, sensing something off.

Sarah hesitates, then quickly places a hand on Winter’s arm.

“What I meant is that Marcus has connections. He can speed things up. I’ve been overwhelmed, so it feels like the wedding planning has been going on forever.”

Winter doesn’t entirely believe her, but she lets it go.

Sarah continues, “Look, honey, I know it’s all happening fast, but this wedding is a chance for us to step into a different world. A better one. Will you support me?”

Winter studies her mother, realizing more clearly now how desperately Sarah wants to climb the social ladder.

Then she’ll be free to pursue her own path.

“I support you, Mom. Congratulations,” Winter replies, trying to muster some enthusiasm.

“I know it’s a lot, but this is the best thing for us. Trust me,” Sarah says softly before heading toward the car, her face brightening with relief.

Winter follows her mother out and climbs into the limousine waiting outside.

They ride in silence, Winter staring out the window the whole way.

When they finally arrive at Crestwood, Winter takes a deep breath, taking in the size and grandeur of the campus.

She pushes down the knot of nerves in her stomach, straightens her shoulders, and reminds herself, Don’t let them see you hesitate.

As the limousine comes to a stop, Mark, the driver, announces, “Here we are.”

“I’ll pick you up after school, alright?” Sarah adds with a reassuring smile.

Winter nods, managing a small smile of her own as she steps out of the car.

She feels eyes on her immediately—the new girl with the striking hair, a stranger entering a place where everyone already knows each other.

She keeps her chin up and walks with purpose toward the entrance, her heart racing but her steps steady.

Inside, the school gleams with polished floors and carefully curated spaces that hint at privilege.

She tightens her grip on her bag, reminding herself, Walk like you belong, and soon enough, they’ll believe it too.

At her locker, her fingers hesitate as she tries to recall the combination.

But instead of panicking, she whispers to herself, “Come on, Winter, focus.”

“Need some help?” a cheerful voice sounds behind her.

Winter turns to see a girl with long dark hair and a warm smile standing nearby.

She is wearing the same Crestwood uniform.

“I’ve got it,” Winter replies, managing to open the locker after a few more tries.

The girl doesn’t leave.

Instead, she grins and introduces herself.

“I’m Aleira, by the way.”

“Winter,” Winter replies, not wanting to be rude but also not expecting to make friends right away.

Aleira glances at her uniform.

“You’re in Year 5, right? The navy tie gives it away.”

“Really?” Winter asks, surprised.

“Do the colors mean something?”

Aleira laughs.

“Yeah. Year 1 wears light blue, Year 2 green, Year 3 yellow, Year 4 orange, and Year 5—us—navy. It’s kind of a hierarchy. The older you are, the more respect you get. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work.”

Winter looks around, noting the mix of colors.

Aleira chuckles.

“Not really. Even the cafeterias are separate. Everyone mostly sticks to their own group.”

“That sounds… intense,” Winter replies.

“You get used to it,” Aleira says with a shrug.

“Final year’s the best, though. We get the most privileges, and we’re practically running the place.”

Winter detects a hint of sarcasm in Aleira’s tone, which she likes.

“Sounds like a lot of pressure,” Winter notes.

“You have no idea,” Aleira says, leaning against the lockers.

“I can show you around if you want. Stick with me, and you’ll have it figured out in no time.”

“That would be great. Thanks,” Winter replies, smiling as she follows Aleira down the hallway.

As they walk, Aleira points out classrooms and gives a quick rundown of the school’s layout.

Winter gradually relaxes, finding comfort in Aleira’s easygoing nature.

When they enter homeroom, a hush falls over the room.

Winter can feel eyes on her again, but this time, it doesn’t faze her as much.

She holds her head high, following Aleira to a seat near the front.

Aleira leans over and whispers, “That’s Diana.”

She nods toward a tall blonde girl in the back who is watching Winter with a dismissive glare.

“She’s the queen bee around here. Just ignore her.”

Winter casts a brief glance toward Diana, keeping her expression neutral.

She isn’t here for drama.

“Got it,” she whispers back and settles into her seat.

The teacher begins roll call, pausing when he reaches her name.

“Winter Bond?” he calls out.

“Here,” Winter replies, her voice steady, though she feels her heart race as her name echoes in the room.

She doesn’t know how much weight the Bond name will carry here, but she is about to find out.

Immediately, a murmur sweeps through the class.

“Bond? As in Marcus Bond?” a girl near the front whispers, her eyes wide with curiosity.

“I thought Marcus didn’t have a daughter…” another student says, leaning toward his friend.

In the back, Diana’s voice rings out with a mocking tone.

“I guess they’re letting in charity cases now,” she says, her smirk directed at Winter.

A few students chuckle uneasily, looking between Diana and Winter, as if waiting to see her reaction.

Winter’s gaze narrows slightly.

She has dealt with enough bullying from Sylvia and isn’t about to let it start again here.

“That’s enough, Diana,” the teacher cuts in, his tone firm.

“Let’s remember that Winter Bond is part of our community now and deserves the same respect as everyone else.”
