“Yan Jin, if you still do not wake up, we will all die here.” A woman’s low sobbing voice came from beside her.
Die? Wasn’t she in the hospital?
Startled, she opened her eyes and looked at the surroundings. Only then did she suddenly realize that she was in a completely unfamiliar environment. It was not her own room, nor was it a hospital. Instead, she was in a pitch black ruin.
From the distance came waves of furious roars from zombies, and the outside world seemed extremely dangerous.
“Where is this?” Her gaze fell on a thin woman beside her, whose face still carried tear stains.
The woman said in great surprise, “You woke up? Are you alright?”
A series of dull footsteps sounded from outside. The woman quickly covered Yan Jin’s mouth, afraid that she might make even the slightest sound.
After quite a while, when the footsteps outside the door gradually faded into the distance, the woman finally let out a sigh of relief.
“This is an underground mall not far from our residential complex. Various teams have already swept through here, so it is relatively safe. It is just that there is no food left here. If we stay any longer, we will still end up dying.”
Yan Jin felt somewhat curious. “You know me?”
In her memory, there did not seem to be any trace of the girl in front of her.
The woman’s throat bobbed as she spoke with a hint of annoyance.
“You do not remember? I live next door to you. My name is Bai Ruozhu. If you had not given me those two bags of instant noodles, you would not have been abandoned by them. I dragged you down with me. I am sorry.”
Seeing the blank expression on Yan Jin’s face, Bai Ruozhu knew that the woman before her had probably forgotten everything that had happened earlier.
“Originally, I came out to look for supplies. I did not expect to see your family driving out of the ruins. Then it seemed like you all started arguing. I saw them throw you out of the car. A group of zombies was not far away. How could they do something like that?” The more Bai Ruozhu spoke, the more emotional she became, as if the one who had been abandoned was herself.
She paused for a moment, then continued, “I remembered that there was a radio in the ruins, so I quietly took it while watching them drive away. I used the radio to lure the zombies away, and only then did I manage to rescue you.”
After hearing her explanation, memories that belonged to the original owner of her body slowly surfaced in Yan Jin’s mind. She realized that she had transmigrated into a novel, becoming the cannon fodder female supporting character from the apocalypse novel she had stayed up all night reading.
The original owner of her body had been separated from her parents when she was young and was later picked up by that family.
Her current mother disliked her very much, which resulted in her having very low status within the family. Her personality had also become extremely timid, and she was often abused by her younger brother.
Yan Jin vaguely remembered that the original owner had once possessed an ability. Her younger brother had obtained some kind of cultivation method from somewhere, which allowed him to plunder the abilities of others. He had taken away her ability and frequently abused her afterward.
“Sister, this way… you won’t be able to escape from my side anymore, right?”
Such words constantly flashed through Yan Jin’s mind.
Just before she had transmigrated, the original owner and her parents had encountered a small zombie tide. In order to buy themselves time to escape, they had thrown her down and left her behind.
“So… what should we do now?” Bai Ruozhu asked.
Yan Jin thought to herself that she had finally managed to escape. If she went to a nearby base and her “good” younger brother discovered her, she would definitely be captured and taken back. After all, she did not even have any abilities now.
Every time she thought about her younger brother, the original owner’s heart would involuntarily tremble with fear.
“I know of a courtyard that is safe. Do you want to go there with me?”
The courtyard had been discovered by the original owner by accident after she had slipped and fallen once. It had been abandoned for many years, and no one knew about it. It was a very good place to hide.
Bai Ruozhu nodded and trusted her completely.
Over the years, Yan Jin had been the first person to extend a helping hand to her. In this apocalyptic world, they could only depend on each other.
The two of them rummaged through the surrounding boxes, hoping to find some kind of weapon for self defense.
Yan Jin thought to herself that fortunately she had transmigrated right when the apocalypse had just begun.
The zombies had not evolved yet. Their movements were slow. They were only stronger than normal people, their hearing was unusually sensitive. If they were nimble enough, they might be able to avoid them.
Bai Ruozhu found two baseball bats and handed one to Yan Jin.
The two of them removed the shoes they were wearing and placed them into their originally empty backpacks.
“All the edible food here has already been looted,” Bai Ruozhu said as she watched Yan Jin, who still refused to give up searching for food.
Yan Jin searched twice and did not even find a single breadcrumb. She could not help but sigh.
“Let’s go.”
The two of them proceeded cautiously along the way.
“There is a small shop ahead. Let’s go take a look.” Yan Jin placed her only hope on that small shop.
Bang.
A sudden explosion sounded in the distance. The zombies nearby heard the noise and all moved toward the direction of the explosion.
The two women hiding in the shadows both let out a sigh of relief. In that case, they would not need to confront so many zombies.
“You wait here for a moment. I will go check if there are any zombies inside,” Yan Jin said.
“No, I want to go with you,” Bai Ruozhu said firmly.
Seeing the determination in her eyes, Yan Jin could only nod.
The two of them headed toward the shop one after the other, gripping their baseball bats tightly, afraid that a zombie might suddenly jump out from somewhere.
“There is bread.” Inside the shop, Yan Jin found a packet of bread scattered on the ground. She checked the date on the packaging and saw that it was still very fresh. It was likely dropped by the shop owner while fleeing.
“I will go check the warehouse,” Bai Ruozhu said.
The tightly closed warehouse seemed to give off a strange and eerie feeling.
“Do not go.”
“Why?” Bai Ruozhu asked in confusion.
“Logically speaking, the warehouse in a shop should contain the most supplies. Before the shop owner fled, they would definitely open the door to take things. But when you are escaping in a hurry, would you remember to close the door?”
“Definitely not.”
“There is nothing left here. Let’s leave quickly.” Yan Jin grabbed Bai Ruozhu’s hand and pulled her out of the shop.
