Chapter 2: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

Kai's eyes snapped open.

He gasped for air, cold sweat rolling down his forehead. The familiar ceiling of his small bedroom came into view, lit by soft morning sunlight through the window.

"...A dream?"

He sat up slowly and looked around. Everything was exactly the same — his old wooden desk, the cracked wall beside his bed, the faded football resting in the corner of the room.

Kai rubbed his temples. Last night he'd stayed behind on the school football field. He'd taken one final shot. Then a strange blue light had crossed the night sky, and a cold mechanical voice had echoed inside his mind.

[Suitable Host Detected.]

[Initializing Football Legacy System.]

The memory felt incredibly vivid — too vivid to be an ordinary dream. He looked around his room again. Nothing appeared. No blue screen. No mysterious voice.

Kai laughed and shook his head. "I must've been too tired..."

"Kai!" His mother's voice came from downstairs. "Breakfast!"

"I'm coming!"

He changed into his school uniform and carried his old football downstairs. Maria was already preparing breakfast. Daniel, back from another early shift, sat drinking coffee before heading out again. Sofia waved as soon as she saw her brother.

"Good morning, Kuya!"

"Morning."

She tilted her head. "You look sleepy."

Kai smiled awkwardly. "I didn't sleep very well."

Daniel glanced at him. "Were you thinking about football again?"

"A little."

Daniel chuckled and stood, grabbing his worn jacket. "I figured. Remember what I told you yesterday."

"The players who refuse to stop working..."

"...are the ones who eventually catch up."

Daniel smiled and patted Kai's shoulder before leaving for work. The small house went quiet. Maria spooned more rice onto Kai's plate. "Don't skip lunch today."

"I won't."

"And don't train until it's dark again."

Kai hesitated. "...I'll try."

Maria sighed. She already knew what that answer meant.

School felt no different from any other day. Students chatted excitedly about the recently concluded FIFA World Cup.

"Did you see Spain's final?"

"They deserved to win."

"Lamine Yamal was unbelievable."

"I wish the Philippines could play in the World Cup someday."

Kai listened silently as he walked through the hallway, his footsteps slowing. The Philippines... would that day ever come? He clenched his fist. "One day... I'll make it happen."

Physical Education ended before lunch, and as usual, the school football team gathered on the training field. Coach Ramirez blew his whistle. "Warm-up!"

The players began jogging. Kai joined them. His legs still ached from yesterday's extra training, but he forced himself to keep pace. Five laps later, his breathing turned ragged and his chest burned. A few teammates noticed.

"Look at him. He's already dying."

"Maybe football just isn't your sport."

The group laughed. Kai lowered his head, wanting to answer back, wanting to prove them wrong. But not yet. Not like this.

Coach Ramirez gathered everyone at midfield and pointed toward a line of cones. "Simple drill. Dribble through the cones. First touch. Control. Finish. Understood?"

"Yes, Coach!"

The starters went first — quick touches, clean control, accurate finishes. When Kai's turn came, he took a breath. "Focus."

He pushed the ball forward. The first touch was too heavy, and it rolled farther than expected. He rushed after it. The second touch came too late, clipping a cone, and by the time he reached the shooting area his balance was already gone. He swung his foot. Bang! The shot sailed nearly two meters over the crossbar.

Silence. Then laughter.

"I told you!"

"Reserve player for a reason!"

"Even my little brother shoots better!"

Kai bit his lip, his face burning with embarrassment. Coach Ramirez blew the whistle. "Kai. Again."

"Yes, Coach."

He reset the ball and concentrated harder. First touch — still too strong. Second touch — off balance. Final shot—

Clang! The ball smashed into the goalpost and bounced away.

Coach's face stayed unreadable. "You've improved your determination. But your first touch is still your biggest weakness."

Kai lowered his head. "...Yes, Coach."

While the others prepared for the next drill, Kai walked over to retrieve the ball and stared at it for a long moment. "No matter how hard I train... why can't I get any better?"

A sharp pain pierced his head. He stumbled. "...Ugh!"

The world blurred. His heartbeat spiked. The sounds of the field faded into silence, and a familiar mechanical voice echoed inside his mind.

[Host's emotional state has reached the required threshold.]

Kai froze, eyes widening. "That voice...!"

Before he could react, a translucent blue screen appeared before his eyes — visible, it seemed, only to him.

Kai's breathing turned uneven. The screen floated silently in front of him, glowing with a faint azure light.

"...W-What is this?"

He rubbed his eyes. It remained. He blinked several times. Still there. Around him, training continued as normal — teammates chasing the ball, Coach Ramirez shouting instructions from the sideline. No one seemed to notice the screen hovering inches from his face.

"Can... only I see this?"

The mechanical voice echoed again.

Kai's heart pounded. "I... I'm not imagining this."

New lines of text shimmered onto the screen.

> FOOTBALL LEGACY SYSTEM

>

> Purpose: To cultivate the greatest footballer in history through discipline, perseverance, and continuous improvement.

>

> Warning: This system does not grant instant talent. Every improvement must be earned.

Kai stared at those words. Instead of disappointment, he felt relief. If the system had simply turned him into a genius overnight, none of it would feel real. But this — this meant he still had to work. He still had to earn every step.

The screen changed again.

[Analysis Complete.]

Host possesses exceptional determination.

Host possesses below-average physical ability.

Host possesses poor technical fundamentals.

Host's greatest strength: Never Gives Up.

Kai couldn't help but smile. At least he had one strength — even if nobody else noticed it.

Ding!

Beginner Mission Unlocked

Mission 001 — Master Your First Touch

Objective: Complete 100 successful first touches during training.

Reward: Ball Control +1, EXP +10

Penalty for failure: None.

Kai frowned. "...Only plus one?" He'd expected something unbelievable — ten levels at once, instant speed.

[Warning.]

Football is built through thousands of repetitions.

Shortcuts create weak foundations.

Greatness cannot be downloaded.

Kai read it, then nodded slowly. "You're right." If football were that easy, everyone in the world would be a superstar.

The screen faded, leaving only a small quest notification in the corner of his vision.

Successful First Touches: 0 / 100

"Kai!" Coach Ramirez's voice snapped him back. "What are you waiting for? The ball won't control itself!"

"Y-Yes, Coach!"

He jogged back into position. This time, instead of thinking about the players laughing at him, he focused only on the ball. Coach rolled a pass toward him. *Soft first touch*, Kai remembered. He relaxed his body, opened his foot, and let the ball settle gently in front of him.

Ding. 1 / 100

He froze for a split second. "It counted..." A smile spread across his face.

Again. 2 / 100. Again. 3 / 100. The fourth attempt bounced too far — no notification. Kai didn't get frustrated. He just adjusted.

By the end of the drill, his progress had reached 17 / 100. Not much. But for the first time in years, he could see himself improving — not because of luck, not because someone pitied him, but because of every correct touch.

As training ended, a few teammates walked past him.

"Still staying behind? Waste of time."

"You'll never catch up."

Kai picked up a football and smiled. Maybe yesterday those words would have hurt. Today, they were motivation.

He looked out at the quiet field as the sun began to set, and whispered to himself, "I'll do it one touch at a time."

The quest notification glowed faintly: 17 / 100.

Far above the clouds, no one noticed a faint blue light watching silently — as if the Football Legacy System itself had begun observing the journey of a boy the world had already given up on.

But legends never begin with applause. They begin with a single step.
