Chapter 8: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The world seemed to stand still.

Kai's left foot was planted on the grass, his right leg hung in the air, ready to strike. Ahead, the goalkeeper charged forward, arms spread wide.

To his right, Rafael stood completely unmarked. To his left, the far corner of the goal was wide open.

One decision. One chance. One mistake could change everything.

Daniel's words echoed in his mind. Football isn't about being the hero.

Kai inhaled sharply. At the last second, he opened his body as if aiming for the far post. The goalkeeper reacted immediately, throwing himself toward the expected shot.

Instead, Kai gently pushed the ball across the penalty area — a perfect square pass.

"Rafa!"

Rafael didn't need a second invitation. He arrived at full speed and struck it first time.

BANG!

The net rippled. For a brief moment the stadium fell silent — then the San Isidro supporters erupted.

"GOAAAL!"

Students jumped from their seats. Substitutes sprinted the touchline in celebration. Even Coach Ramirez clenched his fist before catching himself.

San Isidro High School had taken the lead.

San Isidro 1–0 Riverside Academy

Rafael turned to Kai with a huge grin. "You could've taken the shot yourself!"

Kai smiled, still catching his breath. "I saw you."

Rafael laughed and threw an arm around his shoulder. "Best decision you've made all day."

The referee signaled for play to resume. As both teams walked back to the halfway line, Miguel gave Kai a subtle thumbs-up. No words needed — everyone understood how important that pass had been.

Near the stands, Arturo Villanueva quietly closed his notebook. Most spectators were praising Rafael for the goal. Arturo wasn't watching Rafael — he was replaying the build-up in his head. Kai had fooled the goalkeeper without touching the ball twice. That wasn't luck. That was composure.

He uncapped his pen and added another note under Kai's name.

Excellent decision under pressure. Chose the better option over personal glory.

A faint smile. "You play to win, not to shine." That quality was far harder to teach than shooting or dribbling.

The match restarted, and Riverside responded like a wounded animal. Their captain barked instructions, pushing his team higher up the pitch, and within minutes San Isidro found themselves pinned inside their own half.

"Stay compact! Don't dive into tackles!" Coach Ramirez shouted.

Kai dropped deeper than usual, helping Miguel close passing lanes, lungs burning, legs growing heavier by the minute. This wasn't training anymore. This was tournament football, and every player on the field was giving everything they had.

In the thirty-fourth minute, Riverside nearly equalized. Their winger beat two defenders and whipped a cross toward the six-yard box, where a towering striker rose above everyone and thundered a header goalward.

Bang!— off the crossbar.

The rebound bounced into a scrum of bodies in the box. Kai spotted it first, threw himself into the challenge, and cleared it beyond the halfway line.

The whistle blew. Halftime.

Kai bent over, hands on his knees, jersey clinging to him, sweat dripping onto the grass. He'd never played with this intensity before.

Walking to the bench, a familiar blue screen appeared before his eyes.

Kai blinked. The screen faded. For the first time, the system hadn't praised him — it had warned him.

Coach Ramirez gathered the team in a circle. No one spoke. The second half would decide everything.

Just as Coach was about to give his instructions, a voice called from behind the bench. "Coach Ramirez."

Everyone turned. A man in a navy windbreaker stood a few meters away, a small notebook in hand — Arturo Villanueva.

He smiled politely. "When the match is over, I'd like a word with one of your players."

The players fell silent around Coach Ramirez. No one needed reminding how important the next forty minutes were. One goal wasn't enough of a lead against a team like Riverside.

Coach crouched and traced a rough pitch on the ground with his finger. "They'll come after us now — they're trailing, so they'll take more risks." He pointed to the wide areas. "Their full-backs will push higher. That leaves space behind them."

His eyes settled on Kai. "Bendaño."

"Yes, Coach?"

"You've been making good runs. Don't force them. Wait for the right moment."

Kai nodded. "I understand."

Coach stood and clapped his hands. "Let's finish this."

The second half began with Riverside pressing aggressively, and every San Isidro player was forced to work twice as hard. Miguel dropped deeper to help the defense. Rafael chased every loose ball. Even Kai found himself sprinting back into his own half to support the midfield. The game had become a battle of endurance.

Twenty minutes remained. The score was still 1–0.

Riverside's captain received the ball just outside the box, looked up once, and slipped a clever pass between two defenders. Their striker was through. The crowd gasped. San Isidro's keeper rushed off his line.

**Bang!** — the shot flew for the bottom corner, only for the keeper to stretch out his right leg and block it.

The rebound spun loose. Kai reached it first and cleared it to the touchline.

The whistle sounded. Throw-in.

Coach Ramirez let out a quiet breath. "Good recovery."

Minutes passed. The pace slowed as fatigue set in on both sides — cramped legs, heavy breathing, slower reactions.

Kai wiped his forehead as Miguel jogged beside him. "You still good?"

Kai managed a tired smile. "I've been better."

Miguel laughed. "That means you're doing fine."

With less than five minutes left, Riverside committed nearly everyone forward — even one of their center-backs joined the attack. Coach Ramirez saw it immediately. "Counter if you win it!"

The chance came sooner than expected. A Riverside cross was headed away by San Isidro's defense and landed at Miguel's feet. He didn't hesitate — one touch, then another, bursting through midfield before lifting his head.

Kai had already started running. Not toward the ball — into the empty space behind Riverside's defense.

A blue screen flashed before his eyes.

Kai didn't need a second invitation. He accelerated. Miguel delivered a perfectly weighted through ball, and Kai reached it in stride — only the goalkeeper stood between him and the goal.

This time there was no teammate beside him, no easy pass. Only a split second to decide.

The keeper rushed out. Kai took one touch to his left. The keeper committed. Kai calmly rolled the ball into the empty net.

For a heartbeat, everything was silent. Then the stadium exploded.

"GOOOOOAL!"

Sofia jumped up and down in the stands, waving both arms. "I told you, Dad! I told you Kuya would score!"

Daniel didn't celebrate wildly — he simply clapped, pride shining in his eyes.

Across the touchline, Coach Ramirez pumped his fist once before returning to his usual calm expression. "Well done."

The final whistle echoed through the stadium.

*San Isidro High School 2–0 Riverside Academy*

The players embraced, exhausted but smiling. It was only the first match of the group stage — but it was the perfect start.

As the team thanked the supporters, Kai bent down to untie his boots. A shadow fell across him.

"You're Kai Bendaño, right?"

Kai looked up. Standing before him was the man in the navy windbreaker.

"My name is Arturo Villanueva. I've been watching your match."

Kai hesitated before shaking his hand. "...Did I do something wrong, sir?"

Arturo chuckled. "No." He reached into his jacket and handed Kai a simple business card. "You did something interesting."

Before Kai could ask anything else, Arturo turned and walked away.

Kai looked down at the card. Just a name, a phone number, and one line printed beneath it:

*Youth Talent Scout*

At the far end of the parking lot, someone quietly watched the scene unfold — the girl with the camera. She lowered it slowly, eyes fixed on Kai.

"...He's changed."

A gentle breeze brushed through the trees as a faint smile crossed her face. She whispered so softly that only she could hear it.

"Welcome back... Kai."
