The hallway buzzed with chatter as students crowded around Noah’s phone.

“It’s obviously edited,” one boy scoffed.

“My uncle says strange lights have been appearing there for years,” another whispered.Full novel: The Forest Never Forgets — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Maybe someone is filming a movie.”

The bell rang before anyone could argue further, but the photograph lingered in Elara’s mind long after everyone had returned to class.

She couldn’t stop staring at it.

That path.

It shouldn’t exist.

Yet there it was, winding into the heart of Blackwood Forest as though it had always been there.

By lunchtime, the photo had spread across every social media platform.

Some people laughed at it.

Others claimed the image had been created with artificial intelligence.

A few older residents of Ashwood didn’t laugh at all.

Mrs.

Collins, the owner of the bakery, quietly closed her shop an hour early.

The town librarian stood outside the library, watching the distant tree line with an expression Elara had never seen before.

Even Sheriff Hayes drove past the forest entrance twice that afternoon.

Something had changed.

The whole town could feel it.

“So…” Noah said as they sat beneath the old oak tree behind the school.

“We’re going after school, right?”

Elara nearly choked on her drink.

“Excuse me?”

“To the forest.”

“No.”

“You thought about it.”

“I did not.”

“You’ve been staring at that photo all morning.”

Elara sighed.

“Maybe a little.”

Noah leaned closer.

“What if someone made the path?”

“What if they didn’t?”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The wind rustled through the branches overhead.

“I don’t like mysteries,” Noah admitted.

“But I hate unanswered questions even more.”

Elara laughed.

“That’s exactly why we’d get into trouble.”

Classes dragged on for what felt like forever.

History.

Chemistry.

Mathematics.

Elara heard almost none of it.

Every time she looked out the classroom window, she could see the tops of Blackwood Forest swaying gently in the distance.

It almost looked…

alive.

When the final bell rang, Noah was already waiting outside with his backpack slung over one shoulder.

“I brought flashlights.”

“We’re not staying until dark.”

“I also brought snacks.”

Elara smiled despite herself.

“You planned this, didn’t you?”

“For about three hours.”

She rolled her eyes.

“Fine.”

“But we only look from the entrance.”

Noah grinned.

“I knew you’d say yes.”

The walk to Blackwood Forest took twenty minutes.

The closer they came, the quieter everything became.

The cheerful sounds of the town slowly disappeared behind them.

No barking dogs.

No passing cars.

No birds.

Only the crunch of gravel beneath their shoes.

The old warning sign stood exactly where Elara remembered.

BLACKWOOD FOREST

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK

Someone had placed fresh white flowers beneath it.

Neither of them mentioned it.

“This is where the path should be,” Noah said, comparing the photograph to the real forest.

“There isn’t anything.”

Elara nodded.

The thick wall of trees stretched endlessly before them.

No trail.

No opening.

No sign that anyone had entered recently.

“Maybe it only appears at night,” Noah suggested.

Before Elara could answer…

A gust of icy wind swept through the forest.

The branches groaned overhead.

Leaves spiraled across the ground.

Then—

A faint golden glow flickered between two ancient oak trees.

The earth trembled ever so slightly.

Slowly…

The bushes began to part on their own.

Roots twisted beneath the soil.

Fern leaves folded away.

Right before their eyes, a narrow dirt path emerged from the shadows.

Neither of them moved.

Neither of them breathed.

“It…” Noah whispered.

“It wasn’t there.”

Elara could only stare.

The photograph had been real.

The path was real.

And somehow…

The forest had just revealed it.

From somewhere deep within the trees came a soft whisper.

Almost too quiet to hear.

“Elara…”

She froze.

“Did you hear that?” she asked.

Noah frowned.

“Hear what?”

“A voice.”

“I didn’t hear anything.”

The whisper came again.

Closer this time.

Gentle.

Patient.

As though it had been waiting years for her to return.

“Come.”

The golden light drifted farther down the hidden trail.

Without thinking, Elara took one step toward it.

Then another.

Noah grabbed her wrist.

“Elara.”

His voice was tense.

“This feels wrong.”

She looked down at the path.

The footprints forming in the soft earth were not hers.

Someone—or something—had walked this trail only moments before.

But whoever it was…

had left no way back.
