Evaluation Day 22/90 — 68 Days Remaining

At 5:56 AM, Luca was already awake.

Tomorrow was September 30.

The original development agreement would expire tomorrow.

The temporary evaluation extension remained active through December 6, but that did not make the review meaningless.

Blackwood would assess whether Luca’s development justified continued investment.

Today was his last full training day before that review.

He sat on the edge of his bed and moved his right shoulder.

The bruising had faded considerably.

The joint still felt stiff at the highest point of the movement, but the pain had dropped to one.

Sofia would probably approve.

Luca stood.

Then he remembered that yesterday she had told him not to turn recovery into another competition.

He stopped himself from testing the shoulder again.

“One.”

He dressed and left the room.

The dining hall was already busy.

Academy players moved between tables carrying breakfast, discussing training groups and the upcoming weekend fixtures.

Luca spotted Elias immediately.

“You’re early,” Elias said.

“So are you.”

“I have standards.”

“You wore two different socks yesterday.”

Elias looked down.

“That was intentional.”

“No, it wasn’t.”

Marcus laughed from across the table.

Noah was reviewing a tactical clip on his tablet.

Ryan arrived shortly afterward.

His calf had improved enough for him to take part in more work, although Victor and Sofia were still keeping him away from full-intensity sprinting.

Ryan sat down.

“Tomorrow.”

Luca nodded.

“Tomorrow.”

Marcus looked between them.

“You two have developed a strange habit of saying one word to each other.”

“It’s efficient,” Noah said without looking up.

Elias pointed at him.

“See?

That’s why nobody invites you to normal conversations.”

Noah finally looked up.

“You’re talking about football at breakfast.”

“We’re footballers.”

“Exactly.”

Luca smiled.

The conversation continued.

For a few minutes, tomorrow didn’t exist.

Then Luca’s phone vibrated.

A message from the academy administration.

Development Review — Wednesday, September 30

Individual Review Window: 2:30 PM–5:00 PM

Location: Development Office

Luca stared at it.

The message did not say whether he had passed.

It didn’t say whether he would receive a contract.

It simply confirmed that the meeting was happening.

He locked the phone.

Tomorrow had a room.

Training began at 8:17 AM.

Victor gathered the players before the warm-up.

“Tomorrow’s review will consider your development over the evaluation period.

Today is still training.”

His gaze moved across the group.

“Do not turn today’s session into a performance for people who aren’t watching.”

Luca knew what he meant.

The staff were watching.

But they needed useful evidence, not desperation.

Victor looked toward Adrian.

“Your group.”

Adrian nodded.

Luca followed him to the right side of the pitch.

Ryan remained with Victor.

Adrian placed five cones along the right flank.

Then he placed two more near the edge of the penalty area.

Luca looked at the setup.

“What are we doing?”

“Acceleration.”

Luca glanced at him.

“Just acceleration?”

“Not exactly.”

Adrian handed him the ball.

“Show me your first three steps.”

Luca stood on the touchline.

Adrian positioned himself several metres ahead.

“On my signal.”

Luca crouched slightly.

“Go.”

He exploded forward.

His first steps were powerful.

Three strides.

Five.

He reached the cone quickly.

Adrian raised his hand.

“Again.”

The second attempt was similar.

The third was slightly slower.

Luca looked toward the stopwatch.

Adrian noticed.

“Don’t chase the number.”

Luca stopped.

“What are we measuring?”

“When you should accelerate.”

Luca frowned.

Adrian moved one cone.

“This time, imagine the fullback is square.”

Luca started.

“Receive.”

A pass came toward him.

Luca controlled it.

The defender stepped forward.

Luca accelerated.

The defender matched him for the first few metres.

Luca slowed.

Adrian stopped the sequence.

“What happened?”

“He recovered.”

“Why?”

“I went too early.”

“Exactly.”

Adrian reset the drill.

“This is what I mean.

Your acceleration isn’t the problem.”

Luca looked at him.

“Then what’s the problem?”

“You don’t always use it at the right moment.”

The next sequence began.

Luca received.

The defender stayed deeper.

Luca carried the ball.

He waited.

The defender stepped.

Luca exploded forward.

This time the defender was late.

Luca reached the attacking cone before him.

Adrian nodded.

“That’s better.”

Luca jogged back.

“Same acceleration.”

“Different timing.”

Adrian pointed at him.

“That’s the difference between having a weapon and knowing when to use it.”

The System appeared at 9:04 AM.

Luca stepped toward the sideline while the other players began another drill.

The interface opened.

[DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVE AVAILABLE.]

Luca read it carefully.

Objective 01 — Acceleration Application

Current Acceleration: 82/100

Current Assessment: Strong

Primary Issue: Application Timing

Objective: Improve the effective use of existing acceleration during right-wing attacking situations.

Luca continued reading.

Target Behaviors:

1.

Delay acceleration until defender commitment is observable.

2.

Use first three steps to create separation rather than accelerating without purpose.

3.

Coordinate acceleration with teammate movement.

4.

Reduce unnecessary high-intensity bursts.

5.

Maintain acceleration quality under controlled fatigue.

Luca looked at the screen.

There was no instruction to make his acceleration magically faster.

No +5 reward. Enjoying the story? Read on at g.com.

No instant improvement.

The objective was about using something he already possessed.

Another line appeared.

[Completion Requirement:]

Demonstrated improvement through verified training and match performance.

Then:

[Reward Condition:]

Development Progress will be recognized only if objective performance improves.

Luca smiled.

“So you don’t make me faster.”

[Correct.]

“You just tell me what I’m doing wrong.”

[Correction: The System identifies observed developmental patterns and provides measurable objectives.]

Luca shook his head.

“Right.”

He looked back toward the pitch.

The answer was almost annoyingly simple.

The System could show him that his acceleration was strong.

Adrian could show him how he wasted it.

Only Luca could learn to change the habit.

He closed the interface.

The next drill became more difficult.

Noah joined Adrian’s group.

Marcus moved into the striker position.

Elias took the left-back role.

A defender was placed in front of Luca.

The exercise simulated a real attack.

No isolated sprint.

No clean starting signal.

The play developed naturally.

Noah received centrally.

Marcus moved toward the near centre-back.

Elias began an overlap.

Luca remained wide.

Noah passed to him.

The defender approached.

Luca accelerated immediately.

Too early.

The defender matched him.

Luca crossed under pressure.

The ball flew beyond Marcus.

Adrian stopped the sequence.

“Again.”

Luca returned to position.

The second attempt began.

Noah received.

Marcus checked toward the ball.

The defender shifted.

Luca stayed wide.

Noah passed.

The defender stepped forward.

Luca waited.

Marcus moved away.

The defender hesitated.

Luca accelerated.

This time, the gap opened.

He reached the edge of the box.

The defender recovered late.

Luca cut inside and played the ball toward Marcus.

Marcus met it first time.

Goal.

Adrian pointed at Luca.

“That’s your objective.”

Luca nodded.

Not the goal.

The timing.

The acceleration had always been there.

The decision about when to spend it had not.

At 10:31 AM, the drill became competitive.

Victor brought Ryan over for the next sequence.

Ryan’s calf was cleared for controlled acceleration, but Sofia had limited him to reduced repetitions.

Victor explained the exercise.

“Three attacking sequences each.”

He looked at Luca and Ryan.

“You’re not competing for a stopwatch.”

Ryan raised an eyebrow.

“Then what are we competing for?”

“Effective decisions.”

The first sequence belonged to Ryan.

He received wide, shifted the defender and delayed his burst until the defender committed.

Clean.

Second sequence.

Luca received.

He accelerated too early.

The defender recovered.

Ryan watched from the opposite station.

Third sequence.

Luca waited.

The defender leaned forward.

Luca exploded into the gap.

The defender couldn’t recover.

Luca crossed low.

Marcus nearly scored.

Victor blew the whistle.

“Better.”

Ryan nodded.

“That one was good.”

Luca looked at him.

“Thanks.”

“Don’t get sentimental.”

The next sequence began.

Ryan pushed off aggressively.

His calf tightened.

He immediately slowed.

Victor stopped the drill.

Sofia was already walking toward him.

“Done.”

Ryan frowned.

“I can continue.”

“No.”

“It’s fine.”

Sofia shook her head.

“You felt it tighten during acceleration.”

Ryan looked frustrated.

“It’s not injured.”

“Then don’t make it injured.”

She pointed toward the recovery area.

“Sit.”

Ryan walked away reluctantly.

Luca watched him go.

The rivalry remained.

So did reality.

A career could be changed by something as small as one bad sprint.

At 12:03 PM, Luca sat with Elias, Marcus and Noah for lunch.

Ryan was at the recovery area across the room.

His calf was wrapped with a compression sleeve.

He looked irritated.

Elias glanced toward him.

“He’s going to hate sitting there.”

Marcus nodded.

“He hates missing anything.”

Noah looked at Luca.

“So do you.”

Luca paused.

“Yeah.”

Noah returned to his food.

“That’s why Sofia keeps stopping both of you.”

Luca smiled.

He had no argument.

Marcus leaned forward.

“So what’s your objective?”

Luca hesitated.

He hadn’t told them about the System.

“Acceleration.”

Elias looked confused.

“You’re already fast.”

“That’s not the point.”

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Timing.”

Luca looked at him.

Marcus shrugged.

“I’ve played striker long enough to know.

Sometimes the fastest player on the pitch isn’t the one who gets away.

It’s the one who waits until the defender commits.”

Luca smiled.

“Exactly.”

Noah looked pleased.

“Then you’re finally learning the useful part.”

Elias pointed his fork at him.

“That sounded almost encouraging.”

“It was.”

“Don’t do it again.”

The afternoon session was less intense.

Sofia had reduced Luca’s workload after the morning acceleration drills.

The shoulder remained stable.

His legs, however, were beginning to feel heavy.

Adrian wanted to see whether Luca could maintain decision quality without repeatedly sprinting.

The System’s objective had included fatigue for a reason.

Luca received on the right.

His first instinct was to accelerate.

He stopped himself.

The defender was too far away.

He carried the ball.

Marcus moved.

Noah shifted.

Elias overlapped.

The defender finally stepped.

Luca accelerated.

One burst.

Not three.

He reached the final third and crossed.

This time the ball found Marcus.

The striker’s header hit the crossbar.

The ball bounced down.

Marcus turned.

“That was close.”

Luca nodded.

Adrian called from behind them.

“Again.”

They reset.

The next attempt was worse.

Luca waited too long.

The defender closed him down.

Possession lost.

He walked back frustrated.

Adrian didn’t criticize immediately.

Instead, he asked, “Why did you wait?”

“I thought I was supposed to.”

“Supposed to what?”

“Wait for commitment.”

Adrian nodded.

“Good.”

Luca frowned.

“Then why was it wrong?”

“Because the defender had already committed.”

Luca looked back.

The replay was obvious.

The defender had shifted his weight forward several seconds earlier.

Luca simply hadn’t recognized it.

Adrian tapped his temple.

“Your acceleration objective isn’t really about your legs.”

Luca understood.

“It’s about reading the moment.”

“Exactly.”

At 4:49 PM, the final sequence ended.

Luca sat on the grass, breathing heavily.

His shoulder was fine.

His legs were tired.

His right calf felt tight from repeated movement, but not painful.

Sofia checked him anyway.

“Any pain?”

“No.”

“Shoulder?”

“One.”

“Calf?”

“Tired.”

She pressed lightly.

“Normal fatigue.”

Luca nodded.

She stood.

“You’re done.”

He looked toward Adrian.

Adrian smiled.

“Listen to the medical staff.”

Luca laughed.

“Everyone says that.”

“Because you keep needing to hear it.”

At 5:31 PM, Victor called the players together.

“Tomorrow’s review remains scheduled.”

Nobody spoke.

“Your reports will include today’s work.”

Luca listened carefully.

Victor looked toward him.

“Today showed improvement.”

Luca felt a small spark of satisfaction.

Then Victor continued.

“It also showed inconsistency.”

The spark settled.

That sounded more like Victor.

“One good sequence doesn’t change a development profile.”

Luca nodded.

“But repeated improvement can.”

Victor dismissed them.

That sentence mattered.

Tomorrow’s meeting would not be decided by one cross or one acceleration.

It would be decided by the accumulation of evidence.

Twenty-two evaluation days.

Training sessions.

Match simulations.

Mistakes.

Improvements.

Bruises.

Recovery.

Right-wing experiments.

Competition with Ryan.

Coaching from Adrian.

Medical restrictions from Sofia.

And the work Luca had done when nobody was watching.

All of it was becoming part of the record.

Luca left the academy at 6:14 PM.

He walked slowly.

The evening air was cooler after yesterday’s rain.

His phone buzzed.

Aurora.

How did training go?

Luca typed back.

Better.

Still inconsistent.

Her response came quickly.

That sounds like progress.

He smiled.

Tomorrow is the review.

A few seconds passed.

I know.

Then:

Whatever happens, come home afterward.

Luca stopped walking.

The message was simple.

It didn’t promise that everything would be fine.

It didn’t tell him Blackwood would keep him.

It didn’t tell him he would become a professional.

It simply gave him somewhere to return to after the decision.

Luca typed:

I will.

At 9:17 PM, he sat at his desk.

The System appeared.

[OBJECTIVE 01 — ACCELERATION APPLICATION]

Current Status: In Progress

Observed Improvement: Timing awareness — Early

Execution Consistency: Developing

Fatigue Application: Incomplete

Objective Completion: Not Yet Verified

Luca stared at the final line.

He smiled.

Not yet.

That was honest.

He didn’t need a reward tonight.

He needed another training day.

The System displayed one final message.

[Reminder: Development Progress requires verified real-world improvement.]

Luca closed it.

Outside his window, the academy lights were still visible.

Tomorrow was Wednesday.

September 30.

Evaluation Day 23/90.

67 days would remain in the ninety-day evaluation period.

The original development agreement would expire.

The temporary evaluation extension would continue.

And at 2:30 PM, Luca would sit across from the people deciding whether his trajectory was worth further investment.

He wasn’t walking into that room as a finished player.

He wasn’t even walking in as Blackwood’s best right winger.

Ryan was still ahead.

His own numbers still showed weaknesses.

His shoulder was still recovering.

His acceleration objective was still incomplete.

But for the first time, Luca understood something important about the System.

It could identify what he already had.

It could point toward what needed work.

It could measure whether he was changing.

But it could not run the next sprint for him.

Luca closed his laptop.

Tomorrow, he would face the review with the same body, the same unfinished development, and the same responsibility.

Whatever Blackwood decided, the work would still belong to him.
