The distant wail of the perimeter sirens ripped through the subterranean air, rising from a low, marrow-shaking drone into a shrieking crescendo that rattled the cracked, reinforced glass of the high observation windows.

Outside, the artificial sky above the capital flickered from a sterile, pale blue to an angry, bruised violet—the automated atmospheric warning cast by the scrubbers as ash and radioactive particulate choked the outer filtration rings. The world was dying, breath by breath, suffocating beneath the weight of its own nuclear sins.

Gary didn't flinch. He didn't look up at the flashing ceiling lights. His gaze remained locked on the tactical holomap, where a dense, shifting tide of pulsing crimson blips had just materialized beyond the pulverized skeleton of the outer wall.

“They’re early,” Gary muttered, his voice dropping into the flat, dangerous register of a man who lived exclusively in the kill-zone. “The migration patterns collapsed. The frost-crawlers aren't waiting for winter. The cold is driving them mad.”

“They aren't just migrating, Father,” Ramona said, leaning closer to the glowing blue light grid, her eyes tracking the precise, unnatural vector of the approaching swarm. In her first life, she would have cowered at the sheer scale of the approaching doom. Now, her mind moved with clinical coldness, parsing through the brutal survival data she had memorized from the ashes of her past life. “Look at the spread. This isn't a natural pack. Someone triggered the seismic resonance beacons near the old sub-station.”

Lina’s expression darkened instantly, her fingers flying across her holopad terminal as she accessed the classified security logs of the inner districts. “The parliamentary guard. Those arrogant fools overrode the outer perimeter protocols to run illegal black-market salvage operations in the dead zones. They cracked the containment seals.”

“And now the horde is tunneling straight down the primary access corridor,” Ramona said, her hand resting firmly on the heavy-caliber sidearm strapped to her thigh. “Right toward the unprepared parliamentary checkpoints.”

Gary let out a sharp, bark-like laugh that held zero humor—only the bleak irony of the end times. “They wanted our munitions? Let's see how those politicians fare when the monsters they invited come gnawing through their obsidian gates.”

“No,” Ramona interrupted, her voice cutting through the oppressive room with an authority that made both parents pause. She straightened up, her eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light as the ceiling vibrated from the distant impact of a breaching charge. “We don’t let them break the inner ring yet. If the outer gates fall tonight without a defense, the whole sector collapses into a chaotic meat-grinder before we’re ready to seize total control. We intercept them at the gorge, and we make the high council watch us bleed them dry.”

Lina stared at her daughter, a lethal, absolute smirk curving her lips. “And the council guards?”

“They hold the line or they become fertilizer,” Ramona said, turning toward the heavy blast doors as the lights flickered and died, plunging the bunker into emergency crimson illumination. “Hand me a tactical rifle. It's time to show the capital what the apocalypse actually looks like.”
