The leader lowered his heavy weapon as the colossal beast began tearing itself free from the rubble, its massive claws gouging deep trenches into the ancient stone floor.

Ramona watched him with narrowed, calculating eyes, her heart hammering a frantic, rhythmic beat against her ribs. Adrenaline flooded her veins, sharp and cold, sharpening her focus until the chaos of the cavern seemed to slow down. She noticed a subtle shift in his posture; his attention wasn't on the waking nightmare anymore. It was tracking the faint, rhythmic hum of a device mounted beneath his wrist guard.

A shimmering blue teleportation field began to fracture the air behind him.

He's leaving.

Ramona didn't hesitate. Every muscle in her body coiled and snapped forward.

She fired first.

The rifle cracked like thunder through the damp chamber, the deafening concussive blast vibrating in her teeth. The leader twisted aside with unnatural reflexes, but he was a fraction too slow; the heavy-caliber round slammed directly into the teleportation device, sending a blinding shower of electrical sparks across his armor and violently destabilizing the forming field.

His head snapped toward her, the dark visor flashing with sudden menace.

Ramona was already moving, closing the distance across the broken ground before he could fully recover. With a swift flick of her wrist, her signature blade, the Fang, slipped from its sheath, catching the pale, dim light of the cavern. She drove the weapon straight toward the vulnerable gap beneath his helmet, forcing him to desperately intercept with his crackling black energy blade.

The metal-on-metal collision sent a violent, bone-jarring shock straight up Ramona's arms, but she didn't flinch.

“You really thought I'd let you walk away?” Ramona said, her voice laced with a cold, unforgiving fury.

With a brutal grunt, the leader shoved her backward.

Instead of fighting the push, Ramona used the momentum to pivot gracefully, kicking off the shattered wreckage of the transport to launch a secondary assault from his flank. Her Fang struck his torso armor twice in rapid succession, scoring deep white gouges, before his energy blade caught her third attack with a hiss of superheated air.

He was fast. Terrifyingly fast. Too fast for an ordinary commander.

Sensing she couldn't win a battle of raw strength, Ramona changed tactics in a heartbeat. Dropping her stance, she aimed low, lunging directly for his damaged wrist guard.

The Fang sliced cleanly through the scorched outer plating of his gauntlet.

The teleportation device sparked violently, stuttering as the energy field flickered like a dying bulb.

For the first time, the leader's absolute composure cracked, a hint of genuine strain bleeding into his digital voice. “You're making a mistake.”

“No,” Ramona said, her eyes locked on his visor as she pressed the attack. “I'm making sure you can't report anything.”

She lunged forward. The leader blocked her first strike, expertly redirected the second, and intercepted her wrist just inches before the Fang could reach his throat. For a breathless second, they were locked together in a deadly stalemate, their faces only inches apart, the heat of their exertion radiating in the cold air.

Then, his gaze flickered past her toward the creature.

Ramona followed his look.

The monster had stopped thrashing. It was dead still, its massive, primordial head turning slowly to fix its glowing red eyes squarely on them.

The leader abruptly released her and threw himself backward.

Ramona lunged to press her advantage, but he slammed his broken gauntlet into the stone floor.

A devastating pulse of black energy detonated outward.

Ramona threw herself behind the thick steel frame of the transport wreckage just as the shockwave tore across the chamber. Concrete vaporized, metal twisted like paper, and the colossal creature staggered beneath the brutal impact, letting out a ground-shaking groan.

When Ramona dared to look up, the leader was already standing inside the flickering, unstable teleportation field.

She instantly raised her rifle, her finger tightening on the trigger.

He smiled beneath the fractured edge of his helmet, a chilling expression of dark satisfaction.

“You've confirmed everything I needed to know.”

Ramona fired.

The heavy round passed straight through the dissolving field a fraction of a second before it collapsed completely.

The leader vanished into nothingness.

Ramona lowered the rifle slowly, her chest heaving as she stared at the empty, smoking space where he had stood. A bitter taste of frustration coated her tongue. She hadn't stopped him from escaping.

Yet, a fierce, defiant warmth bloomed in her chest. She had damaged his equipment, forced his hand, and made it unequivocally clear that she would not go quietly into the night.

Behind her, the creature released a low, earth-shattering, grinding roar that vibrated straight through her boots.

Ramona turned slowly to face it.

Its burning red gaze locked onto hers with predatory intent, echoing the leader's parting words in her mind: The weapon is ready.

She tightened her grip around the hilt of the Fang, her knuckles turning white.

“He can call me whatever he wants,” Ramona whispered into the dark, her voice steady and resolute. “But I'm nobody's weapon.”

The creature lunged forward, earth and stone exploding in its wake.

Ramona didn't retreat. She raised her rifle, broke into a sprint, and charged straight toward it.

If the Black Division wanted to use her as bait, they had just made a fatal miscalculation. They had put the ultimate weapon directly within reach of its target.

The impact was catastrophic.

When the leviathan slammed forward, the shockwave of its advance threw Ramona off her feet, sending her skidding across the fractured stone. The breath rushed from her lungs in a sharp gasp, and pain flared across her ribs where the earlier wound throbbed with white-hot intensity.

Dust and pulverized concrete choked the air, reducing the cavern to a suffocating haze of gray.

Through the stinging grit, the massive creature loomed over her like a mountain of living shadow. Its jaws parted, venting a superheated hiss that melted the surrounding rubble.

Ramona forced herself up onto one knee, ignoring the agonizing pull of her muscles. She wiped the blood from her forehead, her gaze fixed entirely on the beast. The Black Division thought they had engineered a masterpiece of destruction, a pawn they could point and click to wipe out their enemies. They thought she was just the bait.

They had forgotten one fundamental truth about living twice.

She wasn't a pawn. She was the one who survived the apocalypse.

Lina’s voice suddenly cut through the ringing in her ears from the upper deck of the transport, firing blind to cover her. “Ramona! Get out of there!”

Instead of retreating, Ramona gripped the hilt of the Fang tighter in one hand and leveled her rifle with the other. A grim, iron resolve settled over her features.

Let them watch through their encrypted feeds. Let them monitor every heartbeat and calculate every variable.

“You wanted a weapon?” Ramona muttered, her voice cutting cleanly through the monster's roar. “Let's see how well you handle a broken one.”

With a fierce cry, she pushed off the ground, abandoning cover entirely. She charged directly toward the towering terror, sprinting right into the jaws of the trap they had laid for her.

As the cavern walls shook and the ceiling began to fracture overhead, Ramona leaped into the fray.

The hunt was no longer theirs. It was hers.
