The floor fell away.

Ramona didn't blink. Her heart hammered a frantic, desperate rhythm against her ribs as she lunged forward, grabbing Lina’s tactical vest with white-knuckled force. She yanked her back an inch just as a massive slab of reinforced concrete sheared off the edge and plunged into the roaring abyss below. The air turned instantly electric, tasting of bitter copper and charged ions, thick and heavy enough to choke on.

Across the chasm, the Gate’s ancient glyphs blazed with blinding white fire, casting long, skeletal shadows against the cavern walls like jagged teeth.Full novel: The General's daughter — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

And something was crossing the threshold.

It wasn't a shadow. It was a density—a mass so heavy it warped the light around it, bending the air like shimmering heat over hot asphalt. A colossal limb, armored in segmented plates of black, non-reflective composite, slammed against the inner rim of the ring with a bone-rattling thud.

Gary raised his scattergun, his hands visibly shaking, his breath coming in ragged, terrified gasps as his tactical HUD flickered and died into static. "What is that?" he choked out, his voice cracking with sheer disbelief. "What the hell is coming through?!"

"An extinction event," Ramona said, her voice cutting through the mechanical shriek of the collapsing facility like a blade, though her own stomach churned with cold dread.

She didn't wait for them to process the horror. She ripped Fang from the deck with a fierce, protective snarl, the steel singing as she sprinted toward the secondary maintenance catwalk hanging precariously over the drop.

"Ramona! Where are you going?" Lina shouted over the deafening din, her face pale with terror as she fired a blind, panicked burst into the lower shadows where a swarm of smaller, skittering drones dropped from the ceiling infrastructure.

"To cut the main feed!" Ramona yelled back over her shoulder, her muscles screaming as she ducked a slashing metallic tentacle that swept dangerously across the walkway. "The Gate is feeding on the facility’s auxiliary grid! If we don't kill the power source in the sub-basement, that thing won't just step through—it'll drag this entire valley down with it!"

She vaulted over a ruptured steam pipe, her boots slamming hard onto the grating. Behind her, Gary and Lina laid down a desperate wall of suppression fire, the muzzle flashes strobing frantically against the dark like lightning in a dead sky.

Down in the sub-basement, the heat was suffocating, thick with the sharp snore of overworked turbines and the acrid stench of melting wiring.

Alarms wailed in a rhythmic, deafening cadence—a dying pulse of red emergency strobes cutting through the choking smoke. At the center of the pit stood the primary transformer core, a humming monolith of copper and glass vibrating so violently it looked liquid.

Joshua’s voice hissed through a blown-out speaker overhead, distorted and frantic, bleeding with raw, unfiltered panic.

“You’re burning history, Ramona! That Gate is humanity’s only bridge off this dying rock! You destroy this, and we stay in the dark forever!”

"We stayed in the dark a long time ago, Joshua!" Ramona shouted back, her voice echoing off the concrete walls with burning defiance as she drove the pommel of Fang straight into the primary glass housing of the transformer.

The glass cracked, spiderwebbing outward in a web of blinding blue electric arcs.

Above her, a deafening roar shook the facility's foundations, a tectonic groan that rattled her teeth. The massive entity at the Gate had cleared the threshold. The sheer pressure of its presence blew out every remaining window in the observation deck, sending a hurricane of shattered glass and ash raining down into the pit around her.

Ramona gripped Fang with both hands, her muscles burning with white-hot agony, and drove the blade straight into the exposed core.

A blinding flash of white energy swallowed the room.

The sound died instantly—replaced by a total, vacuum-sealed silence. The frantic red strobes snapped off. The subterranean hum of the ancient network sputtered, coughed, and flatlined.

Through the cracked overhead grating, Ramona looked up, chest heaving in the sudden, oppressive gloom.

The colossal white light of the Gate flickered once, twice, and then violently imploded, collapsing inward into a tiny, smoking point of black ash before vanishing into nothingness.

The heavy, suffocating weight on her chest lifted, replaced by a profound, trembling exhaustion.

Above, in the main cavern, the silence stretched, heavy and profound, broken only by the steady, rhythmic dripping of water from a ruptured pipe overhead and the shallow, ragged breathing of her team.

Gary’s voice crackled softly over the comms, breathless and trembling with lingering shock. "...Did it work?"

Ramona pulled Fang free from the dead, smoking core, her breathing heavy in the dark as she wiped a streak of soot and sweat from her cheek. She looked up toward the fractured, silent sky.

"Yeah," she whispered into the empty air, a grim, hard-won resolve settling over her features. "It worked."

She turned toward the service tunnel leading deeper into the dark, the true heart of the ruins waiting just beyond the threshold, her jaw set tight.

"Now let's go find Joshua."
