Chapter 5: The First Bug Hunt

THE GLITCHED MONARCH

The biting winter wind howled through the perfectly circular tunnel, carrying the scent of pine and fresh snow into the ruined cellar. Leo stood slowly, brushing stone dust and dry straw from his worn, oversized trousers. His body felt lighter, stronger. The system notifications still hovered at the edge of his vision, confirming his transition to Level 2.

"One shot, one level up," Leo murmured, looking down at his hands.

The raw, azure energy hummed beneath his skin, fueled by the persistent is_sleeping = TRUE loop that was continuously overcharging his broken core. He was a walking anomaly. If anyone from the Vermis estate came down to check on the noise, they wouldn't just find a dead bastard—they would find a walking security breach.

He had to move, and he had to do it now.

Leo stepped over the scorched stone edges of the tunnel. The path he had blasted bypassed the locked oak door, the iron bolts, and the guards entirely. It led directly out into the dark, tangled expanse of the **Whispering Woods**—a dangerous forest that bordered the Vermis territory, notorious for being infested with low-to-mid-tier magical beasts.

To any sane mortal, fleeing into the Whispering Woods in thin clothes during a blizzard was suicide. To Leo, it was a target-rich debugging environment.

He slipped through the opening, his boots sinking into the deep, powdery snow. The cold tried to bite at his skin again, but the massive, overflowing mana buffer acted like a thermal shield, radiating a comfortable, invisible warmth that melted the snowflakes before they could even touch his collar.

"I need a weapon," Leo said to himself, looking around the dark treeline. "And I need to optimize this diagnostic tool."

Relying on his Sandbox Engine, he opened the local object directory. In a standard RPG, every physical object has an item ID and a physics collision box. He bent down, picking up a heavy, jagged branch of frozen oak that had fallen from a nearby tree.

```
[Object Detected: Frozen Oak Branch]
-> Mass: 1.2kg
-> Durability: 15/15
-> Weapon Class: Improvised Club (Damage: 1-3)
```

"Garbage stats," Leo muttered. "But what if I edit the collision physics?"

He brought up the raw variable string for the branch. While he couldn't change its base item ID without triggering a server-side syntax error, he *could* manipulate the object's local friction and hardness values through the sandbox client. He located the variable labeled Friction_Coefficient and dialed it down to 0.0. Then, he located Structural_Density and set it to the maximum allowable local integer.

The wooden branch didn't change its appearance, but the moment Leo gripped it, he felt the difference. It was impossibly smooth, completely friction-free except where his own system-registered hand gripped it, and as heavy and solid as forged steel.

Suddenly, the snow behind him crunched.

Leo spun around, holding his modified branch. Out from the shadow of a massive pine tree, three more pairs of glowing, crimson eyes materialized.

```
[Hostile Detected: Frost-Fanged Venom Rat (LVL 3)] x3[span_8](start_span)[span_8](end_span)[span_9](start_span)[span_9](end_span)
[HP: 60/60][span_10](start_span)[span_10](end_span)
```

The beasts sniffed the air, smelling the lingering trace of their vaporized packmate on Leo. They hissed in unison, their icy fangs dripping with green, corrosive poison that sizzled against the cold snow.

"One was a test," Leo said, his fingers flying across his floating Developer UI, bringing up the target reticles for his Coordinate_Output_Test tool. "Three is a stress test. Let's see how the engine handles multi-threading."

He divided his target reticle into three separate coordinates, allocating exactly one thousand mana to each point. It was a lower payload than the blast that had destroyed the cellar, but it was more than enough to handle sixty-HP targets without causing a massive, terrain-deforming explosion.

The three rats lunged simultaneously, leaping through the air like frozen daggers aimed directly at his throat.

"Execute," Leo whispered.

```
[Executing Multi-Thread Output Test...]
[Mana Expended: 3,000]
```

Three silent, pencil-thin needles of blinding blue light snapped into existence, impaling the beasts mid-flight. There was no thunderous boom this time—only the sharp *pop* of displaced air. The three venom rats frozen in mid-air instantly de-rezzed into shimmering clouds of blue pixels, their physical assets completely purged from the local coordinate map.

```
[Hostiles Neutralized: Frost-Fanged Venom Rat x3]
[Experience Gained: 450]
[Congratulations! You have reached Level 3.]
[Attributes Increased: Vitality +1, Agility +1, Strength +1]
```

Leo let out a breath, watching his level bar fill. "Efficient. Silent. Scalable."

He looked deeper into the dark forest, where the howling wind carried the distant, far more menacing roars of higher-tier beasts. Back at the manor, the alarms would surely be raised by morning once the guards discovered the smoking hole in the cellar wall. He had a few hours at most to build his strength, find shelter, and prepare for the inevitable hunt.

"The tutorial is over," Leo smiled, gripping his unbreakable oak branch as he vanished into the snowy depths of the Whispering Woods. "Now, let's go find some bigger bugs."
