The heavy iron door at the top of the transit stairwell gave way with a low, metallic groan as Neak shoved it open. Cold night air rushed down to meet us, crisp and sharp, burning away the lingering stench of sulfur, ozone, and wet concrete that had clung to our clothes in the safehouse basement.

One by one, we emerged onto the elevated overlook above the old transit yard, looking out over the familiar, fractured silhouette of Brooklyn.

Below us, the borough stretched into the moonlit haze—quiet, watchful, and scarred by the remnants of the dark forces that had broken through the old world's seams. Beyond the row houses and empty industrial lots, the distant Manhattan skyline stood like faint, dark teeth against the night sky. But up here, under the open New York air, the breath in our lungs felt clear for the first time in hours.Full novel: The Golden Lotus — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Neak stepped out first, his staff held horizontally as his eyes swept the perimeter. Nimol, Veicha, and Vannak fan-spread into our defensive guard, their stances automatic, perfectly executing the Boran spacing Grandpa Kiri had drilled into us since childhood.

In the center of our circle, Grandpa Kiri helped Grandma Dary over the final concrete step. He didn't let go of her hand, his thumb resting gently against her wrist, feeling her steady pulse. Dary took a deep breath of the city air, her shoulders settling as she looked around at the six of us—her children's children, standing strong, armed, and unharmed.

"Clear," Neak reported softly, stepping back toward the group. "No sign of the Hollowkin on the avenue. The light from the Lotus must have driven them completely out of this block."

All eyes turned to my hands. The Golden Lotus sat quietly in my palms, its petals gleaming with a soft, warm amber light. The icy pressure that had gripped my ribcage in the basement was gone, replaced by a gentle, steady hum that felt almost like a second heartbeat. It was no longer a mysterious weapon or a cursed relic of hidden trauma; it was a link to our bloodline's past, fully awakened and aligned with our family's strength.

"It's quiet," Vannak whispered, looking up from his low guard stance. "So... what do we do now? The safehouse basement is compromised."

"We head toward the secondary sanctuary near the Navy Yard," Grandpa Kiri said, his deep voice cutting through the chill wind. He gestured toward the distant northern stretch of the borough. "I built that hideout years ago, back when we first arrived in New York and started seeing the subtle signs. It has reinforced perimeter walls and enough supplies to hold out until we map the rift movements."

"And the dark entities?" Nimol asked, tightening her grip on her iron pipe. "If the Hollowkin feared what was behind that door, will more of them come after the Lotus now that it's awakened?"

"Let them come," Grandma Dary said. Her voice had reclaimed its familiar, unyielding steel, though the warmth in her eyes as she looked at us was undeniable. "When we fled the Khmer Rouge fifty years ago, we had nothing—no weapons, no shelter, and no knowledge of what lay ahead when we first stepped foot in America. Today, we have our land's ancient art, we have the Lotus, and most importantly, we have each other."

She looked at me, giving a small, knowing nod.

"You carried the weight of the past down there," Grandma continued softly. "Now, you lead the way forward."

I looked at my siblings and cousins—Neak with his calm command, Nimol with her fierce resolve, Veicha and Vannak standing ready—and then back at my grandparents, the unbreakable pillars who had dragged our lineage through fire so we could stand here tonight.

"Navy Yard sanctuary," I said, lifting the Golden Lotus so its light cast a clear, golden path along the dark Brooklyn street ahead. "We move as one."

We formed up into stride—Neak taking the point, my cousins and sister guarding the flanks, and me walking beside Grandma and Grandpa as the Golden Lotus illuminated the road ahead into the unknown.
