The mechanical constructs sputtered, their exposed copper gears grinding into stillness before collapsing into heaps of inert bronze and stone. Gray dust settled over the floor flags, drifting in the harsh, pale light of the wall braziers.

Nobody broke the Five-Point Star.

And at its exact center stood me—the sole bearer of the golden lotus, the living linchpin around whom the entire court turned.Full novel: The Golden Lotus — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

“Call it,” I commanded, my voice ringing clear and steady through the cavern.

Vichea didn't shift his feet, but his eyes swept the far wall of the chamber, tracking the masonry where the constructs had emerged. “Clear. No secondary movement. The floor’s resonance has settled around you.”

“Vannak?” Nimol asked without turning her head, her hand resting firmly on the back of his collar.

“I’m alive,” Vannak mumbled from his low crouch at my left pivot. “My legs feel like wet noodles, but as long as the lotus holds, I’m not moving.”

“Good,” Grandma said from behind us. Her voice was quiet, filled with a fierce, quiet pride. “Stand down. The Heart has secured the room.”

As one unit, my family relaxed their stances, stepping back just enough to give me room, yet remaining anchored around me like iron shields. Neak brought his arms down, shaking out his bruised knuckles. Nimol released Vannak, helping him stand while Vichea walked forward, kicking a chunk of bronze gear out of his path to inspect the far wall.

In the center of the stone face sat a simple iron archway. Beyond it lay a natural limestone tunnel slanting upward, where a cool, fresh breeze swept down, carrying the scent of damp morning leaves and river pine.

Vichea reached the arch, running his fingers along the frame. “No mechanisms. The lotus cleared the path.”

I lifted my hand, watching the warm, golden light thread through my fingers. The lotus at my throat throbbed softly—not with the dark, suffocating weight of the past, but with an ancient, radiant pulse that belonged entirely to me. Passed down through generations, it had finally found its true master.

Grandma stepped up beside me, looking down at the brilliant aura glowing against my skin.

“The court believed power belonged to whoever was strongest, whoever could force the lineage to obey,” she said softly, her eyes shining in the golden light. “They were fools. The lotus was never meant to be chained or feared. It was waiting for someone who could carry it for the sake of others.”

She reached out, her fingers gently brushing my shoulder.

“It chose you. And today, you proved why.”

Neak wiped the dried blood from his brow, a crooked, proud smile touching his lips. “Not bad for the youngest. I guess that means you’re leading the drills tomorrow?”

Nimol laughed, a bright, clear sound that shattered the remaining gloom of the vault. “Don't give her ideas, Neak. She’ll have us doing laps until midnight.”

“I just might,” I said, letting a small grin break through my exhaustion.

With a gentle breath, I drew the golden light back into my chest. The radiance settled at my throat, resting as a quiet, steady flame beneath my skin.

We walked into the archway together. My family flanked me on all sides—Neak at the apex, Nimol and Vichea holding the wings, Vannak at my hip, and Grandma watching over us all. But as we climbed the sloped dirt path toward the morning sun, the golden lotus inside me burned warm and unbroken, guiding our way out of the dark.
