Chapter 13: The Drowned Throne

The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

The massive, black steel doors loomed before the Vagabond like a monument to a forgotten apocalypse. Standing fifty feet tall, the unyielding cold metal was bound by rusted iron chains so thick they could anchor a warship. In the dead center, exactly at eye level, was the keyhole—a hollow, weeping skull cast in dark, porous iron.

The Vagabond stood in the silent antechamber, the dead Player Killer’s blood still cooling on the cracked stone floor behind him. He raised his right hand, the fused Key of the Sunken Sovereign resting heavily in his palm. The metal was unnaturally cold, leaching the warmth from his skin.

He didn't hesitate. In the Great Land, hesitation was the cousin of death. He thrust the heavy, jagged key into the skull's gaping mouth.

It fit perfectly.

With a deep, guttural grind that vibrated through the floorboards, traveled up the Vagabond’s leather boots, and rattled his very bones, he turned the key.

CLANG.

The sound was deafening, a physical blow to the eardrums. Deep within the steel door, ancient, neglected gears that hadn't moved in centuries violently shrieked to life, tearing through centuries of rust and calcification. The massive iron chains holding the door shut suddenly went slack, falling to the stone floor with a thunderous, echoing crash.

Slowly, agonizingly, the colossal doors began to open inward.

A wave of freezing, suffocating fog rolled out from the darkness beyond. It wasn't just cold; it was oppressive. It carried a smell so foul it made the Vagabond’s eyes water—the stench of ancient, stagnant brine, rotting seaweed, and the unmistakable, metallic tang of concentrated dark magic.

The Vagabond unhooked the Magic Book from his hip. As soon as the creeping fog touched the petrified leather binding, the pages flew open on their own accord. The pale blue, glowing ink flashed with an urgent, rapid warning, illuminating his sharp features in the gloom.

══════════════════════ WARNING ══════════════════════

REGIONAL BOSS DOMAIN ENTERED.

Location: The Drowned Throne.

Restriction: The doors will seal upon entry. No escape until victory or death.

Environmental Hazard: Abyssal Water (Limits mobility, drains [Stamina] by 15% per minute of submersion).

"A death trap," the Vagabond muttered, his voice devoid of emotion, a stark contrast to the racing of his heart.

He slid the book back onto his hip, gripped his Whisperer's Recurve bow, and stepped through the fog. Shadow, the Royal Beast pup, followed closely. The wolf's mismatched eyes—one molten gold, one abyssal violet—glowed like twin beacons in the mist, its body tense, low to the ground, sensing the overwhelming malice in the air.

As they crossed the threshold, the massive steel doors slammed shut behind them with a booming, final THUD. The heavy locks engaged automatically with a sickening click. They were sealed inside.

The Vagabond raised his bow, utilizing the passive [Perception] boost from his Weeping Willow ring to pierce the gloom.

He was standing on a broken, narrow stone ledge overlooking a vast, subterranean lake. It wasn't just a room; it was a flooded, ruined colosseum. Massive, cracked pillars rose from the black, stagnant water to support a cavernous ceiling hundreds of feet above, lost in the shadows. The only illumination came from clusters of sickly blue, bioluminescent coral clinging to the ruined architecture, casting long, wavering shadows across the surface of the water.

Scattered across the lake were several large, flat pieces of debris—collapsed pillars, the stone heads of forgotten statues, and floating, algae-covered platforms.

Then, the water began to boil.

In the dead center of the subterranean lake, a massive whirlpool formed. The dark water churned violently, glowing with a deep, toxic purple light from beneath.

Thrum. Thrum. Thrum.

A heartbeat. So loud and powerful that it vibrated the stone ledge beneath the Vagabond’s boots, syncing uncomfortably with his own pulse.

From the center of the vortex, a figure rose, water cascading from its colossal frame like a dark waterfall.

It was horrifying. A tragedy of the First Kingdom twisted by centuries of dark magic and isolation. The Sunken Sovereign was a fifteen-foot-tall monstrosity. It had once been a human king, a proud ruler of a forgotten era, but now its body was fused with aquatic horrors. Thick, jagged barnacles and hardened black coral grew organically through its heavy, tarnished gold plate armor. Its face was entirely hidden behind a rusted crown shaped like a brutal iron cage, from which long, wet strands of rotting white hair hung down like dead kelp.

In its massive right hand, it dragged a colossal weapon—a greatsword so heavy, wide, and rusted it looked like a jagged slab of iron, fused intimately with the skeletal spine of some extinct deep-sea leviathan.

The Magic Book vibrated violently on the Vagabond's hip, the heat of the warning bleeding through his leather armor.

Stolen story; please report.

══════════════════════ ENTITY ANALYSIS ══════════════════════

Entity: King Aethelgard, The Sunken Sovereign.

Threat Level: Lethal (Beyond Current Player Parameters).

Traits:

- Indomitable Armor (Immune to low and mid-tier physical piercing).

- Abyssal Strength (Massive blunt force and area-of-effect damage).

- Water Manipulation.

The Sovereign turned its caged head slowly toward the Vagabond. Within the dark, rusted visor, two piercing, blood-red lights ignited, burning with a centuries-old, unquenchable hatred for the living.

With a roar that sounded like crushing deep-sea pressure, a sound that forced the Vagabond to grit his teeth against the sheer acoustic pain, the Sovereign raised the colossal greatsword with one hand and slammed it down into the black water.

The Vagabond’s mind raced with terrifying clarity. In the Great Land, a mercenary who let adrenaline override logic was a dead mercenary. He had a [18 DEX] stat, granting him incredible agility and reaction time, but his raw damage output was practically non-existent against an entity of this magnitude.

He needed data. He needed to test the absolute limits of the enemy’s defense before committing to a strategy.

He glanced at his quiver. Twenty-five iron-tipped arrows. In this cursed world, ammunition was not a regenerating resource. It was painfully physical. If he fired an arrow and it struck unyielding stone or impenetrable magical metal, the iron tip would shatter, and the wooden shaft would splinter into uselessness. If it missed and sank into the abyssal water, it was gone forever. Every draw of the bowstring was a permanent sacrifice of his limited arsenal.

He had to know if the gold armor was as impenetrable as the system claimed.

He nocked an arrow, drawing the heavy composite string of the Whisperer's Recurve back to his cheek in one fluid, practiced motion. He exhaled slowly, watching the giant through the grayscale clarity of his magic ring, aiming for the center mass of the tarnished gold breastplate.

Twang!

The heavy bow sang, sending the iron-tipped shaft flying with lethal, whistling velocity. It crossed the distance in a fraction of a second.

SNAP.

The sound was devastatingly conclusive. The arrow struck the center of the Sovereign's chest and instantly shattered into a dozen useless wooden splinters. The heavy iron tip flattened and broke off, sinking harmlessly into the dark water. The giant didn't even flinch. It hadn't even registered the impact.

The Vagabond’s blood ran cold. Twenty-four arrows left. And a chilling realization settled over him: he possessed absolutely nothing in his current arsenal capable of harming this creature.

Enraged by the audacity of the intruder, the Sovereign surged forward. Despite its massive size, it waded through the deep water with terrifying, unnatural speed, closing the distance to the Vagabond's ledge in seconds. It raised the skeletal greatsword horizontally, the rusted metal glowing with purple energy, preparing a sweeping cleave designed to obliterate the ledge and the mercenary upon it.

"Shadow, scatter!" the Vagabond commanded, his voice sharp.

He didn't try to block. He didn't try to shoot again. He abandoned his position entirely.

Using the full explosive power of his [18 DEX], the Vagabond sprinted to the edge of the stone platform and launched himself into the air, diving out and away from the incoming strike.

BOOOOOOM!

The colossal greatsword smashed into the stone ledge exactly where the Vagabond had been standing a millisecond prior. The impact was apocalyptic. The solid granite shattered into thousands of jagged shrapnel pieces, launching a shockwave of dust and dark water into the air.

The Vagabond hit the freezing black water of the subterranean lake.

The cold was an instant, physical assault. It felt like a thousand icy needles piercing his leather armor, sinking directly into his muscles. The system warning hadn't lied. The moment he was submerged, a heavy, suffocating lethargy began to creep into his limbs. His [Stamina] was draining rapidly, his muscles burning as they fought against the unnatural, magical chill of the water.

He breached the surface, gasping for the foul, brine-tasting air. His wet leather armor now weighed twice as much, dragging him down.

Through the splashing water and the dust of the shattered ledge, he saw the Sovereign pulling its massive sword from the rubble, its red eyes scanning the lake for its prey.

I can't fight this, the Vagabond realized, the truth sharp and unforgiving. This isn't a duel. This is a hunt. And I am the prey.

He spotted a massive, collapsed stone pillar roughly fifty yards away, its broken top jutting out of the water, creating a small, shadowed alcove against the cavern wall.

He didn't swim above the water where he could be seen. He took a deep, agonizing breath, diving below the surface of the black lake. The water was murky, filled with floating debris and rotting algae. He swam with desperate, powerful strokes, his lungs burning, his stamina depleting with terrifying speed. Every muscle in his body screamed in protest against the freezing temperature.

He broke the surface behind the collapsed pillar, silently gasping for air, pressing his back flat against the cold, wet stone.

He looked around frantically. A faint splash to his left revealed Shadow. The wolf pup, relying on its innate Royal Beast instincts, paddled silently through the water, its dark fur blending perfectly with the shadows. Shadow reached the pillar and carefully climbed onto a small, submerged outcropping, its body shivering slightly, eyes wide and fixed on the Vagabond.

"Quiet," the Vagabond breathed, pressing a finger to his own lips.

He closed his eyes, consciously slowing his racing heart, forcing his breathing to become shallow and silent. He activated the passive stealth techniques he had learned during his grueling mercenary training—minimizing his physical presence, blending his aura with the surrounding environment.

Thrum... Splash.

The sound echoed through the cavern.

Thrum... Splash.

The Sovereign was moving. The fifteen-foot giant was wading through the lake, its colossal, armored legs displacing tons of water with every step. The heavy footsteps sent physical shockwaves rippling through the water, vibrating against the stone pillar the Vagabond was hiding behind.

Thrum... Splash.

The red light from the giant's visor cast eerie, sweeping beams across the dark water, illuminating the floating debris like a lighthouse searching for a wrecked ship.

The Vagabond clutched his bow tightly to his chest, the wood slick with water. He was entirely trapped in a flooded arena with a monster that could split him in half with a flick of its wrist. He had twenty-four arrows that were utterly useless, and his stamina was barely holding on.

Thrum... Splash.

The giant stopped. The heavy footsteps ceased.

The Vagabond held his breath, his eyes wide in the absolute darkness behind the pillar. The only sound in the cavern was the slow, rhythmic dripping of water from the stalactites above.

The Sovereign was standing less than twenty feet away from his hiding spot, listening to the silence.
