Chapter 4: Under the Gaze of Death

The Great Overthrow [A Souls-like LitRPG]

The darkness of the Royal Forest was not merely the absence of light; it was a physical weight.

As the Vagabond moved deeper into the ancient woods, the colossal, obsidian trunks closed ranks behind him, swallowing the faint grey glow of the Great Land. The canopy above was an impenetrable dome of interwoven, petrified branches. The only illumination came from patches of sickly, bioluminescent fungi clinging to the rotting bark, casting a faint, necrotic green pallor over the forest floor.

The air was stagnant, heavy with the suffocating stench of ancient pine, wet earth, and something cloyingly sweet—the smell of blooming rot.

He moved with absolute, terrifying silence.

The Step of Silence was active. Beneath the leather soles of his boots, the air had crystallized into a micro-vacuum. He stepped on a pile of brittle, dead leaves; they compressed beneath his weight, but the acoustic signature was instantly swallowed by the magical void. He stepped on a dry twig; it snapped, but the sound was devoured before it could travel an inch.

It was a perfect stealth mechanism, but perfection demanded a toll.

The Vagabond paused behind the massive trunk of a weeping willow that bled thick, black sap. He reached into his cloak and slightly opened the Magic Book, shielding the faint glow of the pages with his body. The ink was already shifting, tracking the continuous drain on his internal reserves.

He snapped the book shut. He had less than forty minutes of sustained movement before his mana pool ran dry and his footsteps began to echo like drumbeats in the dark.

He had to move faster, but the forest demanded agonizing caution.

He pushed forward, navigating the maze of colossal roots and sinkholes filled with stagnant, black water. Three minutes passed. Then, the ambient temperature of the forest suddenly spiked.

The Vagabond froze.

It wasn't the natural warmth of a Rest. It was an unnatural, searing heat, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic sound of heavy metal striking the earth.

Clank... Thud... Clank... Thud...

It was a synchronized march. Perfect. Disciplined. Terrifying.

The Vagabond immediately dropped into a low crouch, sliding into the hollowed-out, rotting cavity of a massive dead pine tree. He pressed his back tightly against the damp wood, drawing his dark cloak completely over his leather armor to conceal any reflection from his metal plating.

Through a narrow vertical crack in the dead wood, he watched the treeline.

Light pierced the gloom. It was not the pale green of the fungi, nor the warm orange of a natural fire. It was a blinding, piercing, magnesium-white flare.

Three figures emerged from the dense thicket.

The Vagabond’s breath caught in his throat. His heart hammered a violent rhythm against his ribs, and he had to consciously force his jaw shut to control the sound of his own breathing.

These were not the rusted, mindless Exiles of the plains. These were the Capital Knights. The Usurper’s true elite.

They stood nearly nine feet tall, clad in massive suits of pristine, heavy plate armor that seemed to mock the darkness. The armor was forged from an alloy of pale silver and corrupted gold, intricately etched with the insignia of the Usurper King—a crown crushing a skull. They did not walk so much as they glided, the sheer weight of their armor cracking the stone beneath their sabatons, yet their movements possessed a horrifying, fluid grace.

The knight in the center held a massive, chained censer, but instead of incense, it burned with that blinding, white magical flame. It was a Revealing Torch. As the white light washed over the ancient trees, the shadows seemed to physically scream and burn away.

The two flanking knights carried weapons that defied reason—greatswords as long as a grown man, glowing with a faint, lethal heat.

The Vagabond analyzed the threat level. His tactical mind, usually so cold and calculating, provided only one absolute conclusion: If they see you, you die.

There was no flanking these monsters. There was no parrying a blade that weighed three hundred pounds and swung with the speed of an executioner's axe. His medium steel sword would shatter like glass against their golden breastplates. He possessed four Spiritual Energies and one Complete Energy. It wouldn't matter. A single strike from those knights wouldn't just wound him; it would vaporize his physical integrity completely.

The patrol was moving directly toward his hiding spot.

Clank... Thud... Clank... Thud...

The searing heat of the Revealing Torch washed over the rotting pine tree. The white light bled through the crack in the wood, illuminating the Vagabond’s face. He squeezed his eyes shut, turning his head away to prevent the moisture in his eyes from reflecting the light.

His stamina bar began to drain, not from movement, but from the agonizing, rigid tension of holding his muscles in absolute stasis. His thighs burned. His lungs screamed for a deep breath, but he restricted himself to shallow, silent sips of the stifling air.

Do not move. Do not breathe. Become the wood.

The patrol stopped.

Right in front of his tree.

The Vagabond’s blood ran cold. The immense, imposing bulk of the lead knight was less than three feet away, separated only by an inch of rotting bark. He could smell the ozone burning off the white flame. He could hear the low, mechanical hum of the magic sustaining their golden armor.

The knight turned his massive, horned helmet toward the hollowed pine.

The Vagabond’s mana pool was draining. 68%... 64%... 60%.

The knight leaned closer. The Vagabond could hear the deep, resonant sound of the monster sniffing the air through the vents of its visor. It smelled the sweat. It smelled the fresh scar tissue on his shoulder.

The knight raised a gauntleted hand, resting it against the trunk of the dead pine. The wood groaned under the immense pressure. If the knight decided to simply push, the tree would splinter into toothpicks, exposing the mercenary instantly.

The Vagabond’s right hand rested on his sword hilt, his knuckles white. It was a useless gesture, but a mercenary dies with his hand on his steel.

Mana: 56%... Stamina: Critical. Muscle failure imminent.

He had to shift his weight. His left leg was going numb. If he fell, the armor would clatter.

Relying entirely on the Step of Silence, the Vagabond agonizingly, millimeter by millimeter, shifted his weight from his left boot to his right. The leather sole ground against the hard, dead wood inside the cavity. It was a movement that should have produced a loud scrape.

The magic held. The vacuum swallowed the sound completely.

The knight tilted its head, pausing for what felt like an eternity. The white flame of the censer flared, casting sharp, unnatural shadows.

Then, a distant sound echoed through the forest—the haunting, mournful howl of a massive beast from the deepest sector of the woods.

The knight withdrew his hand from the tree. He turned toward the source of the sound, his heavy golden cape sweeping the forest floor. With a synchronized, mechanical precision, the three giants resumed their march, heading deeper into the forest, following the howl.

Clank... Thud... Clank... Thud...

The Vagabond remained frozen in the cavity for five full minutes after the white light faded and the rhythmic thudding was swallowed by the dark.

When he finally stepped out of the hollow pine, his legs nearly gave way. He leaned against the damp bark, taking long, ragged, greedy breaths of the foul air. His tunic was drenched in cold sweat. His hands were shaking slightly—a rare, involuntary betrayal of his iron nerves.

He pulled out the Magic Book.

He had survived. Not by his blade, but by a stolen ghost trick.

The encounter forcefully realigned his perspective. He was a predator in the Great Land, but here, in the Royal Forest, he was merely an insect crawling under the boots of gods. The Usurper King’s power was absolute, a suffocating blanket of golden armor and white fire.

The Vagabond’s secret, dark agenda—to eventually breach the Golden Capital and burn the world down—suddenly felt like the ambition of a madman. To reach the King, he would have to carve through an army of those.

But a mercenary does not accept payment and turn back.

He stood up, shaking the fatigue from his limbs. He looked in the direction the knights had marched. The howl he had heard wasn't just a random beast. It was a territorial warning. It came from the center of the forest. The Sacred Nurseries.

Through the dense, obsidian trunks, he could now see a faint, pulsating glow in the far distance. It wasn't the sickly green of fungi or the blinding white of the knights. It was a deep, mesmerizing, crystalline blue.

The Tyrant's Nest.

The Vagabond adjusted his dark cloak, ensured the Step of Silence was still holding the vacuum beneath his boots, and walked toward the blue light, stepping into the absolute unknown.
