The western trade routes were theirs, and the skies above the canyons belonged to the Vanguard. But Kaelen knew that silver and griffins wouldn’t stop the First Legion when the King finally signed his execution order. To face the true might of the Empire, he needed more than iron-scale armor and shadow-mana.
He needed to complete the trinity of his core.
Two weeks after the fall of the Citadel, Kaelen stood at the rim of **The Dragon’s Maw**, a massive, hyper-volatile volcano chain three hundred miles east of the Ash-Wastes. The air here didn't just smell like sulfur; it burned the throat like swallowed glass. The ground beneath his boots was a cracked crust of black basalt, glowing with angry, liquid-crimson veins of moving magma.
"This is an entirely different level of stupid, Kai," Jax choked out, wearing a heavily dampened cloth over his mouth. Even his iron-scale armor felt blisteringly hot to the touch.
"You say that every time we go somewhere fun, Jax," Kaelen joked, though sweat was pouring down his face, washing clean lines through the soot on his cheeks.
Beside them, Goran looked perfectly at home, his massive frame absorbing the heat, while Sylvia stayed near the edge of the basalt ridge, her shadow-chains writhing uncomfortably under the brilliant, oppressive glare of the lava pools below.
Up in the suffocatingly hot sky, the Shadow Dragon Kuro circled restlessly, his violet-black form keeping a wide berth from the volcano's peak. Kuro was a creature of the void; the raw, unbridled kinetic energy of a magma chamber was his natural antithesis.
"He's down there," Kaelen murmured, his blue eyes tracking the erratic, violent bubbling at the center of the largest lava lake.
His core was screaming. The azure lightning and the violet shadow-mana inside his spiritual center were violently swirling, drawn to the sheer, oppressive thermal energy radiating from the depths. *The third shard.*
*RUMBLE.*
The ground didn't just shake; the entire basalt shelf tilted.
A colossal plume of white-hot magma erupted two hundred feet into the air. Out of the molten fountain rose the **Ignis Tyrant**—the legendary Fire Dragon. It was shorter and denser than Kuro, its body covered in overlapping, jagged plates of crystalline ruby-rock that bled actual white-hot liquid fire. Its eyes were two burning suns, and its breath hissed with a heat that instantly turned the surrounding stone into liquid glass.
The dragon let out a roar that shattered the basalt spires around the rim, a physical wave of thermal energy that sent a backdraft of flame washing over the Vanguard's position.
"Hold the line!" Goran bellowed, slamming his drake-bone axe into the ground to anchor himself against the heat blast.
The Ignis Tyrant locked its blinding, solar eyes onto Kaelen. It didn't view him as food like Kuro had, or a territorial rival like the Earth Drake. It viewed him as a spark—an annoying, cold spark that dared to bring thunder into its forge.
"Goran, Jax, Sylvia—keep back," Kaelen commanded, his voice carrying an uncharacteristic, dead-serious weight. He unbuckled his obsidian brigandine, letting the heavy armor drop to the stone floor. Against a beast that breathed 3,000°C liquid fire, heavy plates would just turn into a molten coffin.
He stood there stripped to the waist, his lean, scarred muscles glistening in the crimson glare. He drew his black obsidian sword, the amber vein flashing a chaotic, violent purple-blue.
The Fire Dragon lunged, its massive ruby tail cutting through the air like a burning whip, leaving a trail of melting stone in its wake.
Kaelen didn't dodge away. He ignited his boots with a maximum-frequency burst of lightning, launching himself *forward*, straight into the heat of the tyrant’s domain.
"Let's see if you can handle a real meltdown!" Kaelen roared, his cocky smirk returning as he blurred across the burning stone.
