Chapter 6: The Iron-Scale Drake

The grounded sovereign

## Chapter 6: The Iron-Scale Drake

The Ash-Wastes did not welcome newcomers. They bled them.

For two weeks, the newly christened Ghost Squad marched through a landscape carved from nightmare. The ground beneath their boots was a jagged crust of black volcanic glass and grey ash that kicked up with every gust of wind, burning the throat and stinging the eyes. Water was scarce, found only in highly acidic sulfur pools that Sylvia had to test with her shadow-infused stones before anyone dared take a sip.

Yet, under Kaelen’s leadership, the dregs were transforming.

He didn't march at the front like a distant lord; he walked alongside them in the dust. When Goran’s massive frame slowed down from a lack of clean water, Kaelen handed over his own canteen without a word. When Jax almost stepped into a hidden fissure of boiling mud, Kaelen’s lightning-fast hand yanked the thief back by his collar before he could even scream.

He was cocky, he was arrogant, and he pushed them to the absolute brink of physical exhaustion—but he bled with them. And slowly, the criminals and deserters began to look at the sixteen-year-old prince not as a boy, but as an anchor.

"The wind is dead," Sylvia murmured, slipping out from the shadows of a massive black boulder. She had become the squad's eyes, her shadow-weaving magic allowing her to melt into the terrain ahead to scout. Her hood was down, her silver hair braided tight, her amber eyes fixed on Kaelen. "And the wildlife has completely vanished. Even the ash-rats are gone."

Kaelen stopped, his hand automatically dropping to the pommel of his worn iron sword. He closed his eyes, extending his awareness outward.

In the capital, tutors taught that the air was empty. Out here, Kaelen knew better. The ambient mana was thick, heavy, and currently vibrating with a low, rhythmic frequency that felt like the beating of a colossal heart.

*Thump. Thump.*

"Everyone down," Kaelen commanded, his voice dropping its usual teasing edge.

Before the squad could dive for the cover of the volcanic ridges, the black mountain above them cracked.

A shower of boulders cascading down the slope announced its arrival. Rising from the crest of the ridge was a creature of myth. It was an **Iron-Scale Drake**—a lesser earth dragon that had ruled these jagged peaks for centuries. It easily stretched fifty feet from its snout to its heavy, clubbed tail. Its body was encased in thick, overlapping plates of dark, metallic scales that gleamed like polished obsidian.

The drake lowered its massive, angular head, its eyes glowing like molten gold through the sulfur haze. It opened its maw, unleashing a roar so profoundly resonant it shook the loose gravel beneath their boots and rattled the teeth in Kaelen’s skull.

"By the gods," Jax whimpered, his knees shaking violently as he gripped his short daggers. "That’s... that’s a living mountain."

"Form up!" Sylvia shouted, her shadow magic flaring around her hands like black fire. "Goran, shield the rear! Jax, don't you dare run!"

Goran roared, lifting his massive iron club, his northern berserker blood boiling at the sight of a worthy foe. But even he looked small compared to the ancient beast.

The dragon didn't breathe fire. It breathed pressure.

With a violent snap of its jaws, the drake unleashed a localized shockwave of pure gravity mana. The air shattered. The invisible force slammed into the squad, sending Goran skidding backward ten yards, his boots cutting deep furrows into the volcanic rock. Sylvia was thrown from her footing, her shadows scattering like smoke under the immense pressure.

Kaelen, however, didn't fall.

He dug his heels into the ash, his core violently igniting. Azure lightning erupted from his skin, forming a protective, crackling barrier that deflected the worst of the gravitational force. His dark hair whipped around his face, and his wild, rebellious grin tore open across his lips.

"An earth dragon," Kaelen laughed, the sound loud and manic over the howling wind. "Perfect! I was getting tired of fighting oversized wolves!"

The drake, irritated by the tiny spark that refused to crush, lunged. It moved with terrifying, deceptive speed for its size, its massive, iron-plated claws sweeping down to flatten Kaelen into a bloody paste.

"Captain!" Sylvia screamed, reaching out a hand as she tried to manifest a shadow-binding chain to slow the beast down.

Kaelen didn't move until the shadow of the claw was inches from his face.

*Lightning Flicker.*

*CRACK.*

A thunderclap echoed through the canyon as Kaelen vanished, appearing high in the air above the dragon’s forearm. He drew his iron blade, the steel instantly roaring to life with a blinding, high-frequency current of azure electricity.

He brought the sword down in a perfect, downward arc, aiming for the joint between the dragon's shoulder scales.

*SPARK!*

The sound of metal striking metal was deafening. Kaelen’s blade bit into the obsidian-like skin, but it didn't cut. The iron-scale armor was completely immune to physical blade strikes, and the lightning merely rippled across the metallic plates, grounding itself harmlessly into the earth.

The drake violently whipped its body, its massive tail sweeping through the air like a battering ram. The clubbed tail caught Kaelen mid-air, smashing into his ribs.

*BOOM.*

Kaelen was hurled across the canyon, crashing hard into a jagged wall of volcanic glass. The impact shattered the stone behind him, and he slid down into the ash, coughing up a mouthful of dark blood. His iron sword clattered to the ground a few feet away.

"Kai!" Jax yelled, panicking.

The dragon turned its golden eyes toward the fallen prince, lifting its massive foot to stomp him into oblivion.

Kaelen ground his teeth, pushing himself up through the pain. His ribs were cracked, and his breath tasted like copper. But as he looked at the oncoming mountain of iron and scales, his confidence didn't waiver. His mind raced at an invisible speed.

*Physical attacks don't work. The lightning grounds out on the scales. So... I don't hit the outside.*

Kaelen grabbed his sword, his eyes locking onto the dragon’s head. As the beast opened its maw to unleash another crushing gravity roar, Kaelen saw it—the soft, unarmored tissues inside the throat, and the microscopic gap right beneath its glowing golden eye where the plates met to allow movement.

"Hey! Over here, lizard!" Kaelen shouted, his voice cracking with adrenaline.

He didn't run away. He ran *at* the dragon.

*Lightning Flicker—Double Flash.*

In a display of raw mana control that would have killed a lesser mage from core back-pressure, Kaelen executed two spatial blinks in a row. He vanished from the ground, reappeared mid-air, and blinked again, landing directly onto the snout of the thrashing drake.

The dragon’s golden eye widened, inches away from him.

"This is going to hurt," Kaelen whispered.

He didn't swing the sword. He drove the tip of the iron blade straight into the microscopic gap beneath the dragon's golden eye, burying the steel up to the hilt.

*MAXIMUM OUTPUT.*

Kaelen didn't unleash a standard arc of lightning. He poured the entire, unfiltered reservoir of his blue mana core directly through the sword and *into* the dragon's skull. The high-frequency electrical current bypassed the iron scales entirely, tearing through the beast's internal nervous system, cooking its brain with a million volts of pure, unadulterated lightning.

The drake froze. Its massive body shuddered violently, arcs of blinding blue electricity erupting from its mouth, its ears, and its eyes. It let out a choked, pathetic gurgle before its massive legs gave out.

*THUD.*

The fifty-foot beast crashed into the ash, kicking up a massive cloud of dust that completely obscured the canyon.

Silence fell over the wastes.

Sylvia, Goran, and Jax stood paralyzed, staring into the settling dust. When the fog finally cleared, they saw Kaelen.

He was sitting casually on top of the dead dragon's head, his legs swinging over the snout. His uniform was torn to shreds, his chest was heavily bruised, and he was wiping blood from his chin—but he was laughing. A breathless, victorious, beautiful laugh.

He pulled his melted iron sword from the beast's eye socket, looking down at the massive, dead entity that had ruled the wastes for a millennium.

"First one down," Kaelen breathed, turning his gaze toward his stunned squad, his eyes glowing with the untamed, terrifying light of a true conqueror. "Now... who wants to help me skin it? I think we just found our new armor."
