Chapter 8: wanting to serve

The Hero System Chose the Demon King

The person stepped forward.

His aura was stronger than mine.

Much stronger.

He was an early-stage Immortal cultivator.

Though the sisters had reconstructed my body, they had only restored its vessel.

My true body parts—the very source of my original power—were still scattered across the world where they had been buried and hidden.

That was why I needed the map.

I couldn’t leave my body parts where they were.

Even though they were no longer physical flesh, they were still fragments of the energy I had once controlled.

Now, an Immortal stood before me.

If he discovered I was a demon cultivator, he might mistake me for nothing more than a lesser demon.

But what if...

What if he realized I was the Demon King?

I clenched my fists.

Would that title even still suit me in my current state?

As the frightened crowd continued running past us, I slowly turned around to face the voice that had called out to me.

The footsteps drew closer.

Closer.

Until they finally stopped in front of me.

The man had long, dark-blue hair that reached past his shoulders.

His sharp, narrow eyes gave him the appearance of a cunning fox.

He was rather chubby.

At first glance, no one would have taken him seriously.

But the powerful aura radiating from his body warned everyone not to underestimate him.

"So..."

"You claim to be a messenger of God?"

The man asked, raising an eyebrow as he looked at me.

I chuckled.

"A messenger of God?"

"You must have heard wrong."

"I shall be taking my leave."

I turned around and was about to walk away.

Before I could take another step, the man grabbed my shoulder, stopping me.

I didn’t want to waste any more time here.

If this Immortal discovered I was a demon cultivator, things would become troublesome.

And if he somehow uncovered my true identity...

I would be in serious trouble.

I was at my weakest.

I couldn’t afford to fight someone like him.

"Please."

"Let go of me."

"I’ve already done what I came here to do."

"I shall take my leave."

Just as I tried to leave again, the man suddenly grabbed my wrist.

"Messenger of God..."

"Please don’t go."

Then, to my complete surprise...

He knelt.

He lowered his head until it touched the ground and began bowing repeatedly.

"Messenger of God!"

"I can’t believe I’m seeing a real Messenger of God!"

"When I told everyone that God truly exists—that His messengers exist as well—no one believed me."

"They all called me crazy."

"But now..."

"I’ve seen one with my own eyes."

"I’ve proven them all wrong!"

I studied the man carefully.

It seemed he genuinely believed I was a messenger sent by God.

He wasn’t pretending.

He was completely serious.

A thought quietly crossed my mind.

If he truly believed that...

Then perhaps I could use it to my advantage.

"Yes."

"I am a messenger of God."

"I have already fulfilled my duty."

"Now..."

"I shall take my leave."

I repeated myself.

"Please!"

"Allow me to serve you, Messenger of God!"

"Let me guide you around the city."

"Please let me serve you until the day you leave Crayan Kingdom."

Tears streamed down his face as he pleaded.

I frowned.

Mortals...

They were always so troublesome.

If this Immortal hadn’t been stronger than me in my current state...

I would’ve cut his head off already.

The system’s voice echoed in my head.

"Young Hero, accept him."

"Allow him to become your guide around the city."

"It will improve your reputation."

"I’m not accepting anyone."

I answered the system immediately before continuing to walk away.

Unfortunately...

The man continued chasing after me.

"Messenger of God!"

"Please accept me!"

"Let me serve you!"

"This is getting annoying."

Ella, who had been standing beside me the whole time, finally spoke.

"Hey."

"Can’t you just accept him?"

"He’s making a scene."

"Everyone is staring at us."

I shot Ella a glare.

"You should keep your mouth shut."

"Daughter Stay out of this."

"Who is your daughter?"

Ella’s forehead twitched as a vein bulged.

He pointed an accusing finger at me.

I sighed inwardly.

Now...

How exactly was I supposed to get out of this situation?
