The first thing Li Tian noticed was that the ancient warrior was fast.

The second thing he noticed was that the ancient warrior was trying very hard to kill him.

The third thing he noticed was that the system had given him an objective that was, frankly, unreasonable.Full novel: The Hidden Dao Ancestor: I Cultivate in Secret for Eternity — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

[Hidden Cultivation System]

Critical Objective: Survive.

Restriction: The Silent One must not draw his sword.

Secondary Objective: Protect Mei Ling.

Warning: The guardian's hostility is connected to the Host's previous identity.

Li Tian stared at the messages as the enormous stone sword descended toward his head.

"Previous identity? You could have explained that five seconds ago!"

He shifted his body.

The sword struck the floor beside him.

BOOM!

The entire chamber shook. Stone fragments shot through the air, and a deep crack raced across the floor.

Li Tian stepped around the crater.

The warrior turned its helmet toward him.

For a moment, the ancient being appeared genuinely surprised.

Then it attacked again.

Its second strike was faster than the first, carrying a golden force that distorted the surrounding air. Li Tian leaned backward, allowing the blade to pass a finger's width above his chest.

He could have stopped the sword.

He could have destroyed the guardian.

But the system's restriction remained firmly in his vision.

And somewhere beneath the restriction, he felt an unsettling truth.

If he used his full strength, something inside the shrine might awaken.

Something far worse than the guardian.

So he dodged.

Again.

And again.

And again.

The guardian's sword smashed through a stone pillar.

Li Tian slipped beneath the next swing.

The blade struck the wall, scattering fragments across the chamber.

Li Tian jumped over a crack in the floor.

Then he landed directly beside Chen Wei, who was lying flat on his stomach with his cooking pot covering the back of his head.

"Get up."

Chen Wei lifted the pot.

"Are we alive?"

"For now."

"Then I refuse to move. Movement attracts danger."

Another shock wave swept through the chamber.

Chen Wei rolled three times before crashing into a statue.

He slowly sat up.

"I have reconsidered. Movement is essential."

Across the chamber, Han Feng struggled against the guardian's pressure. His sword was drawn, but the weight of the ancient warrior's presence forced him to one knee.

Mei Ling stood several steps away, fighting to keep her balance.

The golden mark on her sword had spread almost to the hilt.

Li Tian noticed it.

Every time the guardian attacked, the mark brightened.

The warrior was not merely trying to kill him.

It was testing something.

And Mei Ling's sword was responding to the test.

"Mei Ling!" Li Tian called. "Don't attack the guardian directly!"

She turned her head.

"Then what should I do?"

"Watch its sword!"

"That's your plan?"

"I'm still working on the details!"

The guardian roared.

"Stop speaking as though this were a game!"

Its sword came down again.

Li Tian dodged, and the blade struck the ground so hard that the entire chamber tilted.

Chen Wei grabbed a nearby statue.

"Who gave this person permission to swing a mountain around?"

Bao Bao, who had been hiding behind Li Tian's collar, finally leaped onto his head.

"Because," the fox said, "that sword was forged from the heart of a fallen mountain."

Li Tian ducked another strike.

"That information would have been more useful before we entered!"

"I assumed you knew."

"Why would I know that?"

"You have a talent for attracting unreasonable situations."

The guardian abruptly stopped attacking.

Its sword hovered above the floor.

The pale lights beneath its helmet narrowed.

"You still joke."

Li Tian froze for half a second.

The warrior lowered its weapon.

"Even after everything, you still hide behind meaningless words."

A strange pressure entered Li Tian's mind.

The chamber faded around him.

For a heartbeat, he stood beneath a sky torn apart by golden lightning.

Thousands of swords floated above a battlefield. Armored cultivators fought against creatures made of black mist, while the stars overhead cracked like glass.

At the center of the devastation stood the white-robed man.

Li Tian's face.

His eyes.

His expression.

The same impossible calm.

Opposite him stood a younger version of the guardian, kneeling beside a fallen man in golden armor.

The fallen man's sword had broken.

His blood flowed into the earth.

The white-robed man extended a hand.

"Jian Wu, come with me."

The kneeling warrior looked up.

"You killed him."

"He was going to open the gate."

"He was my master!"

"He would have destroyed the world."

"You could have saved him!"

The white-robed man said nothing.

The younger guardian rose, his eyes filled with hatred.

"Then I will spend eternity waiting for the day you return."

The vision shattered.

Li Tian staggered.

The guardian's sword was already descending.

He barely avoided it.

This time, however, he did not retreat immediately.

He looked at the ancient warrior and spoke with unusual seriousness.

"I don't remember your master."

The guardian's sword stopped.

Li Tian continued.

"But if I killed him, I want to know why."

The chamber fell silent.

For the first time since the battle began, the ancient warrior did not attack.

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No. I expect you to explain it."

The guardian's grip tightened around its sword.

"You have forgotten everything."

"Apparently."

"You have forgotten the heavens you shattered."

"That sounds expensive."

"You have forgotten the armies that died beneath your command."

Li Tian's smile vanished.

The warrior's voice trembled with ancient fury.

"And you have forgotten the man who begged you to spare his master."

Because, for the first time, he wondered whether the truth about his previous life was something he actually wanted to remember.

Mei Ling felt the atmosphere change.

The guardian had stopped attacking, but the golden mark on her sword continued to glow.

She looked at the weapon.

Then at Li Tian.

Something was happening between them, something she could sense but could not understand.

The sword felt heavier than before.

Not physically.

It was as though an ancient responsibility had settled onto her shoulders.

A faint voice entered her mind.

Gatekeeper.

Mei Ling tightened her grip.

You have returned.

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know who you think I am."

The voice remained calm.

You are the one who stands at the threshold.

"I am Mei Ling, a disciple of Heavenly Cloud Sect."

Names are temporary.

"Then remember mine."

The golden light flickered.

Mei Ling.

The voice seemed to taste the name, as though it had not heard it spoken for ten thousand years.

Very well.

A wave of spiritual energy flowed through the sword.

Mei Ling's vision filled with strange images: an enormous gate floating between stars, a silver-haired woman standing before it, and countless swords arranged in a circle.

The woman wore white robes similar to those of the man in Li Tian's memories.

But her face was different.

Her eyes were tired.

Her sword was broken.

And behind her stood nine figures, each carrying a different weapon.

One of them had Li Tian's face.

The silver-haired woman turned toward him.

"Promise me something."

The white-robed man looked at her.

"What?"

"If you ever return, do not open the door."

The vision shattered.

Mei Ling gasped.

Her sword trembled in her hand.

The golden mark had changed.

It was no longer a line.

It was a small, intricate symbol resembling a closed eye.

She stared at it, breathing hard.

Then she looked at Li Tian.

"Li Tian!"

He turned immediately.

"What happened?"

"I saw something."

Before she could explain, the guardian's sword struck the floor.

The ancient warrior roared.

"Enough!"

The entire shrine shook.

"I did not wait ten thousand years to listen to excuses!"

The golden energy surrounding the warrior erupted.

Its sword grew brighter, and the stone armor covering its body began to split. Beneath the cracks, something like liquid starlight flowed.

Han Feng was thrown backward.

Mei Ling barely maintained her footing.

Chen Wei grabbed Bao Bao by the tail and pulled him behind a broken pillar.

The fox shrieked.

"Release me, you foolish mortal!"

"I am protecting you!"

"By my tail?"

"It's the only part I could reach!"

Li Tian stepped forward.

"Jian Wu's guardian!"

The warrior's head turned.

"Tell me what your master's name was."

The question halted the guardian for an instant.

Its sword lowered slightly.

Then it spoke.

"Jian Wu."

Li Tian nodded.

"And why did I kill him?"

The guardian's answer came slowly.

"Because he refused to let you open the Ninth Gate."

A sharp ringing filled Li Tian's ears.

The system flashed.

[Memory Resonance Detected]

Recovery Progress: 0.07% → 0.09%

Warning: The recovered memory contains a contradictory causal sequence.

Warning: Memory integrity compromised.

Li Tian's heart tightened.

A contradictory causal sequence?

Before he could ask, the guardian continued.

"My master believed the Ninth Gate could be sealed forever. You believed it had to be opened."

The ancient warrior raised its sword.

"You fought for three days and three nights. When the battle ended, my master was dead, the Gatekeepers were scattered, and the Ninth Seal was created."

Li Tian stared at him.

"Then why does the system say I must not draw my sword?"

The guardian froze.

The pale lights beneath its helmet flared.

"What did you say?"

Li Tian realized his mistake.

Too late.

The guardian took one step toward him.

"What system?"

Li Tian said nothing.

The warrior's sword began to tremble.

"What have you done to yourself?"

For the first time, the guardian sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

It looked at Li Tian as though it had just discovered a wound far more terrible than the destruction of the ancient heavens.

"You sealed your own memories."

Li Tian felt the air leave his lungs.

The guardian continued, its voice growing quieter.

"And you placed your soul inside a vessel that would keep you ignorant of your own power."

Bao Bao stopped struggling.

Mei Ling stared at Li Tian.

Han Feng slowly rose from the floor.

Nobody spoke.

The guardian lowered its sword.

"Who gave you that system?"

Li Tian opened his mouth.

He had asked himself that question many times.

He had never received an answer.

"I don't know."

The guardian remained motionless.

Then, with terrible slowness, it turned its helmet toward the shrine's deepest chamber.

A deep rumble passed beneath their feet.

From somewhere behind the enormous stone sword, a hidden door opened.

Golden light spilled into the chamber.

And from the darkness beyond it came a voice that sounded exactly like Li Tian's own.

"Jian Wu."

The guardian's sword slipped from its hand.

The voice spoke again.

"You have waited long enough."

Li Tian felt a cold sensation spread through his body.

Because the voice had not come from the hidden chamber.

It had come from inside his own head.

For several moments, Li Tian could not move.

The voice was familiar in a way that made his skin crawl.

It was his voice, yet older. Calmer. Stripped of the small uncertainties that shaped his current thoughts.

It carried the authority of someone who had once commanded armies and watched stars die without flinching.

"Jian Wu," the voice repeated. "Complete the trial."

The guardian slowly retrieved its sword.

Its movements had changed.

The fury was gone.

In its place was something resembling grief.

"I have waited ten thousand years for your return," it said.

Then it knelt.

Han Feng's eyes widened.

Mei Ling tightened her grip on her sword.

Chen Wei peeked from behind the pillar.

"Why is the terrifying ancient monster kneeling to Li Tian?"

Bao Bao's ears lowered.

"Because the voice belongs to the person who created this place."

Chen Wei stared at the fox.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

"That word is becoming a serious problem!"

Li Tian ignored them.

He was listening to the voice inside his head.

"Do not fear what you have forgotten."

"Easy for you to say," Li Tian whispered.

"You chose this path."

"Why?"

No answer.

"Why did I seal my memories?"

Silence.

Then the voice said something that made his blood run cold.

"Because you discovered that the greatest enemy of the Ninth Gate was not the thing imprisoned beyond it."

Li Tian's breathing slowed.

"Then what was it?"

The golden light in the hidden chamber intensified.

The guardian raised its head.

The voice answered.

"The person who opened it."

The shrine shook.

Every statue outside turned toward the hidden chamber.

Far away, beneath the western mountain, the black coffin's ninth ring cracked again.

And in the deepest reaches of the Void, an enormous eye opened.

A message appeared across the system window.

[Emergency Revelation]

The Host's former identity has been partially confirmed.

Designation: The Silent One.

Additional Classification: Ninth Gate Architect.

Warning: The Host may not be the original owner of the current soul vessel.

Li Tian's face turned pale.

He read the final line again.

The current soul vessel.

His body.

His life.

His memories.

What did the system mean by not the original owner?

Before he could ask, the voice inside his head whispered one final sentence.

"And now, my child, you must decide whether you wish to remember the truth."

Two choices appeared in the system window.

[Recover the next memory fragment.]

[Reject the memory and preserve current stability.]

Li Tian stared at the choices.

For once, the system was asking him to decide.

Not because it lacked an answer.

But because the answer might change everything.

Mei Ling stepped beside him.

She did not ask what he had seen.

She did not demand an explanation.

She simply stood there, sword in hand, waiting for him to decide.

Li Tian looked at her.

Then at Han Feng, who was struggling to understand what he had witnessed.

Then at Chen Wei, who was still holding Bao Bao upside down.

Finally, Li Tian looked toward the golden chamber.

He had wanted a quiet life.

He had wanted to cultivate without being noticed.

He had wanted to remain ignorant of ancient wars, cosmic gates, and the terrifying possibilities hidden inside his own soul.

But ignorance had not protected the people around him.

It had only left him unprepared.

Li Tian raised his hand.

And selected the first option.

[Memory Recovery Initiated.]

The world went dark.

For a single heartbeat, he saw the ancient battlefield again.

This time, the white-robed man was not standing alone.

Behind him stood countless figures.

Gatekeepers.

Immortal emperors.

Spirit beasts.

And a young woman holding a broken sword.

The woman turned toward Li Tian.

Her face was hidden by a veil of golden light.

But her voice was clear.

"Remember this, Silent One."

The battlefield trembled.

"The one who gave you the system is not the one who saved you."

A crack spread across the sky.

"And the one who saved you is not the one who loved you."

The vision shattered.

Li Tian collapsed.

Mei Ling caught him before he struck the floor.

The guardian rose with a cry of alarm.

The system filled with warnings.

[Memory Recovery Interrupted.]

[Soul Stability: 63%.]

[Unknown entity detected within Host's consciousness.]

[Entity designation: THE FIRST WITNESS.]

Then a final message appeared.

[The First Witness has awakened.]

Inside Li Tian's mind, something opened its eyes.

And it whispered:

"At last. I can speak to you without the system listening."
