Chapter 17: The Dragon's Rest

The last DragonHeart

The journey to the Dragon's Rest took three days.

James traveled through the heart of the Aetherwilds, crossing floating islands and rivers of liquid light. The landscape grew stranger with each step—trees with bark like burnished gold, flowers that sang in harmonic tones, creatures of pure energy that watched him with ancient, knowing eyes.

He felt the golden fire in his chest pulsing in rhythm with the land itself, as if the Aetherwilds recognized him. Welcomed him. Challenged him.

On the third day, he found it.

The Dragon's Rest was not a building or a cave. It was a valley—massive and ancient, surrounded by mountains that seemed to touch the swirling sky. The ground was covered in golden grass that shimmered with its own light, and at the center of the valley stood a single structure: a stone altar carved with the image of a great dragon, its wings spread wide, its eyes blazing with eternal fire.

James stepped into the valley, and the golden fire in his chest exploded.

Power flooded through him—raw, overwhelming, ancient. He fell to his knees, gasping, as visions flooded his mind. Images of warriors clad in golden armor, battles against shadowy enemies, and a great dragon that soared through the skies of a world long forgotten.

The Dragonheart bloodline remembers.

James forced himself to his feet, his body trembling. The visions faded, but the power remained—thrumming through his veins like a second heartbeat.

He walked toward the altar, each step heavier than the last. The golden grass parted before him, and the air grew thick with energy that crackled against his skin.

When he reached the altar, he saw that it was covered in ancient symbols—the same symbols that had blazed across his skin when his seal first broke. They pulsed with golden light, responding to his presence.

A voice echoed from the altar—deep, resonant, ancient.

"You who carry the blood of the Dragonheart. You who seek the power of your ancestors. You who would face the trials of the Rest."

James's golden fire blazed brighter. "I am James Ironheart. I seek to reach Grade Nine. To protect those I love. To face the higher realms."

"Then you must prove yourself worthy."

The ground beneath James's feet began to tremble. The golden grass erupted into flames—not harmful, but transformative. The fire swirled around him, cocooning him in a vortex of light and heat.

"The first trial: The Trial of Fire."

James felt the flames penetrate his skin, searing through his flesh and into his very soul. The pain was unimaginable—worse than anything he'd ever experienced. It felt like his entire being was being burned away, layer by layer.

"Your bloodline is fire. But fire is not just destruction. It is purification. It is transformation. You must become one with the flame, or be consumed by it."

James gritted his teeth. The golden fire in his chest surged, trying to fight back against the external flames. But that was the wrong approach. He realized it instinctively. The fire wasn't his enemy. It was his teacher.

Guide the fire. Become one with it.

James stopped fighting. He stopped resisting. He opened himself to the flames, letting them flow into him, through him, around him.

The pain shifted—from agony to ecstasy. The flames didn't burn him; they purified him. They burned away his doubts, his fears, his weaknesses. They left behind only strength. Only purpose. Only truth.

When the flames finally faded, James was kneeling on the golden grass, his body glowing with an inner radiance. The symbols on his skin blazed brighter than ever before.

"The Trial of Fire is complete. You have passed."

James rose slowly, feeling different. Stronger. More connected to his bloodline than ever before.

"Grade Eight," he breathed. "I reached Grade Eight."

The altar pulsed with golden light, and the voice echoed again.

"You have unlocked the first level of your bloodline. But there are more trials ahead. The Trial of Earth. The Trial of Wind. The Trial of Water. The Trial of Spirit. Each will push you to your limits. Each will demand everything you have."

James nodded, his jaw set. "I'm ready."

"Then rest, Dragonheart. The trials will continue at dawn."

James walked to the edge of the valley, his body humming with new power. He sat down on the golden grass, looking up at the swirling sky.

He had reached Grade Eight. He was closer to his goal.

But there was something else—something that had awakened in the flames. Fragments of memory. Fragments of truth.

His parents.

He closed his eyes, letting the visions wash over him.

The Memory

He saw his mother.

She was beautiful—with golden hair that cascaded like sunlight, and eyes that blazed with the same fire that burned in James's chest. She was holding him as a baby, cradling him in her arms, a look of fierce determination on her face.

"You will be the last," she whispered. "The last of our bloodline. And you will be the greatest. You will unite the realms. You will bring peace. I promise you that."

His father stood beside her—tall and strong, with dark hair and a kind smile. He placed his hand on James's head, and golden fire pulsed gently around his palm.

"We love you, James. More than anything. And that's why we have to leave. The Blackwoods are coming. The higher realms are coming. They want to destroy you before you can grow. We can't let that happen."

James's mother pressed a kiss to his forehead.

"We're going to hide you. Seal your power. Let them think you're nothing. Let them forget about you. And when you're ready—when you're strong enough—the seal will break. You'll remember everything. You'll know who you truly are."

His father's voice was thick with emotion.

"We won't see you grow up, James. We won't be there to protect you. But we believe in you. We believe in the power of the Dragonheart. And we believe in your future."

The memory faded, and James opened his eyes. Tears streamed down his face.

His parents had sacrificed everything for him. They had hidden his power, sealed his bloodline, and given their lives to protect him.

And now it was his turn to honor their sacrifice.

"I won't let you down," James whispered to the sky. "I'll become strong enough. I'll unite the realms. I'll bring peace."

He looked down at his hands, the golden fire pulsing gently around his palms.

"I promise."

The Connection

Later that night, James pulled out the communication crystal that Sage had given him. It pulsed with a soft golden light, warm against his palm.

He focused his energy into it, and moments later, Kael's voice crackled through.

"JAMES! IS THAT YOU?! IT'S YOU! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT WORKED! I'VE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE THIS THING OUT FOR HOURS—"

James laughed, his heart lightening. "Kael. It's good to hear your voice."

"I'M AT THE VERDANT VALLEY! IT'S AMAZING! THERE ARE FLOWERS THAT SING AND TREES THAT DANCE AND—" A pause. "Oh, and I'm making progress with my Soulweaver abilities. I can see the future a little better now. Also, I accidentally healed a rock. It's fine. The rock is fine. Rocks can be healed, apparently."

James shook his head, smiling. "That's incredible, Kael. I'm proud of you."

"I'M PROUD OF ME TOO! BUT ENOUGH ABOUT ME—HOW'S THE DRAGON'S REST? ARE YOU BEING TESTED? ARE YOU IN PAIN? DO YOU NEED ME TO COME HEAL YOU?!"

James felt warmth spread through his chest. "I'm fine. I passed the first trial. I'm Grade Eight now."

"GRADE EIGHT?! JAMES, THAT'S AMAZING! YOU'RE BASICALLY A LEGEND NOW! I'M GOING TO TELL EVERYONE—"

"Kael." James laughed. "Breathe."

Kael took a dramatic breath. "RIGHT. BREATHING. I'M GOOD."

James hesitated, then said, "I saw a memory. Of my parents. They loved me. They sacrificed themselves to protect me."

Kael's voice softened. "James... that's beautiful. And sad. But mostly beautiful."

James nodded, even though Kael couldn't see him. "It makes me more determined than ever. To become strong enough. To protect everyone I love. To make their sacrifice worth it."

Kael was quiet for a moment. Then: "You're already making it worth it, James. You're the Last Dragonheart. And you're the best friend I've ever had."

James felt tears prick at his eyes again. "Thank you, Kael."

"ANYTIME! NOW GO REST! YOU HAVE MORE TRIALS TOMORROW! AND REMEMBER—YOU'RE NOT ALONE! I'M HERE! WE'RE ALL HERE!"

James smiled, the golden fire in his chest warm with gratitude.

"I know. And that's what keeps me going."

He ended the connection and lay back on the golden grass, staring up at the swirling sky.

The trials would continue at dawn. He would face them. He would grow stronger. He would reach Grade Nine.

And then he would return to his friends, stronger than ever.

Together.
