The heavy, rhythmic thud of armored iron boots echoed through the subterranean rock, vibrating up through the slate flagstones of the central core room. Beside the glowing crystal, Kael Veyron stood motionless, his palm hovering inches above the warm glass surface of the Dungeon Core.

Beside him, Grik—now taller, broad-shouldered, and wearing a leather harness fitted with carpenter’s chisels—tightened his grip on a heavy iron crowbar. His golden eyes, luminous with the intellect of a Rank 1 Goblin Builder, reflected the crimson ambient pulsing of the core.

"They are at the outer gate, Master," Grik rasped, his voice steady and devoid of the panicked squeaks he had possessed as a starving feral goblin. "Four... no, six heavy treads. Heavy iron plate. Shield-bearers."Full novel: The Last Dungeon Architect — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Corporal Vance leaned heavily on his carved wooden staff, his knuckles white. The former Greyhaven militia soldier pulled his eyes away from the bioluminescent corridor leading from the mushroom farm. "That cadence... it's Captain Vane’s elite breaching vanguard. The 4th Valtherian Purge Column. They don't send scouts to scout anymore, Kael. When Vane moves his heavy vanguard, it means he intends to scour every cubic inch of rock with alchemical fire and cold steel."

Before Kael could reply, a harsh, blaring chime rang out directly within his mind, flashing blood-red across his visual field.

[ALERT: INTRUDERS DETECTED] [LOCATION: FLOOR 1 — OUTER THRESHOLD (IRON DROP GATE)] [INTRUDER COUNT: 6 VALTHERIAN VANGUARD LEGIONNAIRES] [HOSTILITY LEVEL: EXTREME (PURGE EDICT ACTIVE)] [PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: DEFEND THE CORE]

Kael focused his vision, expanding his Architect HUD across the newly integrated matrix of Floor 1: The Stone Lair. In his mind's eye, the entire floor resolved into a three-dimensional wireframe blueprint. He could see the five connected chambers glowing with amber leyline currents, and at the far western edge—the outer iron drop gate—six crimson dots vibrated against the structural boundary.

CLANG.

A deafening impact reverberated through the stone corridor as a heavy steel-headed battering ram struck the reinforced oak and iron portcullis. The iron fittings groaned, but the Level 2 structure held firmly, its load-bearing stone arches absorbing and distributing the kinetic force directly into the surrounding granite bedrock.

"The portcullis won't hold forever against a heavy ram," Vance warned, his voice grim. "If Vane brought alchemical breaching powder, they’ll blow the hinges in minutes."

"They won't get the chance to use powder," Kael said calmly. His voice was cold, tempered by hours of calculating timber loads and stone stress points. "Grik, take position at the Recessed Murder Hole above the antechamber. Do not drop the capstone until all six are inside the kill zone."

"Grik understands," the goblin builder nodded, his thick claws already tapping against his tool belt. "Structural disruption on my mark."

"Vance, stay in the workshop alcove and watch the rear corridor," Kael continued. "If any scout bypasses us through the old ventilation shafts, signal me."

"Understood," Vance agreed, stepping back toward the alcove with his iron shortsword drawn.

Kael turned toward the shadows near the entrance of the core room. "Hound."

From the darkness beneath a vaulted archway, the Slate-Scale Hound emerged. Its armored slate-gray scales rattled like iron shingles as it lowered its massive head, black eyes gleaming with cold, predatory intelligence. It let out a low, sub-audible rumble that rattled the loose gravel on the floor.

"Hold position behind the third archway," Kael commanded mentally through the core connection. "When the trap triggers, cut off their retreat."

The hound bared its needle-like fangs in silent obedience and slunk into the gloom of the antechamber.

Outside the drop gate, harsh human voices echoed through the iron bars.

"Solid iron and seasoned oak!" a heavy voice bellowed—Vanguard Squad Leader Sergeant Vane’s lieutenant, a hulking man in black-enameled plate armor. "Where did a rogue mine get a fortified portcullis? Strike it again! Set the wedge!"

CLANG.

Another massive blow struck the gate. Dust rained down from the ceiling, but Kael watched the System structural overlay. The portcullis's durability dropped slightly—[DURABILITY: 380/450]—but its stone frame remained completely intact.

[CURRENT DUNGEON ESSENCE: 62 DE] [PASSIVE GENERATION: +3.5 DE/HOUR]

Kael focused his mind on the interface. "System, spend 15 DE to reinforce the Iron Drop Gate latch mechanism with an internal stone sliding bolt."

[15 DUNGEON ESSENCE EXPENDED.] [REINFORCING STRUCTURE...] [IRON DROP GATE UPGRADED: SLIDING STONE MORTISE BOLT INSTALLED.] [DURABILITY RESTORED AND INCREASED TO: 520/520.]

Outside, the soldiers let out a collective grunt as they swung the battering ram for a third impact.

CRACK-BANG.

Instead of yielding, the gate felt even sturdier. The recoil jarred the two heavy legionnaires holding the ram, sending them staggering back on the slick gravel.

"What in the Hells?" one soldier growled, his voice muffled by a full-face iron visor. "It's like the bloody stone is growing into the iron!"

"Move aside!" commanded a sharp, authoritative voice from the rear. "Standard breaching charge. Plant the alchemical mortar at the base hinge! Burn the oak!"

Through the wireframe HUD, Kael saw a legionnaire step forward with a brass cylinder leaking pungent, sulfurous blue smoke. The soldier wedged the charge against the bottom of the gate and ignited the fuse.

"They're using blue mortar," Kael muttered. "Alchemical heat."

Instead of panicking, Kael smiled slightly—a craftsman analyzing a flawed design.

"If you blast an iron gate sealed into solid granite," Kael whispered, "all that kinetic force has to go somewhere."

He waited until the fuse burned down to its final inch.

"System: open portcullis release mechanism."

[COMMAND ACCEPTED: LIFTING PORTCULLIS.]

With a sudden, smooth hiss of hidden stone counterweights, the heavy iron-and-oak drop gate shot upward into the ceiling recess.

The soldier holding the lit alchemical charge was caught completely off guard. With no solid surface left to brace against, the soldier stumbled forward into the dark opening, his heavy iron boots slipping on the angled stone threshold.

BOOM!

The alchemical mortar detonated inside the threshold corridor, filling the narrow space with blinding blue light, thick acrid smoke, and roaring heat. Because the portcullis had lifted, the shockwave blew outward into the upper shaft rather than crushing the gate—knocking two shield-bearers off their feet outside.

"In! Move in!" the Squad Leader roared, drawing a broad, glowing rune-sword. "Form shield wall! Clear the tunnel!"

Five heavily armored Valtherian legionnaires surged through the open threshold, their tall tower shields locked side-by-side, creating an unbroken wall of black steel. Their boots crunched across the flagstones as they stepped directly into the 20-meter Zig-Zag Antechamber.

[INTRUDERS HAVE ENTERED FLOOR 1: ZIG-ZAG ANTECHAMBER] [TARGET LOCK CONFIRMED: 5 VANGUARD LEGIONNAIRES]

"Hold..." Kael whispered, watching the crimson wireframe dots move past the first 90-degree blind turn.

The legionnaires moved with military precision, their shields raised to cover both head and chest, short pikes protruding through shield gaps. But as they rounded the sharp turn, the corridor narrowed unexpectedly by two feet—a deliberate architectural constriction Kael had built into the walls.

The shield wall buckled as the right-side legionnaire scraped hard against the rough granite wall.

"Tighter formation!" the Squad Leader ordered, pushing past his subordinate. "Watch the ceiling!"

"Now, Grik!" Kael commanded through the core network.

High above in the darkness of the Recessed Murder Hole, Grik grinned, exposing his pointed teeth. The goblin builder slammed his hand onto a small stone lever, triggering his Structural Disruption skill.

A thin, pre-fractured granite ceiling joist directly above the lead squad shattered with a sharp crack.

A shower of jagged rock fragments and three heavy stone blocks rained down upon the shield wall. The heavy impact slammed into the tops of their tower shields, forcing the legionnaires down onto one knee and breaking their locked formation.

"Crossbows up! Clear the upper recess!" the Squad Leader shouted, trying to raise his glowing sword.

"Floor trap active!" Kael declared.

His mental command triggered the central pressure plate beneath their boots.

THWACK-CLANG!

The floor flagstones dropped three inches, instantly springing the [LEVEL 2 STEEL-TIPPED PRESSURE TRAP] combined with the [ALCHEMICAL SPIKE ARRAY].

Scavenged iron rams tipped with sharpened steel spikes erupted sideways from concealed wall slots, driven by compressed timber springs. Simultaneously, four alchemical needle-jets mounted near floor level sprayed a fine mist of paralytic spore-extract directly beneath their iron greaves.

The heavy rams slammed into the legionnaires' side armor with devastating force.

CRUNCH!

One legionnaire was lifted off his feet and hurled sideways into the stone wall, his breastplate heavily dented. The steel spikes pierced through the joint seams of two other soldiers' leg armor, injecting the potent, paralyzing mushroom extract directly into their bloodstream.

"Argh! My leg... I can't feel my knee!" a soldier screamed, dropping his pike as his leg buckled beneath him.

"Poison! It's a poisonous trap!" the Squad Leader yelled, his eyes wide with shock as he tried to maintain his stance. "Fall back! Retreat to the gate!"

"Grik, seal the rear!" Kael ordered.

From his vantage point, Grik activated Rapid Reinforcement. He slammed his carpenter's hammer against a stone wedge, triggering a secondary wooden portcullis he had built into the upper ceiling archway behind them.

THUD!

A heavy oak-and-iron drop gate slammed down into the stone grooves right behind the squad, completely blocking their retreat back into the upper shaft.

The five legionnaires were now trapped inside the 20-meter zig-zag kill zone, enveloped in thick alchemical smoke, paralyzed by spore poison, and surrounded by engineered stone walls.

From the shadows behind the forward archway, a low, terrifying growl echoed through the corridor.

The Slate-Scale Hound bounded forward, its armored body flashing like dark iron as it lunged at the disoriented Squad Leader. The beast's jaws clamped down on the leader's sword arm, its crushing bite shattering the enameled vambrace and forcing the magical blade to drop clattering to the floor.

"Surrender your weapons," Kael’s voice echoed through the stone corridor, magnified by the acoustic geometry of the vaulted ceiling. "Or my dungeon will dismantle you piece by piece."

The Squad Leader looked up through the smoke, his face pale and dripping with sweat. He looked at his paralyzed men, at the heavy iron drop gates blocking both ends, at the goblin engineer looking down from the ceiling murder hole, and at the massive armored beast growling inches from his throat.

For the first time in his career, an Imperial Vanguard commander realized he wasn't fighting a wild beast or a chaotic monster nest.

He was standing inside a living, calculated fortress designed by a master builder.

Slowly, painfully, the Squad Leader unbuckled his sword belt and let it fall onto the blood-stained flagstones.

"We... we yield," the officer choked out, his voice trembling with defeated shock.

A cascade of golden System notifications erupted before Kael's eyes.

[VICTORY ACHIEVED!] [DEFENDED FLOOR 1 AGAINST VALTHERIAN VANGUARD BREACH SQUAD] [DUNGEON ESSENCE GAINED: +85 DE] [CAPTURIVES SECURED: 5 VALTHERIAN LEGIONNAIRES] [TOTAL DUNGEON ESSENCE: 132 DE]

[DUNGEON DOMAIN EXPANDED: FLOOR 1 SECURITY LEVEL INCREASED TO MAXIMUM.]

Standing in the central core chamber, Kael let out a long, controlled breath, feeling the warm, thrumming leyline current flow back into his body through the glowing Dungeon Core.

He turned toward Grik and Vance, who were stepping into the antechamber to bind the prisoners with heavy iron chains.

The first major assault on Floor 1 had failed miserably. But as Kael looked up toward the distant shaft leading to the surface, he knew Captain Vane himself was still out there—and the true battle for the Silvervein Mine was only just beginning.
