Chapter 14 - The Regent’s Rule

The Last Rule of Death

Thirty creatures turned toward them at once.

Etzel’s first instinct was simple.

Run.

His second instinct was slightly more sophisticated.

Run intelligently.

Then he noticed something.

“They’re not attacking.”

Maerin’s eyes moved across the cavern.

“What?”

“They’re moving.”

Below them, the dormant creatures had risen.

But they weren’t charging.

Not yet.

Several spread toward the side tunnels.

Others moved between the party and the passage behind them.

Six remained around the throne.

Perfectly still.

Etzel’s grip tightened around the hatchet.

“They’re positioning.”

Maerin saw it.

Her expression hardened.

“It’s cutting off retreat.”

The Throneburrow Regent stood.

Slowly.

The throne of black roots seemed reluctant to release it.

Its body unfolded until it towered above the creatures around it.

Long arms.

Layered black armor.

A crown-like growth of bone and mineral spreading from its skull.

Pale veins ran across its body.

Not randomly.

In patterns.

The same patterns that covered the dungeon walls.

Etzel watched the nearest creatures move.

Not a swarm.

A formation.

The Regent raised one hand.

Five creatures shifted at once.

Sivenne exhaled.

“Oh, that’s irritating.”

Etzel looked at her.

“You have a surprisingly mild word for coordinated monster armies.”

“I’m saving the stronger ones.”

Maerin pointed toward the passage behind them.

“DK.”

The knight moved immediately.

No question.

No attempt to charge the throne.

He placed himself between the group and the creatures closing from behind.

Shield forward.

Sword ready.

Etzel noticed that too.

Good.

DK wasn’t trying to win the whole fight.

He was making sure everyone else had the chance to.

The first creatures came.

Three Skitters.

One wall-climber above.

Something heavier behind them.

Etzel raised his hatchet.

“Disable!”

Sivenne glanced at him.

“We’re still doing that?”

“Unless you want to feed him.”

She looked toward the Regent.

“Point taken.”

Maerin’s hand dropped. Claimed Ground.

The front of the cavern changed.

Two Skitters entered her territory.

Their stride broke.

Sivenne struck the first in a leg joint.

Not the neck.

The creature collapsed.

Etzel moved to the second.

Hatchet.

Rear joint.

Twist.

Down.

Alive.

Above them, the wall-climber dropped.

DK’s shield caught it.

He redirected instead of killing it.

The creature smashed against the side wall and fell twitching.

Another wave moved.

The Regent still hadn’t taken a single step.

Etzel looked toward the throne.

Six creatures remained around it.

Why?

Everything else had been assigned a position.

Those six had not moved.

He followed the veins beneath their feet.

Each connected directly to the throne.

His eyes narrowed.

“They’re not guards.”

Maerin forced another Skitter sideways.

“What?”

“The six around him.”

Sivenne glanced toward the throne.

“They look like guards.”

“No.”

Etzel watched the energy flow.

Straight beneath them.

Straight into the roots.

“They’re batteries.”

Maerin’s face changed.

Tessa looked at him.

“Stored energy?”

“Stored food.”

The Regent turned its head.

One of the six creatures stiffened.

Etzel saw the command before he understood it.

The pale veins beneath the creature flashed.

Its body convulsed.

Then collapsed.

Dead.

The dungeon swallowed it immediately.

Energy surged through the roots.

The Regent’s armor brightened.

Etzel stared.

“Oh.”

Sivenne looked at him.

“What?”

“He can kill his own.”

The Regent stepped from the throne.

Stone cracked beneath his foot.

Sivenne’s expression soured.

“That feels unfair.”

“I’m beginning to think fairness isn’t one of his abilities.”

The Regent moved.

Fast.

Far faster than something that large should have.

“Brace!”

DK turned.

The Regent’s arm changed as it swung.

Black root and bone extended from the forearm into a long blade.

DK raised his shield.

The impact hit like falling masonry.

BOOM.

The shield rang.

DK slid three meters across the stone.

His boots never left the ground.

The Regent pressed.

DK caught the second strike.

Then the third.

He did not counter.

Etzel understood why.

Every movement of DK’s shield kept the Regent’s weapon pointed away from Tessa.

Away from Maerin.

Away from him.

The knight was choosing protection over damage.

Good.

Etzel looked toward the six—

five—

creatures surrounding the throne.

“We have to stop the feeding.”

Maerin’s eyes moved between the Regent and the roots.

“How?”

Etzel didn’t know yet.

That answer was becoming exhausting.

The cavern erupted into motion.

Maerin expanded her Claim.

The pale boundary spread across uneven stone.

Immediately, something pushed back.

Her expression changed.

The edge of her territory flickered.

Etzel noticed.

“What?”

“It’s resisting me.”

“The Regent?”

“The dungeon.”

The boundary pulsed.

Then contracted half a meter.

Maerin’s jaw tightened.

“It’s contesting my Claim.”

Etzel looked toward the throne.

“Can it take it?”

Her eyes hardened.

“If I let it.”

The boundary surged outward again.

A Skitter crossing it crashed onto its side.

Sivenne grinned.

“That’s more like it.”

She moved through the opening.

A heavier creature charged her.

Its plated shoulder came down.

Sivenne dodged once.

Barely.

The creature turned faster than expected.

Second charge.

She moved earlier.

The Regent raised two fingers.

The creature changed direction halfway through its attack.

Sivenne cursed and threw herself aside.

Etzel saw it.

The Regent wasn’t simply commanding where they moved.

It was changing commands mid-action.

Sivenne rose.

“That one cheated.”

“The giant crown monster is changing tactics,” Etzel said.

“Thank you, Etzel.”

“You’re welcome.”

She ignored him.

The heavy creature attacked again.

Same opening.

Different finish.

Sivenne watched.

First exchange.

Second.

The Last Answer searching for something beneath the variations.

Not the exact attack.

The rule behind it.

The creature came again.

Its shoulder lowered.

Sivenne moved left.

It corrected right.

She stopped.

Changed direction.

The creature overcommitted.

Her weapon struck the inner leg.

It fell.

Sivenne smiled.

“Found you.”

Etzel looked past her.

The Regent’s crown had flashed before the creature changed direction.

Interesting.

Then another section of the crown lit.

Three wall-climbers moved at once.

Different signal.

Etzel filed it away.

Tessa cried out.

Etzel turned.

One of the larger creatures had slipped past Maerin’s territory.

Its hooked limb struck toward her.

DK was too far.

Etzel moved.

He wasn’t fast enough.

Tessa’s ability triggered.

The blow struck—

and changed.

Etzel felt something slam across his shoulder.

Maerin staggered.

Tessa bent forward.

The original strike had been divided.

Not erased.

Distributed.

Etzel’s arm went numb.

He stared at Tessa.

“You split it.”

She breathed through clenched teeth.

“I told you I was close.”

Sivenne killed—

No.

Stopped herself.

Her weapon changed angle at the last instant.

The creature’s knee broke instead.

It fell.

Maerin recovered.

“Tessa?”

“I can still take one.”

Etzel flexed his damaged arm.

“That’s not the same as should.”

She looked at him.

“Neither is fighting at Level Four.”

“That argument is becoming repetitive.”

“Because it keeps working.”

Another creature came.

No time.

Etzel moved.

The Regent raised its right arm.

Its crown flashed.

Center branch.

The creatures attacking from the rear shifted.

DK adjusted before they arrived.

Not because he knew the command.

Because he understood formations.

His shield turned.

One Skitter crashed into it.

The second tried to pass.

DK’s sword came down across a leg.

Alive.

The third climbed over both.

He struck it with the shield edge and sent it backward.

Etzel watched for half a second.

That was what DK was giving them here.

Not spectacle.

Not overwhelming force.

Space.

Etzel turned back toward the Regent.

The crown flashed again.

Left branch.

The Regent’s root-blade widened.

Area attack.

Etzel’s eyes sharpened.

“Sivenne!”

“I saw it!”

The blade swept.

Sivenne dropped.

Maerin pulled her territory inward.

The shift changed everyone’s footing just enough.

Tessa moved.

Etzel jumped.

The blade passed above him.

Stone exploded behind them.

Etzel landed badly.

His already damaged ribs complained.

He ignored them.

Crown.

Left.

Area strike.

Right?

He waited.

The right side flashed.

The Regent thrust toward DK.

Single target.

Center.

The creatures moved.

Command.

Etzel smiled despite himself.

“There you are.”

Maerin glanced at him.

“What?”

“The crown.”

The Regent attacked again.

Etzel pointed.

“Left branch before wide attack. Right before direct strike. Center before commands.”

Sivenne looked at the crown.

“You’re sure?”

“No.”

She stared at him.

“Fantastic.”

“But I’m getting there.”

The Regent’s center branch flashed.

“Command!”

The surrounding creatures moved.

Correct.

Sivenne grinned.

“Better.”

Etzel’s eyes moved to the roots beneath the throne.

The crown wasn’t the only system.

The entire cavern had layers.

Command.

Feeding.

Reinforcement.

He needed to separate them.

Another creature beside the throne collapsed.

The Regent absorbed it.

Pale light raced through the floor.

One.

Then a second pulse.

Etzel watched.

A third followed.

The Regent’s armor thickened.

A crack DK had made unintentionally while blocking disappeared beneath shifting mineral.

Three pulses.

Etzel frowned.

Again.

A creature died.

Pulse.

One.

Two.

Three.

Reinforcement.

“It has a cycle.”

Maerin was holding three creatures inside her Claim.

“How long?”

“Not time.”

Etzel watched another pulse travel through the throne.

“Pulses.”

Sivenne knocked a creature unconscious.

“That explanation did not improve anything.”

“Three pulses after absorption.”

Maerin understood.

“Then reinforcement.”

“Yes.”

Etzel followed the energy backward.

Three major root clusters.

One left.

One right.

One rising behind the throne into the crown structure.

Different rhythms.

Different functions.

His heartbeat accelerated.

Not fear.

Understanding.

“The roots.”

Maerin looked at him.

“What about them?”

“Three anchors.”

He pointed.

“Left one sends commands.”

Center flash.

Creatures changed formation.

“Right one takes energy.”

Another dead creature dissolved.

Energy flowed through the right-side root cluster.

“And the central one reinforces him.”

Sivenne looked at the three structures.

“So break all three.”

“Preferably before we die.”

“That was implied.”

The first anchor was the left.

Command.

Etzel pointed.

“Sivenne!”

She saw it.

“Of course it’s on the other side of the room.”

Maerin expanded her Ground.

The Regent immediately contested it.

The pale border shuddered.

Maerin’s breath caught.

But the territory held.

“Go.”

Sivenne moved.

Creatures turned toward her.

Etzel shouted directions.

“Three steps left!”

She moved.

A wall-climber dropped.

“Wait!”

She stopped.

The creature landed in front of her.

Maerin twisted the Ground.

Its footing broke.

“Now!”

Sivenne passed.

The Regent’s crown flashed center.

Three creatures shifted to intercept.

DK saw the formation change.

He abandoned the rear corridor for two seconds.

Shield first.

He crashed into the crossing line.

Not killing them.

Breaking the formation.

Sivenne reached the root.

The command anchor pulsed.

Black mineral plates protected the center.

She struck once.

CLANG.

No.

Again.

The Regent turned toward her.

“DK!”

The knight was already moving.

The Regent’s blade came down.

DK’s shield caught it.

The impact cracked stone beneath him.

Sivenne struck the anchor again.

A fracture formed.

Regent blade.

Shield.

Another impact.

DK slid.

Etzel’s stomach tightened.

“Sivenne!”

“I know!”

Third strike.

The anchor shattered.

The cavern changed.

Every creature stopped.

Not all at once.

Almost.

One continued forward.

Another turned the wrong way.

Two collided.

A wall-climber dropped from the ceiling as if it had forgotten why it was there.

Etzel stared.

“That was command.”

Maerin smiled despite the strain.

“One down.”

The Regent roared.

For the first time, it sounded less like a ruler.

More like an animal.

Then it moved toward them itself.

No more throne.

No more distance.

The Regent charged.

Maerin’s Ground hit it.

Its stride slowed.

Barely.

The massive root-blade came down.

DK raised his shield.

BOOM.

A thin crack appeared across the silver surface.

Etzel saw it.

So did DK.

The knight said nothing.

He reset his stance.

The Regent struck again.

DK redirected rather than absorb the full force.

The blade smashed into the floor.

Stone split.

Etzel moved away.

There.

DK wasn’t overpowering it.

He was surviving it intelligently.

Etzel respected that more.

“Right anchor!” Maerin shouted.

Etzel looked.

Energy absorption.

Protected by three now-confused creatures and the Regent itself.

Sivenne moved.

The Regent’s left crown branch flashed.

“Wide!”

Etzel shouted.

Too late.

The blade expanded.

Maerin was trapped between two fallen creatures.

Sivenne had nowhere to go.

Etzel saw Tessa move.

“No—”

Too late.

The attack hit.

Consequence shifted.

Etzel felt the world punch him in the ribs.

Maerin dropped to one knee.

Tessa cried out.

But Sivenne stayed standing.

Three carriers.

Etzel understood.

Tessa had split it.

Pain spread through his side.

He looked at her.

“You split it.”

Tessa was shaking.

Breathing too quickly.

But she managed a smile.

“I told you.”

Etzel almost shouted at her.

Then he saw Sivenne.

Still moving.

Alive because Tessa had made a choice in less than a second.

Etzel swallowed the argument.

“Later.”

“Agreed.”

Sivenne reached the right anchor.

Maerin forced herself upright. Claimed Ground twisted around the Regent’s leg.

Not enough to trap it.

Enough to delay.

Sivenne attacked.

First strike. Crack.

Second.

The Regent turned.

DK blocked.

Third.

The anchor broke.

The effect was immediate.

A creature died near the throne.

The floor began to absorb it.

Then stopped.

Its body remained half-sunken.

Pale energy rose—

and dispersed.

The Regent’s armor did not brighten.

Etzel stared.

“Absorption’s gone!”

Sivenne grinned.

“Two.”

The Regent roared again.

The central crown root pulsed.

And every remaining vein in its armor blazed.

Two anchors broken.

One remained.

The hardest one.

Etzel looked toward the central root behind the throne.

Protected.

Not by creatures now.

By the Regent itself.

Sivenne joined him.

“I can’t reach that while it’s standing there.”

Etzel watched the crown.

“Then we move him.”

Maerin breathed heavily.

“My Claim won’t hold him for long.”

“It doesn’t need to.”

“How long?”

Etzel looked toward DK.

The knight’s shield was cracked.

His armor carried new marks.

He still stood between the Regent and Tessa.

“One second.”

DK looked at him.

“I can give you that.”

Etzel nodded.

Not more.

He didn’t ask for more.

Sivenne looked at the Regent.

“I’m seeing a pattern.”

“What?”

“It changes, but the principle doesn’t.”

Etzel listened.

“After the third reinforcement pulse, it protects the crown.”

Maerin glanced at him.

Etzel’s eyes moved to the central root.

Third pulse.

Protection.

Something bothered him.

The Regent absorbed—

No.

Right anchor was gone.

It couldn’t absorb anymore.

But the central root still pulsed with energy already stored in the throne.

One.

Two.

The Regent moved closer to the central structure.

Sivenne was right.

It was preparing to defend it.

Etzel stared.

“No.”

Maerin looked at him.

“No?”

“He doesn’t protect it after the third pulse.”

Sivenne frowned.

“I just watched him do it.”

“He moves to protect it after.”

Etzel watched the central root brighten.

“Which means…”

The second pulse came.

“…before the third…”

The crown root opened.

Black plates separated slightly as energy built between them.

Etzel smiled.

“…he exposes it.”

Sivenne understood.

“Oh.”

Maerin looked at the root.

“How long?”

“Maybe a second.”

DK spoke.

“Enough.”

Etzel looked at him.

The knight had already repositioned.

Shield forward.

Etzel looked at the hatchet in his own hand.

The handle was cracked.

Worse than before.

The blade chipped.

It had carried him from the forest to this.

Probably farther than it should have.

He tightened his grip.

“One more job.”

Sivenne looked at him.

“Are you talking to the axe again?”

“Don’t ruin this.”

The central root pulsed.

One.

The Regent moved.

Sivenne stepped forward.

Not attacking.

Baiting.

The Regent’s right crown branch flashed.

Direct strike.

Sivenne moved early.

The Regent corrected.

Exactly as she wanted.

Two.

Maerin placed both hands toward the floor.

Her Claim collapsed inward.

Every part of it.

All the territory she had spread across the cavern compressed into one small area beneath the Regent.

“Now!”

The Regent’s feet locked.

Its head snapped toward Maerin.

Sivenne attacked.

The Regent turned to answer her.

Not because the strike was dangerous.

Because The Last Answer made it look dangerous.

Etzel ran.

Third pulse beginning.

The crown root opened.

The Regent saw him.

Too late.

It ripped one leg free of Maerin’s Claim.

The root-blade came around.

DK moved.

No attack.

No flourish.

Just a shield placed exactly where it needed to be.

The Regent struck.

BOOM.

The crack in DK’s shield spread.

A piece of the outer rim broke away.

DK staggered.

But the blade stopped.

For one second.

Etzel passed him.

The crown root was open.

He raised the hatchet.

Struck.

CRACK.

The root fractured.

Not enough.

Etzel pulled back.

The hatchet handle groaned.

Again.

CRACK.

The fracture widened.

The Regent roared.

DK’s shield shifted.

The blade was beginning to push through.

“Etzel!”

“I know!”

Third strike.

The hatchet hit.

The handle snapped.

For half a second, Etzel held nothing but broken wood.

The blade remained buried inside the root.

He stared.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Then the root split.

A line of pale light erupted through the fracture.

Etzel threw himself backward.

The entire central structure shattered.

The cavern went dark.

Not completely.

Enough.

Every pale vein died at once.

The Regent froze.

Its blade stopped against DK’s shield.

The remaining creatures collapsed.

The throne cracked.

The System appeared.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

│ SYSTEM NOTIFICATION │

│ > Regent Authority: Severed │

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Then:

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

│ SYSTEM NOTIFICATION │

│ > Dungeon Control: Destabilized │

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Etzel hit the floor hard.

No hatchet.

No breath.

But smiling.

“Three.”

Maerin nearly laughed.

“Three.”

The Regent turned toward him.

No veins.

No throne.

No command network.

No reinforcements.

Just itself.

Sivenne raised her weapon.

“Now?”

Etzel pushed himself upright.

“Now we kill it.”

The last phase was shorter.

And worse.

The Regent had lost its Authority.

It had not lost its strength.

It attacked like something furious at discovering it could be mortal.

DK held the worst of it.

Not every strike.

He couldn’t.

Maerin controlled inches rather than rooms.

A foot.

A turn.

Half a step.

Enough.

Tessa stopped trying to carry everything.

She chose.

One strike diverted.

Another allowed through.

Consequences managed instead of erased.

Etzel had no weapon.

So he watched.

Called.

Moved.

“Left!”

Sivenne shifted.

The Regent thrust.

Missed.

“Center!”

Maerin tightened her Claim.

The Regent’s knee dipped.

“Now!”

Sivenne struck.

The Last Answer had finally caught up.

Not to one attack.

To the Regent.

Its variations.

Its corrections.

Its preference for recovering through the left side after a failed thrust.

Its habit of raising the blade before turning.

Its instinct to protect the broken crown even though the crown no longer mattered.

Sivenne knew it now.

The Regent attacked.

She was already gone.

The blade hit stone.

She entered inside its reach.

The Regent tried to turn left.

Maerin’s Ground held the foot.

Half a second.

That was enough.

Sivenne’s weapon went beneath the broken crown.

Into the gap where black mineral met bone.

Deep.

The Regent stopped.

Its arm rose.

Tessa braced.

DK moved.

But nothing came.

The Regent stood for one impossible second.

Then collapsed.

The cavern shook.

Silence followed.

Real silence.

Etzel stared at the body.

Nobody moved.

Then the System arrived.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

Etzel’s breath caught.

A second message.

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Then:

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

│ SYSTEM NOTIFICATION │ │ > Rank Progression awarded. │

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Warmth ignited inside him.

Not the small settling warmth of Level Four.

This was deeper.

His heartbeat struck once.

Hard.

The sensation spread through muscle.

Bone.

Nerves.

And something beneath all of them.

His soul.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Etzel stopped breathing.

The next message formed.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Sivenne said something.

He didn’t hear it.

Maerin moved toward him.

Her voice sounded distant.

Because the System had not finished.

The dungeon disappeared from Etzel’s attention.

A new notification filled his vision.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

└────────────────────────────────────────┘

Another.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

Etzel stared.

Then three empty frames appeared.

His heartbeat accelerated.

Text formed above them.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

Etzel’s eyes widened.

SSS.

Not S.

Not SS.

SSS.

Three of them.

A timer appeared.

The first option began to resolve.

Etzel read the name.

┌────────────────────────────────────────┐

The second began appearing beside it.

The third followed.

Etzel stared at the three choices.

For once—

he didn’t make a joke.
