THE LAST SAVE

The moment Arin committed his will to the prompt, the system did not deliver an epiphany. It delivered a biological furnace.

The reaction began deep within the marrow of his long bones—a sudden, deep-seated spike of radiating heat that felt less like warmth and more like caustic lime slaking in water.

Arin dropped to his knees on the steel diamond-plate floor of the maintenance cubicle, his hands catching his weight against the bolted base of the monitoring console. His knuckles turned stark white against the grease-stained metal.Full novel: THE LAST SAVE — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

> [BIOLOGICAL RESTRUCTURING INITIALIZED]

> [ATTRIBUTE TARGET: ENDURANCE (+3)]

> [METABOLIC TAX: ACTIVE (3.0x Baseline Consumption)]

> [DRAW: CALORIC AND HYDRATION RESERVES]

His heart rate detonated.

Within ten seconds, his resting pulse surged past one hundred and sixty beats per minute, pounding against his eardrums with the deafening rhythm of a steam trip-hammer. Sweat didn't merely bead on his skin; it poured, drenching his torn shirt and running in stinging rivers across the scabbed bone scratches on his cheek.

Despite the sweltering 34°C air of the Sump, a violent, involuntary tremor seized his core.

Arin recognized the physiological signs: acute shivering thermogenesis. His body was burning massive amounts of chemical energy to supply the raw cellular synthesis demanded by the rewrite.

Deep within his chest and torso, every capillary bed seemed to dilate simultaneously. He could feel the pulling, tearing ache in his vascular walls as the system forced rapid endothelial expansion, micro-fracturing and reinforcing connective tissue, thickening the fibrous sheaths anchoring his intercostal muscles and diaphragm.

His stomach clenched in a sharp, dry heave.

The dense ration brick he had forced down three minutes earlier was being dissolved at terrifying speed, gastric acids and enzymes working in overdrive to convert carbohydrates and lipids straight into the bloodstream to feed the metabolic debt.

> [CALORIC RESERVES CONSUMED: RAPID GLUCOSE DRAW]

> [HYDRATION RESERVES: ACCELERATED DEPLETION]

> [CURRENT STAMINA: 62 → 24/90]

Keep breathing, Arin commanded himself, his teeth locked so tight his jaw joints ached. Slow the diaphragm. Regulate the oxygen intake.

He didn't fight the tremors. Fighting a full-body metabolic spasm would only cause muscular micro-tears. He let his forehead rest against the cold iron flange of the console, deliberately slowing his exhalations, matching the intake of humid, sulfurous air to the violent cadence of his pulse.

The acute phase lasted four agonizing minutes.

Then, as suddenly as it had spiked, the internal fire began to subside.

The violent shivering slowed to a dull, rhythmic twitch in his calves and forearms. The suffocating heat in his chest cooled from a boiling furnace into a broad, solid radiation of warmth that settled deep into his ribcage, spine, and major joints.

His breathing deepened. His diaphragm moved through a deeper, more efficient stroke, pulling air into parts of his lungs that had never worked so hard before.

A series of cool, blue notifications scrolled across his retinas:

> [BIOLOGICAL RESTRUCTURING COMPLETE]

> [ATTRIBUTE COMMITTED: ENDURANCE 4 → 7]

> [MAXIMUM HP MODIFIED: 110 → 125]

> [MAXIMUM STAMINA MODIFIED: 90 → 105]

> [CARDIOVASCULAR BASELINE EXPANDED]

> [PASSIVE STAMINA RECOVERY RATE: +1 STAMINA / 8 SECONDS]

> [PASSIVE UNLOCKED: THERMAL METABOLIC STRESS TOLERANCE (+15%)]

Arin remained seated on the diamond-plate, his back against the console, letting the new cardiovascular rhythm settle. Thirty-two seconds passed in absolute stillness as his expanded lungs cleared the metabolic residue from his blood, reclaiming four points of spent energy:

> [CURRENT HP: 86/125]

> [CURRENT STAMINA: 24 → 28/105]

His maximum health pool had expanded by fifteen points, but his current health remained firmly at eighty-six. The system had enlarged the structural framework, but it had not handed out a single drop of free blood or tissue.

His stamina pool had taken the brunt of the shock, crashing nearly forty points during the cellular burn, but the recovery interval had dropped from ten seconds down to eight. With his cardiovascular engine rebuilt, every breath cleared lactic acid faster.

Arin unslung his pack with hands that still carried a faint, residual tremor.

He retrieved his open water bottle. His mouth felt like it was coated in dry chalk, the intense thermal burn having sweated out hundreds of milliliters of moisture. He tilted the bottle and took two long, deliberate swallows, feeling the liquid absorb instantly through the parched lining of his esophagus.

He checked the remaining volume: roughly sixty percent full. One unopened bottle remained secured in the main pouch.

> [HYDRATION: RESTABILIZED]

Arin wiped his dripping face with his sleeve and looked at his status display:

> [UNALLOCATED ATTRIBUTE POINTS: 3]

Three points still banked.

He felt the temptation—the visceral urge to commit them into Strength or Agility to complete the set. But his analytical mind held the boundary firm. His muscles were still trembling from the metabolic exhaustion of the first rewrite; committing another three points now would burn through his remaining hydration and plunge him straight into systemic shock.

Three points in reserve. Keep the advantage flexible.

Arin pushed himself up from the floor.

His boots felt heavier, but his center of gravity was unmistakably more stable. When he rolled his bandaged shoulder, the deep pull in his deltoid was buffered by a denser network of supporting muscle. The chassis was stronger.

He turned his flashlight onto the monitoring console he had been bracing against.

The unit was an ancient pneumatic control station, its brass dials broken and green with verdigris. But riveted directly to the steel faceplate was a stamped sheet of thin precursor zinc—a maintenance schematic.

Arin leaned closer, his heightened Perception picking out the fine, acid-etched lines:

> [FACILITY SCHEMATIC: SECTOR 2-B — FLOTATION & SLURRY DRAINAGE]

The diagram laid out the geometry of the Retention Sump:

* Their current position was Service Catwalk 9, hovering fifteen meters above the settling basins on the northern perimeter.

* Three hundred meters south sat the Central Intake Redoubt, which anchored the heavy transit cranes and the spiral incline down into the refinery floor.

* Spanning the entire floor between them lay the Sludge Settling Channels, bridged only by the moving steel rails of the Automated Scraper Rakes.

* Running beneath the floor of the Sump was a subterranean bypass marked Under-Sump Slurry Flue 4—a high-volume drainage conduit leading directly to the primary cracking furnaces of Level 2, bypassing the Redoubt entirely.

* At the southern apex of its sweep, the carriage of Rake 4 traveled directly over the maintenance lip of Flue 4, pausing for an eight-second reversal dwell before beginning its return stroke across the basin.

An eight-second window, Arin noted. Directly over the intake.

Two sharp, metallic raps struck the outside of the steel cubicle door.

Mira's signal.

Arin pulled the pike head tight in its loop, checked the hound-bone dagger at his belt, and threw the internal dog-latch.

He pushed the door open and stepped out onto the suspended steel grating.

The heavy, humid air of the Sump hit his face, but with his Endurance raised to seven, the suffocating heat no longer felt like a weight crushing his trachea. His chest expanded easily against the draft.

Mira stood by the catwalk railing, her blade drawn and held low. She turned her head as he emerged, her dark eyes flicking over his sweat-soaked hair, the flush in his neck, and then down to his stance.

Her eyebrows raised a fraction.

"You're standing," she whispered, her voice tight against the roar of the slurry vats below. "And you didn't vomit your spleen onto the deck."

"The calories gave the system something to burn besides me," Arin said, his voice level. "Endurance is at seven. Recovery rate is down to eight seconds."

Mira stared at him for a long moment, then let out a low, grim chuckle. "Seven Endurance on Level 1 would make you a minor warlord. On Level 2, it just means it takes slightly longer to boil you."

She gestured with the tip of her blade across the chasm toward the Intake Redoubt.

The yellow lantern light on the fortified platform had shifted. Three torches were moving rapidly along the upper barricade, and a long, low acoustic horn—a mournful, metallic brass groan—boomed through the overhead conduits.

HOOOOORN.

The sound rolled through the emerald vapor, vibrating straight through the handrails.

"Brant's message hit the wire," Mira said, her face hardening. "The Redoubt just declared a lockdown. They’ve raised the transit cranes and oiled the lower walkways. If anyone tries to cross the suspension spans, they’ll dump flaming pitch."

Arin looked past the Redoubt, down toward the vast, dark expanse of the settling basins where the massive, train-sized scraper rakes crawled across the surface of the black sludge.

"We don't cross the spans," Arin said, stepping to the railing.

Mira looked at him, frowning. "Every other walkway is cut off. You want to swim in chemical runoff?"

"The console inside has a maintenance plate," Arin replied, pointing down toward the nearest moving scraper rake sixty meters below them. "Those rakes don't just clear surface froth. They empty into Slurry Flue 4—a drainage conduit that runs directly beneath the Sump and exits past the Redoubt's perimeter. At the far end of its track, Rake 4's carriage passes directly over the intake lip of Flue 4 for an eight-second dwell window before reversing stroke."

Mira peered over the edge into the churning, emerald-lit abyss.

"Those rakes cycle every twelve minutes," she whispered. "Their carriage is solid steel. But to reach Flue 4, we’d have to drop onto the moving arm, ride it across the open basin, and slip through the intake lip while forty tons of reciprocating iron are actively grinding."

Arin adjusted his pack straps, feeling the solid, dense resilience of his upgraded frame anchoring the load.

"A machine that runs on a twelve-minute cycle has predictable timing," Arin said, his fingers resting on the hilt of his bone dagger. "People on a fortified platform don't. We take the machine."
