Wealth hides many things beautifully.

Fear usually learns how to dress for the occasion.

Night settled softly across Rosary Island by the time the remaining conversations finally quieted around the cabins.Full novel: The Living Scripture: The World Unmasked – Arc 3 — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Lanterns glowed warmly between the stone pathways while distant ocean waves rolled steadily against the cliffs surrounding the island below.

Most of the twenty-eight drifted toward their rooms afterward, carrying lingering exhaustion from the Forum, the Grey Passage, and the growing weight surrounding the world outside their temporary refuge.

Max disappeared again shortly after sunset.

This time Seth waited almost an hour before following her.

He found her near the far eastern cliffs overlooking the ocean where the island dropped sharply into endless darkness below.

Moonlight painted silver across the water while cold wind moved steadily through the tall grass surrounding the cliffside.

Max stood near the edge with her head tilted slightly upward toward the stars.

Perfectly still.

Seth approached quietly afterward before stopping beside her without speaking immediately.

The silence between them now carried familiarity and comfort.

“You have been standing here long enough for me to assume you are either communing with Heaven or planning crimes,” he said eventually.

A soft smile tugged faintly at Max’s mouth afterward, though her eyes never left the sky above them.

“I was wondering when you would ask.”

Seth moved closer before sliding both arms around her gently from behind.

“You expected patience from me?”

“I expected dramatic concern eventually.”

“You vanished into the ocean earlier.”

“You watched me?”

“I always watch you.”

That answer softened something inside her immediately.

Seth rested his chin lightly against her shoulder afterward while the ocean wind curled softly around them both.

“You know I was never angry about the Jason situation,” he murmured.

“I would need to become exceptionally foolish before holding grudges against you.”

Max finally laughed softly beneath her breath afterward.

“That sentence sounded dangerously romantic.”

“I married you. My reputation disappeared long ago.”

Her laughter faded more quietly after that.

For several moments she simply stood there inside his arms listening to the waves below them and the distant movement of the island behind them.

Then Max slowly turned within his hold until she faced him fully beneath the stars overhead.

Something gentler moved across her expression now.

“You fear losing me again,” she said softly.

Seth’s silence answered her immediately.

Max stepped closer afterward before slowly wrapping both arms around his waiste and drawing herself against him.

Her forehead rested lightly beneath his chin while ocean wind moved softly through her hair around them both.

Seth lowered his head instinctively afterward until his forehead rested against hers while his arms tightened around her waist.

“You have permission to feel safe with me,” she whispered.

“Safe knowing I will remain beside you.” Her voice softened further afterward.

“I carry the burden of leadership because I choose to. I protect the team because they are ours to protect. I guide them because somebody must.”

The wind shifted softly around them while silver and gold flickered faintly beneath her skin.

“But none of those things will ever take me away from you again.”

Something tightened visibly inside Seth’s expression afterward.

“You do not have to stand waiting for me anymore,” she murmured quietly.

“You do not have to fear waking one day and finding me gone.”

Seth closed his eyes briefly at that.

“I never learned how to stop expecting loss,” he admitted softly.

Max held him slightly tighter afterward.

“Then keep choosing me until your heart finally believes it.”

Silence wrapped gently around them again while the stars stretched endlessly overhead and the ocean rolled steadily against the cliffs below.

And for the first time since the Upper Room, a small part of Seth finally allowed himself to believe her.

Then Seth’s expression shifted slightly.

“What were you listening to earlier?” he asked quietly.

Max remained still at first.

Then she finally lifted one hand loosely toward the sky above them.

“I’m not listening upward,” she answered softly.

“I’m listening outward.”

Seth frowned slightly beside her.

Max lowered her hand again afterward.

“When I was in the Upper Room, I could see parts of the world beneath me,” she explained quietly.

“Fragments. Pressure points. Places carrying unusual spiritual movement.”

Seth listened carefully now.

“I can still do it sometimes,” she continued.

“Only now it works better when I tilt my head upward.” A faint grin appeared afterward.

“Better blood flow apparently.”

Seth laughed softly against her shoulder.

“That may be the least divine explanation you have ever given me.”

“It remains medically sound.”

Moonlight shimmered softly across the ocean below while Max’s expression slowly grew quieter again.

“I cannot see everything,” she admitted afterward.

“Only places carrying enough spiritual pressure to pull my attention naturally.”

“Like Rothmans?” Seth asked.

Max nodded slowly.

“They are alright for now. The religious leaders are panicking quietly though.” Her mouth twitched faintly afterward.

“Apparently, the tornado incident where Alec nearly redesigned half the surrounding district with lightning still traumatized portions of their town.”

“That feels partially fair.”

“Alec considered it excellent architecture redesign.”

Seth smiled faintly afterward before his expression sharpened slightly again.

“What else did you see?”

Max remained silent for several seconds this time.

Far below them, waves crashed softly against the cliffs surrounding the island.

“Two countries are threatening each other over sea rights,” she answered at last.

“Entire governments shouting over invisible lines drawn across water while people beneath them prepare for war like frightened children holding explosives.”

Seth’s expression darkened slightly.

“They are serious?”

“They always are,” Max murmured.

“Humanity has a terrifying habit of placing pride above survival.”

The wind strengthened briefly around the cliffs afterward while gold and silver flickered faintly beneath Max’s skin for half a second before fading again.

Seth noticed immediately.

“You think we may have to intervene.”

Max finally looked toward him fully now.

“Maybe.”

The answer lingered heavily between them afterward.

Far above Rosary Island, the stars continued shining peacefully across the night sky.

And somewhere beneath reality itself, the Grey Passage continued listening to the world.

Three peaceful days passed before the invitation arrived.

The Grey Passage training consumed most of that time.

Groups entered the dimensional current six at a time beneath Sarah’s guidance while Grace accompanied every rotation wrapping woven shields around each team whenever emotional instability surged too heavily inside the Passage.

Some adapted quickly.

Others struggled harder than expected.

Marcus nearly punched Andrew during one session after the Passage amplified buried irritation between them while Victor spent fifteen uninterrupted minutes arguing with invisible people nobody else could see.

Jamey somehow enjoyed himself throughout the process.

That worried everyone. This chapter was copied from g.com without permission.

By the fourth day, however, the team moved through the Passage with noticeably greater control.

Breathing stabilized faster.

Emotional pressure loosened more easily.

Even Sarah looked calmer afterward as though teaching the others helped her understand the Grey Passage differently herself.

Rosary Island slowly returned portions of them to themselves.

Then they finally went home.

The estate remained quiet when the convoy returned shortly after sunset.

Warm exterior lights glowed softly across the sprawling property while distant wind moved through the surrounding trees in slow rhythmic waves.

Several members immediately disappeared toward their rooms while others collapsed across couches and lounge chairs carrying shopping bags, travel cases, and enough food wrappers to concern Samantha spiritually.

Elizabeth noticed the envelope first.

“Oh,” she murmured while reaching toward the large black-and-gold invitation resting neatly inside the estate mailbox near the front entrance.

“Fancy people handwriting.”

That immediately drew attention.

Jamey wandered closer first.

“If this becomes another trial summons, I formally nominate Alec.”

“I remain innocent,” Alec answered calmly while carrying six shopping bags in one hand.

“You destroyed two mannequins arguing about suits.”

“They lacked structural integrity.”

Elizabeth ignored them entirely before carefully opening the heavy envelope.

Gold lettering shimmered faintly across the thick ivory paper beneath the estate lights while portions of ancient script moved subtly along the borders like living ink.

The atmosphere shifted almost immediately afterward.

Elizabeth slowly lifted her eyes from the invitation.

“The Twenty-Eight are hereby formally summoned as honored guests,” she read carefully, “to attend the Grand Sect Gathering hosted within the Celestine Conservatory beneath Mount Theodosia in the nation of Renecia.”

Silence followed briefly.

Then Emily blinked rapidly.

“That sounds expensive.”

“It is expensive,” Adrian answered immediately.

Andrew frowned slightly afterward.

“I thought ordinary people could not reach Mount Theodosia.”

“They cannot,” Hannah replied quietly while stepping closer toward the invitation.

“The mountain paths distort for uninvited travelers. Entire roads disappear into fog if the mountain rejects you.”

Grace looked visibly fascinated afterward.

“The mountain chooses who arrives?”

“Something there does,” Seth answered calmly from farther behind them.

Even Max’s expression sharpened slightly now.

She took the invitation gently from Elizabeth afterward before continuing aloud.

“The Grand Sect Gathering has been called following the Obsidian Forum proceedings and the formal recognition of the Twenty-Eight.” Her eyes moved lower across the page.

“Attendance requested in five days.”

“Requested,” Jamey repeated thoughtfully.

“That wording feels aggressively mandatory.”

“It is,” Samantha answered.

The estate grew quieter afterward while portions of the team exchanged uncertain glances.

Everybody understood what this meant.

The Forum introduced the twenty-eight publicly.

The Celestine Conservatory would place them before every major sect, elder, spiritual authority, political influence, and hidden power structure across Renecia itself.

Alec exhaled slowly afterward.

“This sounds dangerously formal.”

“It absolutely is,” Adrian replied.

Caleb looked toward the others with visible concern.

“So now we attend rich spiritual politics inside a hidden mountain?”

“Yes,” Max answered calmly while folding the invitation closed again.

Jamey pointed immediately afterward.

“I require warning before entering elite environments. My vocabulary changes around wealthy people.”

“We noticed,” Claire informed him.

Seth glanced briefly toward the invitation afterward before exhaling softly.

“This was inevitable,” he said calmly.

“The Forum forced every major sect to acknowledge us publicly whether they wanted to or not.”

Max folded the invitation carefully afterward.

“The Conservatory invitation itself is not the problem,” she said quietly.

“The hidden reason behind it is.”

Unease moved subtly through portions of the group afterward.

Hannah’s expression sharpened slightly.

“You think there is another agenda attached to this gathering.”

“There always is,” Adrian answered before Seth could.

Silence lingered briefly afterward while the reality of the invitation settled more heavily across the estate entrance.

Somewhere deeper inside the manor, music drifted faintly through the halls while warm lights glowed softly against the surrounding windows.

The atmosphere still carried traces of home and safety despite the tension slowly returning around them.

Then Max looked toward Seth beside her with complete seriousness resting across her face for nearly two full seconds.

“Well honey,” she said smoothly afterward, “you are going to have to cover the wardrobe expenses for the group.”

Seth narrowed his eyes immediately.

“You say things like that with dangerous confidence.”

“Yes,” Max answered calmly.

“Because we need to smell expensive.”

Jamey pointed toward her instantly.

“She raises phenomenal arguments under pressure.”

“I support this financially abusive marriage,” Caleb added.

Jason folded both arms afterward while nodding solemnly toward Seth.

“Stand strong, brother. They break us slowly.”

Seth stared at all of them for several seconds before finally sighing toward the night sky above the estate.

“I regret saving any of you.”

Laughter erupted across the entrance afterward while Max leaned comfortably against his side already looking entirely victorious.

Far away beyond the estate grounds, hidden high within Mount Theodosia, the Celestine Conservatory waited beneath layers of mist and silence.

And somewhere inside that mountain, powerful people were already preparing for their arrival.

Mount Theodosia revealed itself slowly through the mountain fog.

Massive cliffs rose endlessly into the night sky while narrow stone roads curved dangerously along the mountainside beneath drifting silver mist.

Far below them, scattered lights from the lower valleys of Renecia shimmered faintly through the darkness like distant fallen stars swallowed by the mountains themselves.

Then the Celestine Conservatory appeared.

Even the twenty-eight grew quieter afterward.

The structure stretched across the upper mountainside in layered terraces of white stone, towering glass, flowing water, and suspended gardens illuminated beneath soft golden light.

Waterfalls descended directly through portions of the architecture before disappearing beneath glowing marble walkways while enormous crystalline chandeliers shimmered visibly behind the vast glass walls overlooking the cliffs below.

Ancient trees grew directly through sections of the Conservatory itself as though the mountain allowed the structure to exist rather than supporting it.

The place felt sacred.

And expensive beyond reason.

A long procession of polished black vehicles eventually curved toward the elevated entrance overlooking the mountain cliffs.

Engines quieted gradually afterward while attendants dressed in dark formal attire moved carefully through the drifting mist surrounding the upper terrace.

Inside the vehicles, the twenty-eight looked very different tonight.

Tailored suits replaced combat gear.

Dark formal fabrics carried subtle silver and gold detailing beneath the Conservatory lights while elegant gowns flowed between sharp jewelry, polished watches, refined makeup, expensive fragrances, and carefully styled hair.

Luxury clung naturally to the group tonight without overpowering the discipline still visible beneath their appearance.

They looked dangerous anyway.

The lead vehicle finally stopped near the grand staircase overlooking the Conservatory entrance.

Jason stepped out first.

His sharp eyes immediately swept across the upper terraces, balconies, entrances, security positions, reflective glass surfaces, and the movement of guests gathering beyond the enormous crystal doors ahead.

Then Seth emerged beside him.

Black formal fabric rested sharply against his frame while silver detailing moved subtly along the sleeves beneath the Conservatory lights.

Max stepped out moments later beside him, wearing flowing black and gold formalwear that shimmered faintly whenever mountain wind curled around her.

Gold and silver living scripture drifted softly beneath portions of her skin tonight, almost lazily as though even her power understood the importance of appearances here.

The remaining members gradually followed afterward.

Tier One formed instinctively first.

Then Tier Two.

Then Three.

Then Four.

No discussion preceded it.

The formation existed naturally now.

Several guests standing near the upper staircases slowly stopped speaking altogether afterward.

Inside the Conservatory itself, portions of the music softened unevenly while conversations lowered into quieter murmurs spreading steadily throughout the enormous chamber beyond the glass walls.

Elder sect leaders turned visibly toward the entrance now while Magisters exchanged restrained expressions beneath the warm chandelier light overhead.

Then the Conservatory reacted.

The enormous reflective pools surrounding the upper terraces rippled softly all at once.

Chandeliers flickered faintly overhead before stabilizing again while thin streams of water descending through the marble architecture shifted direction briefly like unseen currents suddenly moved through the mountain itself.

Nobody missed it.

Unease spread instantly beneath portions of the gathered elite afterward.

Lady Elsa stood waiting near the upper entrance alongside Eric and several high-ranking Magisters dressed in ceremonial formal attire.

Even Eric looked momentarily distracted by the reaction surrounding the Conservatory itself.

Lady Elsa recovered first.

A faint smile touched her mouth afterward.

“It appears Mount Theodosia acknowledges your arrival,” she said calmly.

Jamey glanced upward immediately afterward.

“I preferred when buildings ignored us.”

Emily elbowed him sharply.

The twenty-eight finally began ascending the grand staircase afterward in their natural procession while mountain fog drifted slowly around the outer terraces beneath the night sky above them.

Their pace remained unhurried, each step carrying the same quiet certainty as they climbed together like people fully aware the world was already watching them.

Leader Bo stood near the western terrace balcony, surrounded by several influential elders already watching the twenty-eight with visible irritation resting openly across his face.

He made absolutely no effort to lower his voice.

“So this is what the spiritual world applauds now,” he remarked coldly while portions of the surrounding leaders listened carefully.

“Dramatic entrances. Public spectacles. Theatrics wrapped in expensive clothing.”

Some of the leaders looked visibly uncomfortable with Bo’s remarks while others agreed openly enough for surrounding groups to notice.

The twenty-eight ignored them entirely.

Instead, portions of the team drifted naturally toward the enormous banquet tables stretching across the eastern terraces beneath the Conservatory chandeliers.

Crystal displays, flowing fountains, exotic fruits, expensive meats, glowing desserts, and carefully plated pastries filled the marble surfaces in arrangements beautiful enough to intimidate ordinary people before they even tasted anything.

Rachel stared openly at one particularly colorful tray afterward.

“Are these edible?” she whispered carefully while nudging Leah beside her.

“All I see are bright colors and regret.”

Leah studied the display briefly before immediately pulling Marcus closer by the arm.

“You are technically royalty,” she informed him seriously.

“Can we eat these without dying?”

Marcus burst out laughing instantly.

“Test it first and let me know.”

Jamey never waited for invitations.

He already started eating.

“These taste like money,” he announced dramatically afterward while pointing toward a tray of tiny pastries nearby.

Thomas shuffled beside him moments later before staring directly into his eyes.

“You are not overeating tonight and pretending food has betrayed you tomorrow,” he warned calmly.

“Behave yourself.”

Jamey scoffed immediately afterward before pointing broadly toward the surrounding women nearby.

“Why do you think we brought this many healers?”

Claire nearly inhaled her drink laughing while Samantha slowly lowered her glass, looking at Jamey as though wondering whether prison food could really be that bad.

Elsewhere across the ballroom, Max stood speaking quietly with Lady Elsa and Lady Tash beneath one of the suspended crystal gardens overlooking the inner waterways flowing through the Conservatory.

Then Thania appeared.

Max somehow sensed her before she fully arrived.

“I sincerely hope,” Max said dryly without even turning around yet, “that whatever disaster you are planning tonight comes with financial compensation.”

Thania immediately wrapped both arms around Max dramatically from behind before speaking in an excessively high-pitched voice.

“I missed you, my queen.”

Lady Elsa and Tash both failed to suppress their amusement afterward.

Thania leaned slightly around Max afterward before whispering loudly enough for everybody nearby to hear.

“You would not mind if I borrowed her briefly, would you?”

Both women smiled and shook their heads immediately.

Thania grabbed Max’s hand afterward before pulling her toward the opposite side of the ballroom.

“Please,” she begged dramatically.

“Please and exceptionally pretty please introduce me properly to the handsome man standing beside your gorgeous husband.”

Max glanced toward Seth first.

Then Jason.

Then back toward Thania.

“Jason?” she asked flatly.

“He is too old for you.”

Thania stomped her heel against the marble floor immediately afterward.

“He absolutely is not. There are barely ten years between us.”

“There are civilizations younger than Jason.”

Jason looked deeply offended from across the ballroom.

“I can hear you.”

“That sounds medically fortunate.”

Even Seth laughed quietly afterward.

Max eventually sighed dramatically before motioning for Thania to follow her.

The two women crossed portions of the ballroom together beneath the Conservatory lights while surrounding conversations continued drifting softly around them.

Max reached the men first before immediately grabbing Jason lightly by the arm and pulling him half a step forward.

“Jason,” she announced smoothly while winking toward Seth afterward, “meet Thania. She finds you attractive and would like permission to flirt irresponsibly.”

Jason blinked once afterward before looking between both women.

Then he smiled calmly.

“Sure.”

Thania immediately slipped her arm through his, looking entirely victorious already.

Jason allowed it for exactly two seconds before lightly pulling himself backward again.

“Wait,” he murmured toward Max afterward while lowering his voice further.

“Watch your back tonight.”

The humor faded from his expression completely now.

“I have been observing Leader Bo and several others since we arrived.” His eyes shifted subtly across the ballroom.

“Something feels wrong.”

Max’s expression sharpened slightly afterward.

Then she followed Jason’s line of sight across the Conservatory.

Leader Bo stood near the western terraces, still speaking quietly with several influential elders beneath the chandelier light overhead.

Among them stood a man dressed entirely in white.

His smile never reached his eyes.

The pool beside him reflected every light in the Conservatory.

Everything…

Except him.

The Conservatory welcomed the twenty-eight warmly.

The mountain remained uncertain about several other guests.
