Chapter 25: The Pack's Month

The Long Solitude: Ash at the Ford

The days that followed kept the shape of that first morning. Long Ziyun rose beside her two children in the sleeping alcove, and the care she gave them did not change as the world turned beyond the cavern. Summer lay over the forest outside the wind mouth. Lei Yi and Shuang Suxian grew through it under care given according to each child's need, guarded without favor. Each retained a distinct name. Each slept pressed against the other on the same reed bedding, and the spring basin kept its low sound through all of it.

Dragon milk remained their controlled primary nourishment, with softened fish and lake-root paste beside it, and Long kept her feeding and symptom record as she had kept it since the first week. Nothing about that order changed.

Autumn thinned the forest. Winter closed over it, and cold breathed down the high flight shaft while Long kept her children warm through the long nights. The seasons turned without incident.

When winter had nearly spent itself, Long Ziyun left Moonvault Cavern with both children. The broken herb rack lay where it had fallen at the wind mouth. She left it there, unrepaired and untouched.

Their journey took five days across sixty-six li. On the first day of spring, they reached the wolf run.

A grass hollow spread before her, sheltered and open to the sky, with a den ridge rising above one side of it and a training ring lying beyond. A scent trail ran out through the trees. Fallen logs and marker stones stood within the hollow's reach, and hide bundles rested among them. A lake path led away in one direction, and a north game trail in the other.

Lang Suya was waiting in the grass hollow, Long's old friend and the leader of the spirit-wolf pack. The wolf cubs were gathered at the edge of the hollow, and the new spring light lay over all of it.

Long Ziyun inclined her head to her old friend, then set her children down on the new grass and stayed beside them. Lei Yi stared at the open sky, at the ridge, at the gathered cubs along the hollow's edge. Everything here was new. Shuang Suxian pressed close against his side in the strange place, and he leaned back against her the way he always had.

Two hundred forty days had passed. It was the first day of spring, and Lei Yi was exactly one year old. Long Ziyun remained with her two children in the grass hollow of the wolf run, the den ridge above them and the lake path leading away, and nothing more had yet begun.

A year of measured dragon milk had gone into the making of the two children on the grass. On the first day of spring, with Lei Yi exactly one year old, the milk's next adaptation was present in both of them. Lei Yi's bones had been reinforced. Shuang Suxian's bones had been reinforced. It was one shared kind of milestone expressed within two different bodies, under care that had always answered each child's need.

The change was internal and carried no outward display. Long Ziyun sat between her children on the new grass. Shuang Suxian leaned against Lei Yi's side, and the two remained close as they had from their first shared bedding.

Lang Suya crossed the hollow to where they sat. "Your children will keep the pack's first annual month at the lake with us," he said, and that was all he said about it.

Long Ziyun did not rise, and she did not answer in words. She stayed where she was with a hand resting against each small back, and her staying was its own answer. There was no rite to it and no oath, no giving over and no taking of rank. It was a month, and only a month, and her children would keep it as they had kept every day of their lives, beside her and beside each other.

The wolf cubs remained together at the hollow's edge. Lei Yi and Shuang Suxian shared the same grass with them, and that ordinary presence was the whole shape of the joining. Nothing ceremonial followed Lang Suya's plain statement.

The first day of spring lay over the grass hollow and the den ridge above it. Lang Suya remained as leader of the pack's first annual month at the lake. The cubs shared the hollow with the two children who had joined it, and Long Ziyun's care of them went on unchanged. The month was temporary, and it had begun with Lei Yi and Shuang Suxian together and Long beside them.

The afternoon crossed the grass hollow without ceremony.

Lei Yi rested on the new grass with Shuang Suxian beside him. Long Ziyun sat behind both children, one hand resting against each small back. The wolf cubs remained together nearby as a single quiet collective.

It was the first day of spring. The ground beneath the new grass still kept the cold of the thaw, and wind came over the den ridge and through the trees at the hollow's edge. Fallen logs and marker stones stood where the slope began.

Lang Suya remained at the hollow's upper edge. The lake path and north game trail stayed empty, and no one moved from the grass hollow.

Within both children, reinforced bones remained the sole new physical fact. No action in the hollow tested or displayed that change.

The annual month had begun, but the joining granted no rank and transferred no care. Lei Yi and Shuang Suxian remained Long's children, present beside the wolf cubs only for the temporary month.

Long Ziyun stayed beside her two children. Lang Suya and the wolf cub collective remained with the joined group. Lei Yi rested beside Shuang Suxian, and Shuang Suxian rested beside him. The pack's first annual month at the lake had begun, and no lesson had yet been attempted.
