The scent of fresh rain reached him first, followed by gentle notes of jasmine and warm vanilla that lingered within his senses with impossible clarity.

His wolf stirred immediately.

The possessive instinct that had slept within him for decades rose from the depths of his consciousness, pressing insistently against the iron discipline that had governed every aspect of his life.Full novel: The Lycan’s Love — read the rest free on NovelCodex.org

Mine.

It growled.

The single word reverberated through his mind with enough force to tighten every muscle in his body.

Cassian’s fingers curled around the armrest of his chair as he drew another slow breath, refusing to surrender to the instinct clawing relentlessly at his restraint.

“Not yet,” he murmured, his voice low and hoarse.

The wolf resisted, unwilling to accept the distance separating it from the woman it had waited a lifetime to find.

Even so, years of absolute discipline eventually prevailed, forcing the restless instinct back into silence.

For now.

Outside, the storm continued to wash over the city, the rain beating steadily against the glass while Cassian remained alone with the unfamiliar presence now living beneath his skin.

He opened his eyes and reached for the first acquisition file on his desk.

Whatever this bond was doing to him, he would understand it.

And until then, he would wait.

Lena was safe.

That was all that mattered.

LENA

Lena sat quietly on the edge of the bed, wrapped in the hotel’s white robe as the gentle sound of rain tapping against the window filled the room.

After staring at the dark television for several moments, she finally reached for the remote resting on the bedside table.

“They say music helps quiet strong emotions,” she murmured softly, more to herself than anyone else.

The television flickered to life, and she began absentmindedly scrolling through the channels until a music station appeared on the screen.

Almost immediately a cheerful love song filled the room, its melody bright and uplifting, accompanied by smiling couples dancing beneath colorful lights.

She frowned and changed the channel immediately, only to be greeted by another romantic ballad celebrating soulmates and happily-ever-afters.

The next station was no different.

Everywhere she looked, Pairing Day seemed to have transformed the entire country into a celebration of love, with television hosts congratulating newly matched couples while singers performed songs about destiny, forever, and perfect endings.

A bitter laugh escaped her lips as she looked at the screen.

The whole world had chosen today to celebrate the very thing that had destroyed hers.

“Damn it,” she muttered, tossing the remote carelessly onto the bed before leaning back against the headboard gently rubbing her temples.

Her eyes wandered aimlessly around the room until they settled on the small minibar tucked neatly beneath the television.

She stared at it for a long moment before a quiet thought crossed her mind.

“Maybe… a little wine will help.”

She had never considered herself a drinker.

Throughout the three years she had spent with Nathan, neither of them had cared much for alcohol.

Their birthdays had been celebrated with cake and coffee, anniversaries with quiet dinners and soft drinks, and even their happiest moments had never needed wine to make them memorable.

Today though was different, there were no birthdays left to celebrate.

No anniversaries waiting to be remembered.

No future to look forward to.

Slowly she pushed herself to her feet and crossed the room before opening the minibar.

Inside, several bottles rested neatly beside one another, their elegant labels promising vintages and flavors she knew absolutely nothing about.

After hesitating for a few seconds she reached for the one that looked the least intimidating and lifted it from the shelf.

“It can’t taste that bad, right?” she whispered onto herself while she retrieved one of the crystal wine glasses hanging neatly above the cabinet before carefully removing the cork. Follow the newest chapters on novelping(.)com.

The deep crimson liquid poured smoothly into the glass, catching the warm glow of the bedside lamp as it swirled gently against the crystal.

For a moment she simply stood there, watching the wine settle, before carrying it back to the bed.

The glass rested lightly between her fingers as she stared into the dark red liquid, seeing her own reflection shimmer faintly across its surface.

A faint, humorless smile touched her lips.

“Here’s to terrible days… and even worse endings.” She lifted the glass and took a cautious sip.

The flavor spread slowly across her tongue, richer and smoother than she had expected.

It was not nearly as bitter as she had imagined.

Beneath its bold taste lingered a gentle sweetness that warmed her throat as she swallowed, leaving behind a comforting heat that gradually spread through her body.

Her brows lifted in mild surprise.

“So… this is what everyone’s been talking about.”

She lowered the glass and leaned back against the headboard once more, listening as the rain continued to drum softly against the windows.

Since leaving Nathan’s apartment, the relentless ache in her chest eased, if only by the smallest amount.

It was not enough to erase the pain, nor was it enough to silence the memories that still lingered at the edges of her mind, but it was enough to give her a few precious moments during which she could simply exist without feeling as though her heart was breaking all over again.

Lena poured herself another small glass, hoping that somewhere between the rain, the silence, and the unfamiliar warmth of the wine, she might find the strength to endure the longest day of her life.

Lena cradled the glass between both hands, allowing its lingering warmth to seep into her fingers as she watched raindrops race one another down the window.

The city beyond had become a sea of blurred lights, their reflections shimmering across the wet streets like fragments of broken stars.

Somewhere out there, millions of lives had been rewritten in the span of a single afternoon.

Some people had found happiness.

Others had lost everything.

She belonged to the latter.
