CHAPTER 1 — THE DEBT
Elena Rossi knew something was wrong the moment she stepped through the front door.
The house was too quiet.
Usually, her father would be in the living room with the television playing loudly, complaining about the news or pretending to read the newspaper.
Her younger sister, Sophia, would be somewhere upstairs, singing badly while getting ready for work.
Tonight, there was nothing.
No television.
No laughter.
No arguments.
Only silence.
Elena slowly placed her handbag on the small table near the entrance.
“Dad?”
No answer.
Her heart tightened.
She walked toward the living room and stopped.
Her father was sitting on the old leather sofa, his elbows resting on his knees and his face buried in his hands.
He looked defeated.
“Dad?”
Antonio Rossi lifted his head.
For a moment, he simply stared at his daughter.
Then he looked away.
Elena’s stomach dropped.
“What happened?”
“Nothing.”
She frowned.
“Don’t lie to me.”
Antonio stood up and walked toward the window.
His hands trembled slightly.
“Elena, you need to sit down.”
Those words frightened her more than anything else could have.
She sat.
Her father remained standing.
“We’re in debt.”
Elena blinked.
“How much?”
He didn’t answer.
“Dad, how much?”
“Three million dollars.”
The room seemed to stop breathing.
Elena stared at him.
“Three…
million?”
Antonio nodded.
“I borrowed money to keep the company alive.
I thought I could pay it back after the next contract.
Then everything collapsed.”
Elena stood.
“Who did you borrow it from?”
Her father’s silence answered her.
She already knew.
“Dad…”
“Moretti.”
The name sent a chill through her.
Everyone in the city knew the Moretti family.
They were wealthy businessmen to the public.
But behind closed doors, people whispered a different story.
The Morettis controlled businesses, politicians, clubs, shipping companies—and things nobody discussed aloud.
At the center of it all was one man.
Damien Moretti.
The Mafia King.
Elena shook her head.
“No.”
Her father looked at her.
“I haven’t told you everything.”
“What else is there?”
Antonio swallowed.
“The deadline is tomorrow.”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“Tomorrow?”
“Yes.”
“And if you don’t pay?”
Her father looked toward the floor.
“They take everything.”
“Our house?”
“Everything.”
Elena’s voice became softer.
“And what happens to you?”
Antonio didn’t answer.
That was when she understood.
This wasn’t just about money.
Her father was afraid for his life.
She walked over to him and took his hand.
“We’ll find a way.”
“There is no way.”
“There has to be.”
“There isn’t.”
A voice came from the doorway.
“There is.”
Elena turned sharply.
A tall man dressed completely in black stood inside the house.
She had never seen him before.
He looked calm.
Far too calm.
Two other men stood behind him.
Antonio’s face turned pale.
“Luca.”
The man nodded.
“Elena Rossi?”
She stared at him.
“Who are you?”
“My name is Luca Romano.”
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a black envelope.
“I work for Damien Moretti.”
Elena’s heart began pounding.
She didn’t take the envelope.
“What does he want?”
Luca placed it on the table.
“Mr.
Moretti has offered your father a solution.”
Elena looked at Antonio.
Her father couldn’t meet her eyes.
“What solution?”
Luca’s expression remained unreadable.
“Your father’s debt will disappear.”
Elena slowly looked back at him.
“In exchange for what?”
Luca said nothing.
The silence was unbearable.
Then he finally spoke.
“For you.”
Elena felt the blood drain from her face.
“What?”
“Damien Moretti wants you to become his wife.”
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Then Elena laughed.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because she couldn’t believe what she had just heard.
“You’re insane.”
Luca remained calm.
“Perhaps.”
“You walk into my home and tell me that a stranger wants to marry me because my father owes him money?”
“He isn’t asking.”
Elena’s smile disappeared.
Luca looked directly into her eyes.
“He is offering your family a choice.”
“What choice?”
“Accept the marriage.”
He paused.
“Or lose everything.”
Elena turned toward her father.
“Dad?”
Antonio’s eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t ask him to do this.”
“But you knew?”
“I found out this morning.”
“And you were going to let me marry a man I’ve never met?”
“I was going to refuse.”
“Then why are they here?”
Antonio had no answer.
Luca reached into his pocket and placed a second document on the table.
“There is one more thing.”
Elena stared at him.
“What?”
“Your father isn’t the only one who owes Damien Moretti.”
Her blood ran cold.
“What do you mean?”
Luca looked at Antonio.
Then back at Elena.
“Your father signed a personal guarantee.”
Elena’s eyes widened.
“If the debt isn’t paid, the Moretti organization has legal and financial control over everything your father owns.”
He paused.
“And there are people who won’t stop at taking property.”
Elena understood the hidden meaning.
She looked at her father.
He was crying silently.
For the first time in her life, Elena saw her father as a broken man.
She closed her eyes.
She had spent years believing that love and family could protect a person from anything.
Tonight, she realized money could destroy all of it.
She picked up the black envelope.
Inside was a photograph.
A man stood beside a black luxury car.
Tall.
Broad-shouldered.
Dressed in a perfectly fitted black suit.
His expression was cold enough to make Elena uncomfortable even through a photograph.
Damien Moretti.
At the bottom of the photograph was a handwritten message.
ONE WEEK.
Elena’s fingers tightened around the picture.
“One week for what?”
Luca answered quietly.
“To decide whether you will become Mrs.
Moretti.”
Elena looked at him.
“And if I say no?”
Luca’s eyes hardened.
“Then tomorrow begins a war your family cannot afford.”
He turned toward the door.
Elena suddenly called after him.
“Wait.”
Luca stopped.
She looked down at Damien’s photograph.
“What kind of man is he?”
For the first time, something almost like pity appeared in Luca’s eyes.
“The kind of man you should never love.”
Then he walked away.
The door closed.
Elena stood frozen in the middle of the room.
Her father slowly approached her.
“Elena…”
She raised her hand.
“Don’t.”
She looked at the photograph again.
Damien Moretti.
The stranger who had just placed a price on her future.
She should have been terrified.
She was.
But beneath the fear was something else.
Anger.
Elena lifted her chin.
“If he wants a wife,” she whispered, “then I’ll meet him.”
Her father stared at her.
“Elena, you don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“No.”
She looked toward the dark window.
“But I’m going to find out.”
Across the city, inside a luxurious penthouse overlooking the lights of the city, Damien Moretti stood beside a floor-to-ceiling window.
Luca entered the room.
“It’s done.”
Damien didn’t turn around.
“Did she accept?”
“Not yet.”
A faint smile appeared on Damien’s lips.
“She will.”
Luca hesitated.
“And if she doesn’t?”
Damien finally turned.
His eyes were cold.
“She will.”
He picked up a glass of whiskey and looked toward the city below.
“Because tomorrow, Elena Rossi will learn that refusing the Mafia King comes with a price.”
And somewhere between fear, debt, and a marriage neither of them wanted…
their story had already begun.
