The tunnels beneath the prison were dark and twisting.
Aurelius moved through them with practiced ease, Fiona at his side. Julian had left a trail of markers—small symbols that only they could recognize.
"He went this way," Aurelius said, pointing to a narrow passage.
"How do you know?"
"Because it's the only way that leads out of the city. He's trying to escape. He knows he's lost."
They moved faster.
The tunnel opened into a vast chamber—an old cistern, long since abandoned. And in the center of it stood Kaelen Ashford.
He was alone.
"I knew you'd come," Kaelen said. "I knew you wouldn't give up."
"You're right." Aurelius stepped forward. "I never give up. It's one of my best qualities."
Kaelen laughed—a hollow, bitter sound. "You think you've won? You think you've beaten us? We've been doing this for centuries. You can't destroy us with a few lectures and a rescue mission."
"I'm not trying to destroy you," Aurelius said. "I'm trying to understand you. And once I understand you, I can show you a different way."
"A different way?" Kaelen's eyes widened. "You're still trying to convert me? After everything I've done?"

"Because I know what you are."
Kaelen froze. "What do you mean?"
Aurelius stepped closer.
"I know you're not evil, Kaelen. I know you're just broken. Just like I was. You've been carrying a weight your whole life—a weight that's crushed you and twisted you and made you believe that the only way to be safe was to control everything."
He reached out his hand.
"But there's another way. A better way. You don't have to be this."
Kaelen stared at him.
"You don't know me. You don't know what I've been through."
"Then tell me. Help me understand."
Kaelen was silent for a long moment.
Then, slowly, he spoke.
"I was ten years old when the Echo found me. I had nothing—no family, no home, no future. They gave me purpose. They gave me meaning. They made me feel like I mattered."
His voice cracked.
"Everything I did, I did for them. For the cause. For the belief that I was making the world better. I convinced myself that the ends justified the means. That a little manipulation, a little control, was worth it if it meant peace."
"And now?"
Kaelen's face twisted. "Now... I don't know. Everything I believed in is crumbling. The Night Council is gone. The Echo is exposed. And I'm standing here, facing the one person who's actually trying to help me."
Aurelius stepped closer.
"Then let me help you. It's not too late to change."
Kaelen looked at the offered hand.
And then he laughed—a broken, desperate sound.
"It's too late for me. I've done too much. Hurt too many people. I can't be redeemed."
"Everyone can be redeemed," Aurelius said. "That's the one thing I've learned. No matter how broken you are, there's always a chance to become something more."
Kaelen stared at him.
Then, slowly, he reached out and took Aurelius's hand.
"Thank you," he whispered. "Thank you for understanding."
Aurelius smiled.
"Don't thank me. Thank yourself. You made the choice."
